CNY 2019: Lai Po Heen, Mandarin Oriental, KL

Welcome the Lunar New Year with family, friends, and business associates over signature yee sang and auspicious creations symbolising prosperity and good fortune at the award-winning Lai Po Heen, Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur. Embark on a delightful culinary journey with a selection of festive menus meticulously prepared by Chef Ricky Thein and team from 9 January to 28 February 2019.

For the festivities, Lai Po Heen offers three exquisite set menus Fortune; Prosperity; and Wealth that are priced at RM 288, RM 398 and RM 518 nett per person respectively. The 8-course Fortune and Prosperity menus require a minimum of four diners while the Wealth menu is individually-plated and requires a minimum of two diners. We had the pleasure of sampling the Prosperity Menu during the media preview last week.

Toss to prosperity, health and abundance with five tasteful yee sang namely, the Abalone with assorted vegetables; Pan seared scallops and snow pear; Soft shell crab and snow pear; Salmon with assorted vegetable; and Assorted vegetables with shredded fruits in sesame dressing available for lunch and dinner, priced at RM 98 nett onwards (available in half and full portions).

We had the luxurious Yee Sang with abalone and assorted vegetable; made up of lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, this was one of the freshest, tastiest yee sang we've tried this year. To enjoy 20% off the Yee Sang Collection (for delivery or pick-up), you can use this special gift code on their website: MOxGOODYFOODIES (valid until 28 February 2019)

Next, we had the Double boiled fish maw soup with wolfberries and 'Tian Zi' flower - a lovely, warming soup full of goodness. Originating from Yunnan, Tian Zi flower is a rare flower known for its anti-aging properties.

Fish is often served during Chinese New Year as it symbolises abundance for the new year. The Steamed Omega grouper fillet with spicy hot pepper sauce features firm, fresh fish with gelatinous skin, beautifully complemented by a tantalising fresh chilli paste sauce.

Chicken, which is served whole, is a symbol of prosperity and togetherness as a family. Lai Po Heen serves up a Cantonese classic, the Salted brine corn fed chicken served with ginger and onion dip.. always a delight to savour this.

The meal continues with another auspicious ingredient, prawns; in Chinese, its homonym "ha" sounds like laughter. We thoroughly enjoyed the Duo preparation of wok-fried prawns, one stir fried with golden pumpkin sauce and the other butter fried with chicken floss and oats. The dish smelt absolutely fantastic, and tasted just as good, with succulent, juicy prawns (peeled nonetheless for easy consumption).

The highlight for the evening was Lai Po Heen's Chinese New Year "Fatt Choy" and sun dried seafood pot, an impressive dish brimming with sea treasures such as abalone, dried scallops, fish maw, prawns, sea cucumber, dried oyster, sea moss and much more. So delicious!

The Glutinous rice with sun dried scallop and waxed meat in lotus leaf was topped with crispy, deep fried baby shrimp, imparting extra flavour to the dish.

For dessert, we had the Fried glutinous rice cake with yam served with a refreshing Homemade almond bean curd and Nostoc sphaeroides 葛仙米, which is purportedly high in amino acids and is good for anti-aging and improving eyesight.
