Graze Weekend Brunch, Hilton KL

Start your weekend right with the brand new Weekend Brunch, served every Saturday and Sunday at Graze, Hilton Kuala Lumpur. We were excited to be one of first few to sample their new menu items last weekend. The menu is specially crafted by Chef Marc Ferry and his team, and will feature an egg-cellent array of egg dishes, healthy options, mains, as well as sweets.

Freshly baked pastries to tempt you :)

Fresh Juices and Coolers

The Egg in Glass & Prawns (RM18) was my favorite dish of the morning. Two beautiful eggs, cooked in 63°C for 90 minutes, is what I would call perfection in a glass. What a wonderful way to start the morning with!

We also had the Ruffled Egg & Salmon Bagel, with a dill creme fraiche (RM18). Ruffled egg, we were told, are eggs which are barely beaten and then cooked like an omelette. Delicious Scottish smoked salmon and the ruffled egg are topped on soft, lightly toasted bagels. Great value for money, I have to add! Other than that, other egg-tastic dishes you can find on the brunch menu are Turkey ham & cheese croissant, Spanish omelette, and Poached egg on English muffin.

For those who prefer to have a healthier breakfast, there is something for you here too! BabySumoKids love the Greek Yogurt (RM22), served with mixed berries and Tasmanian leatherwood honey granola. There is also Swiss Bircher muesli, Reuben sandwich and more.

One of the highlights of the Graze Weekend Brunch is Chef Marc's signature dish, the seared Bavarian meatloaf slice (RM48). Unlike American meatloaf, the Bavarian meatloaf has a more refined, smooth texture. It was delicious, flavorful and perfectly paired with a fried egg, creamy spinach and roast potatoes.

The saute avocado side dish is YUM too!

We would also highly recommend the Filet Mignon (RM52), served with a fried egg, sauteed mushrooms, and a toasted rye bread. The steak was beautifully cooked to medium doneness - tender and definitely hit the spot :)

If you prefer to start your day on a sweet note, there are also French crepe, American pancakes, French toast and Trio of Fruits for you to choose from. Baby D loved the American pancakes (RM18), which was served with homemade vanilla ice cream.

They do great coffees here too!

Delicious food, served in a great ambiance paired with excellent service - plus prices are pretty reasonable too. What's more, diners can also enjoy FREE parking at the hotel too!

Bavarian Bar Bites & Sweet Treats @ Brotzeit German Bier Bar & Restaurant, MidValley Megamall, KL

When it comes to beer, the Germans do it best. At Brotzeit German Bier Bar & Restaurant, you can find a wide selection of biers from the Paulaner family, all brewed according to the Purity Law of 1516 and using pure spring water from its source.

Last week, we were invited to Brotzeit to try out their new Bavarian Bar Bites that are specially crafted by their native Bavarian Executive Chef Helmut Murmann. Available daily from 3pm to 6pm, these small bites are perfect for those who are feeling peckish and want something light to satisfy an afternoon snack craving, while sipping on their wine or beer.

The restaurant/bar is family-friendly, on the Sunday that we dined here we saw lots of families dining here with their children. With a smoke-free section as well, this is one bar we wouldn't mind bringing our kids to, to enjoy some authentic German fare. Though the food is authentic, the presentation is rather modern and aesthetically pleasing. We like the back wall decor, using recycled bottles - very cool effect. The walls show the bier making craft of German breweries and the journey of the biers from Munich to the tables in Malaysia.

The Bavarian Bar Bites menu will be available from 1 May onwards and features 8 items with prices ranging from RM13 to RM15 (except the Mini Brotzeit platter which is RM29). We started off with the hot dishes - the sausage duet, pork meat balls, breaded Camembert and mini fried platter, all of which were very good.

The sausages were excellent, a combo of spicy chicken and pork cheese sausages and I was surprised to find the spicy chicken sausage so tasty. This was served with a laugenbread roll (made in-house and very good as well) and a trio of sauces (sweet chilli/sweet mustard/Dijon mustard). We also enjoyed the traditional pork meat balls served with a tangy tomato sauce. The breaded Camembert is fried until it is nice and oozy and paired with a delicious cranberry/whipped cream sauce. The mini fried platter consists of a trio of breaded prawn, chicken and fish fillets, my fav being the flaky dory fish fillet.

From the cold selection, we tried the seafood teaser, gypsy pork belly roll and smoked salmon roll. I particularly enjoyed the gypsy pork belly roll, served with gherkins, boiled egg, cherry tomatoes and laugenbread roll. Chef Helmut also let us have a taste of obatzda and bacon spread (which comes with the Mini Brotzeit Platter). Obatzda is a type of Bavarian cheese made from Camembert, chilli and some herbs. And the bacon spread was so yummy - but not so good for the waistline as it is made from pork dripping and bacon.

A German meal is not complete without some German beer. The Thurn and Taxis Fursten Gold Beer, a Marzen style brew is crafted in small batches in St. Emmeram Castle using the finest German malts, hops and yeast. This beer is usually served annually at St. Emmeram Fursten Gold Marzen Fest but you can now enjoy it for the first time in Malaysia. It was nice and pleasant, with a good balance of malt and fruity notes.

We also had a go at 3 shots of Berentzen flavoured schnapps (first in Malaysia too), which are made from natural juices of fresh sun-ripened fruits and Berentzen wheat spirit. Don't be fooled by their sizes, the alcohol content ranges from 16-20%. We tried the Crisp Sweet Apple, Fruits of the Forest and Juicy Aromatic Plum -  very nice, fruity flavours.  They are priced at RM15 per bottle or RM60 for a set of 5 bottles, and for every 3 sets, you get a cute Berentzen shooter glass.

Chef Helmut will also be introducing several new desserts to the menu in the coming weeks. I am sure many of you have heard of chocolate bacon before, but I don't think I've ever seen it sold/served in any restaurants around KL. Well, now you can try this intriguing sweet at Brotzeit - crispy chocolate bacon served with lemon pepper marinated strawberries with apricot sauce and white chocolate mousse. I love the chocolate bacon - first you get the sweetness from the dark chocolate, followed by the saltiness from the bacon. Not to be missed.

Crispy goodness

This is not your ordinary tiramisu, it's a orange cream cheese flavoured tiramisu which is light and refreshing.

Another classic combination of apple and cinnamon - chocolate profiterole with vanilla ice cream and cinnamon sugar apple fritter on vanilla sauce. The apples are soft but still with a bite, paired nicely with the profiteroles.

Service: Good.

Famous Dampfnudel @ Dampfnudel Uli, Regensburg, Germany

When you think about German desserts, you usually would consider classic favourites such as Black Forest Cake, Berliner doughnuts, and Lebkuchen. Dampfnudel is one of them, not too well known outside of Germany, but loved by locals and tourists alike. And in Dampfnudel Uli, Regensburg, we have a shop selling one of the most reknowned Dampfnudels in the country

Dampfnudel is a sweet bread roll deep fried and topped with a sauce. The version at Dampfnudel Uli is a bread soft on the inside and slightly crispy on the outside, complimented by a thick vanilla custard sauce. This may be a dessert but it is also typically served as a main.

Uli's version of Dampfnudel

The exterior of Dampfnudel Uli. I imagine that they swing those wooden doors open every morning and shout out "Good day!". Well, they probably don't but let's just say they do ;-)

Uli Deutzer, the owner, is a proud Bavarian and this shows in the decor inside. You see the Bavarian flag and beer mugs all over inside and pictures of esteemed guests who have tried and loved his Dampfnudel. Amongst them are various stars of days past and there's even a picture of President Ronald Reagan giving his wishes to Uli from the White House. There is even a quote by Alfons Schuhbeck, celebrity chef of 1 Michelin starred Südtiroler Stuben, saying that "the best Dampfnudel is at Dampfnudel Uli". Uli mans the kitchen on his own and the man's longevity is admirable as he is still going strong at age 70.

The interior

A Radler (€2.90) to drink. The version here is much lighter, presumably contains more lemonade.

Fresh bread at the tables

Sweet mustard for the sausages

The signature Bayerische Dampfnudel mit Vanillesoße (€6.10)

The soft bread goes well with the vanilla custard. Pretty similar to bread pudding I would say. Nice!

We also had Der weiß-blaue Teller (€7.50) (The white-blue platter, a homage to their Bavarian roots)

The dish consists of a Kassler Ripperl (smoked and fried pork loin), two Regensburger sausages, bacon, two Reiberdatschi (potato pancake), sauerkraut and some salad.

Have a bite of this! Nice tender pork and we also loved the crispy potato pancake.

Verdict: We enjoyed both dishes, they may look simple but was cooked with finesse. It's no wonder that Uli still manages to draw in the crowds at his ripe old age.

Opening hours: Wed to Fri 10.01 to 18.01 hrs, Sat 10.01 to 15.01 hrs, closed on Sundays to Tuesdays.

Location: Dampfnudel Uli, Am Watmarkt 4, 93047 Regensburg, Germany.

Phone: 0941 - 5 32 97 (No reservations)
