Moromi: New Sake Bar in KL

This weekend, we visited Moromi もろみ, a new, hip sake bar located in Bukit Damansara. Over here, they specialise in premium infused sake, made in-house. Flavours include Passion fruit, Fuji-San, Yuzu kyuri and Pineapple. Refreshing and easy on the palate 😋

Their small plates are great accompaniments to the infused sake; simple yet well-executed. Here are some of the dishes which we tried here:
✨ Grilled shishamo (pregnant fish)
✨ Spicy bluefin tuna tartare with seaweed crisps (my personal fav!)
✨ Saba shioyaki
✨ Ochazuke with fish and tobiko
✨ Unagi don

Coré, Tropicana Avenue: Korean Cuisine

Coré is a modern Korean restaurant located in Tropicana Avenue. The restaurant has a chic, relaxed vibe, thanks to the understated, minimalist interior.

Taking centrestage on the menu is jijimi, which is essentially Korean pancake with different fillings. Jijimi is made by pan-frying a mixture of seafood, meat and vegetables in oil with a thick batter made from flour and eggs.

Here at Coré, you will find jijimi such as haemul pajeon (spring onion and seafood), kimchi jijimi (kimchi, spring onion, seafood), dongtae jijimi (pollock fish), saewoo jijimi (prawn), dubu jijimi (organic tofu), gogi wanja jijimi (pork, chive, carrot, onion), phogo gogi wanja (shitake mushroom, pork) and nockdu jijimi (mung bean, beansprout, pork). We recommend the Jijimi Modum (RM88 for large, RM48 for small), a platter featuring an assortment of jijimi, for a taste of all the different jijimi on offer. According to Coré's Korean owner, Ben, jijimi is eaten during the festive season and the perfect accompaniment to jijimi is a cold glass of makgeolli. Geonbae 건배!

On the menu, you will also find salads and grilled meats as well as Korean rice bowls, noodles and stews.

If you love Korean fried chicken, the chances are you'll probably love the Maewoon pork galbi (RM45) too! The pork ribs is marinated with a Korean spicy marinade, then braised until tender, and finally shallow fried before serving with crispy rice cake (tteokbokki).

We're big fans of Korean BBQ (especially grilled pork!), so Baby D absolutely loved the Gang Daenjang samyup ssam (RM38) here at Coré. To enjoy, simply place the grilled crispy pork belly with bean paste (doenjang), crispy garlic, chilli and rice on the lettuce leaf. So yummy!

We also tried two of the rice bowls, the Bulgogi dupbab (RM28) and Jangjorim butter dupbab (RM28). For the bulgogi dupbab, the rice is topped with beef bulgogi, thinly sliced sauteed marinated sirloin beef as well as julienned carrots and fresh lettuce. The Jangjorim butter dupbab was something new to us  - rice is topped with scrambled egg, French butter and braised beef in soy sauce. The rice bowls come with a serving of hot soup.

Hugo's KL: New Menu ft. Gourmet Burgers and Gin & Tonic

If you're a burger lover, chances are you'll love Hugo's KL new menu launched earlier this month. Located on the ground floor of Ramada Suites by Wyndham KLCC, the restaurant's new menu features a mix of Western classics and Malaysian favourites.

Gourmet burgers, made in-house with freshly ground premium Australian beef, take the spotlight on the new menu. As part of a burger challenge, The Hugo’s KL kitchen team submitted original burger ideas that would satisfy serious burger lovers.

“The burger competition showcased the team’s creativity in the kitchen, and the Ultimate Beef Burger and the SwisShroom Burger are highlights of the new menu. During the challenge both burgers scored extremely well on presentation, ingredients, and most importantly, taste,” said Rajesh Daswani, Hugo’s KL’s General Manager.

We have to agree - both the Ultimate Beef Burger (RM28) and SwisShroom Burger (RM28) were impressive in terms of taste and size. The beef patty was thick and juicy (cooked medium), sandwiched between lettuce, tomato, onion, cheddar and more. The Ultimate Beef Burger also comes with beef bolognese sauce, spicy garlic mayo and crispy onion rings. Meanwhile, the SwisShroom Burger comes with sauteed mushrooms, which added an extra earthy flavour to the burger. All burgers are served with fries.

Also new is the Kid's Menu to cater for the young ones. On the Kid's Menu, you will find chicken or beef sliders, chicken nuggets, penne pasta, fish and chips, margherita pizza and cheese & tomato sandwich. All kids meal are priced at RM20 each and come with fries and fruit juice.

Beef sliders, perfect size for the little ones!

Some of the old favourites remain on the menu, such as the Malaysian specialties, nasi lemak and char koay teow, chicken rendang pizza, grilled Norwegian salmon and more.

Spaghetti aglio olio with prawns (RM30)

Fried calamari (RM20) and Roku Suntory Japanese Gin (RM40)

The drinks list has also been updated with new French, Italian, and Australian wines, and a focus on the classic Gin & Tonic. Perfect for Kuala Lumpur’s tropical climate, Hugo’s KL features six gins including Bombay Sapphire, Roku Japanese Gin, and Botanist Islay Dry Gin. “To complement each, a selection of signature garnishes is presented to guests separately which can be added to their G&T as they see fit,” said Daswani.

For dessert, indulge in the rich American-style cheesecake (RM24) or chocolate fudge cake (RM24).

The restaurant’s set lunch menu and Indian cuisine set menu will remain as special items, while Hugo’s KL’s Happy Hour, Blues & BBQ Sunday, and Sunday Beers promotions continue to run as normal.

Knowhere Bangsar, KL : A La Carte Menu + Cocktails

We recently checked out Knowhere's weekend brunch menu, and the food totally impressed us, so we went back again to this Bangsar restaurant to sample their a la carte menu.

Available daily after 4pm, the a la carte menu features tapas, soups, grazing platters, pasta, sliders and pizzas, all competently executed with a Malaysian twist.

Knowhere Bangsar

To start, we tried a selection of their tapas, small plates which are great for sharing. The Smoked canard and plum (RM24.80) was one of my favorites, slices of house smoked duck paired with a sweet plum and peach salsa, mango sauce and onion marmalade. Fantastic combination of flavours.

Wings are my ultimate favorite finger food, so if I see it on the menu, I have to order it. These Flightless wings (RM20.80) turned out to be extra yummeh - the crisp, deep fried chicken wings are tossed in a spicy, flavorsome ginger chilli dip.

For those who like spicy food, try the Devil's dry roast (RM19.80), a spicy dry chicken curry served with garlic naan as well as the Burnt butter steak (RM26.80), seared sliced flank steak drizzled with chilli burnt butter sauce (there's cili padi in there!).

I've tried many versions of pesto before, but Knowhere's version made with ulam (a Malay herb) is definitely a new one for me. The ulam is blended with kaffir lime to make a fragrant pesto, then tossed with spaghetti and served with cherry tomatoes and Parmesan crisp.

The highlight of our meal here was their thin crust pizza with unique toppings. Diners can request for the half and half pizza (RM36.80) - we had the Nang Nak Knowhere and Italian mutton kari and both were mighty tasty. My personal favourite was the rather unusual Nang Nak Knowhere; I never knew jackfruit would taste so good on a pizza! Great combination of Malaysian ingredients with Italian flavours. The kids, on the other hand, loved the Italian mutton kari - hot and addictively spicy.

Cocktails are also their forte; we highly recommend the Truffle Smoked Fashioned (RM38), featuring Naked Grouse Whisky sous vide and infused with white truffle, Lagavulin 16 years, Salted Caramel and Lemon Bitters.

I wanted something sweet and the Birds of Paradise (left, RM36) was recommended to me. Definitely my kind of drink, great tropical flavours. Made with Bols Genever,  Campari, Peach liquor, vanilla, coconut, passion fruit and citrus.
