Stammtisch KL: German Restaurant and Bar

Gather your family and friends and head over to Stammtisch, the newest German restaurant and bar located in Bukit Damansara, KL.

In German culture, stammtisch, translates to a sacred table in every bar or restaurant that is reserved for regulars, friends and family of the restaurant. At Stammtisch KL, every table is a "Stammtisch table", you can enjoy a hearty German meal, washed down with a glass of German beer and good conversations with your friends and family. Stammtisch is owned by a German-Malaysian family and the kitchen team has been trained by a chef from Munich, ensuring that the food served here is as authentic as possible.

When we think of German food, we think "meat feast". Some of the specialties at Stammtisch include the world-famous German pork knuckle, roasted pork ribs, sauerbraten (3-day marinated beef slices), sausages (imported from Germany) and more. Stammtisch also aims to change KL-ites' perception of German food, with some of the not-so-meaty-but-still-excellent dishes such as the spätzle and mussels cooked in beer. Other than German food, you will also find a few non-German dishes such as langos from Hungary and bramboracky, a staple in Czech. You will also find Ju Yu Zha (crispy Chinese pork lard) topped on pasta or pizza for the ultimate sinful indulgence.

To start, we had the Dunkel Beer Mussels (RM35), fresh, plump black mussels stewed with tomatoes, dark German lager and spices. The sauce was absolutely delish, and we mopped it all up with the sourdough bread.

The Hackbraten (RM50), homemade German meatloaf, came highly recommended. Made with a mixture of ground beef and pork along with tomatoes, onions and spices, the meatloaf is baked and served with mashed potatoes and blaukraut (braised red cabbage). The meatloaf was really moist and flavorful and the sweet and tangy blaukraut complements it perfectly.

We also loved the Crispy pork belly (RM55), featuring two generous strips of beautifully roasted pork belly with faultless, crispy crackling. This comes with a side of spätzle and blaukraut.

Here at Stammtisch, they make their own spätzle. You can choose from either original or spinach, prepared in three different cooking styles. We recommend Bacon and Onion (RM35), one of the traditional ways of enjoying it - with bacons, mushrooms, caramelised onions, and lots of Emmental cheese. So good - one of our favourite dishes here!

What's a German meal without a glass of German beer. Stammtisch offers Erdinger on tap as well as several other German beers in bottle, such as Franziskaner and Paulaner.

For dessert, choose either the Kaiserschmarrn (The Emperor's souffle) or Apfelstrudel, the classic German dessert. We had the latter, which comes with house-made puff pastry, poached apples, vanilla sauce and vanilla ice cream.

For lunch, Stammtisch offers a set lunch menu (weekdays only, 12pm to 3pm) for RM18.90, which includes a main (choose from roasted pork belly, glazed balsamic pork ribs, baked spaetzle etc.) and ice lemon tea.  Click here for the full a la carte menu.

Opening times: Sun - Thu 12pm - 11pm; Fri & Sat 12pm - 1am.

Location: Stammtisch KL, 18-G, Jalan Medan Setia 2, Plaza Damansara, Bukit Damansara, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. (Paid street parking available).

Royal Canton, DC Mall: Dim Sum Platter & More!

Over the weekend, we visited Royal Canton in DC Mall, KL to check out their latest promotions as well as refreshed dim sum selections.

We started off our meal with the 3x3 dim sum platter, which features nine different types of dim sum  items nicely presented in a wooden box. Perfect for those who want to try a variety of dim sum here without having to order a full portion everytime. The dim sum varieties may vary on a daily basis but rest assured that they will always be of similar quality, made with high quality ingredients.  Royal Canton prides themselves with serving their customers only freshly made dim sum (never frozen), with no preservatives or artificial colouring used in their dim sum.

During our visit, we had the Ma lai gao, Siew mai, Steamed char siew bao, Har gao, Baked Portuguese egg tart, Wu kok (taro dumpling with pork), Salad prawn dumpling, Dried scallop, spinach and shrimp dumpling and Lao sa bao (salted egg custard bun). Every component was well-made and served hot, we thoroughly enjoyed it.  Available daily for lunch, now priced at RM23 (normal price RM33).

Other than dim sum, Royal Canton also offers an amazing selection of a la carte Chinese dishes. Our Lala King aka Baby D was delighted when the Steamed lala steam in superior soup (RM18/500g) arrived at our table. The lala clams were fresh and sweet, cooked in a deliciously spicy superior stock with ginger and cili padi. Both the kids had two bowls of this.. yum!

BabySumoKids also shared a basket of siew mai (pork and shrimp dumpling with fish roe) (RM9.50) as well as the Stir fried Australian Black Angus beef with Cambodian kampot pepper served on a hotplate (RM48 for small). Superb dish - the beef was tender and loved the peppery, fragrant Cambodian kampot pepper.

Meanwhile, the adults tackled one of their signature dishes, the German-style Crispy pork knuckle (RM38 for medium, RM76 for large). WOW was the first word that came out of our mouths as we took our first bite - super crispy crackling with juicy, tender meat. Even better than the ones we previously tried in Germany. We were told that it is first marinated, steamed and then deep fried before serving. The pork knuckle is served with a spicy, tangy dipping sauce. Great with a glass of cold German beer (they serve Weihenstephan here). Hubby is a happy man!

Not to be missed here are their flaky, buttery Baked egg tarts too! We also love their Deep fried fresh prawn and beancurd roll (RM9.50), Ginger soup sesame tong yuen (RM8) and Mango sago with pomelo (RM10).

Brotzeit German Bier Bar & Restaurant, Mid Valley

Brotzeit has been delighting KL-ites since 2010, with its delicious offerings of German cuisine and a great range of biers from Paulaner. They currently have two outlets in Malaysia - in Mid Valley Megamall and Sunway Pyramid.

Brotzeit Mid Valley

Fashioned after a Bavarian beer garden, the Midvalley outlet is casual and definitely family-friendly when we visited on a Sunday afternoon. We were here to check out their Breakfast & Brunch menu (available on Sundays and Public Holidays from 11am until 3pm) as well as favourites from their a la carte and dinner menus.

On the Breakfast & Brunch Menu, you will find big breakfast (served with real pork bacon!), roasted pork, pretzel sandwich as well as waffles. All breakfast/brunch menu items are served with a cup of brewed coffee, tea or ice lemon tea.

We sampled both the savoury Waffle & Nurnberger Sausages (RM29) and the sweet Waffle & Apple Stack (RM24). The Belgian waffles were well-made - light and fluffy, and both pairings were fantastic. Chloe loved the sweet version, which comes with crispy apple fritters, maple syrup and cherries while Daniel was all for the Nurnberger sausages, boiled ham and bacon. The sausages served in the restaurant are all imported from Germany to keep it authentic. A super satisfying brunch dish.

Wash your meal down with a cold glass of beer, or like Hubby did, four! He went for the Paulaner Bier Sampler (RM33) which comes with Munchner (lager), Hefe-Weissbier (unfiltered wheat bier), Hefe-Weiss Dunkel (unfiltered dark wheat beer) and Munchner Ur-Dunkel (dark lager) - the perfect way to enjoy the four types of draft beers on offer here. They also offer bier mixes here - I had the Radler (RM15 for 0.3lit), which is the original Munchner lager mixed with lemonade - a lovely thirst quencher indeed!

To go with the beer, the Grazing Platter (RM48) is a great accompaniment, featuring spicy chicken wings, breaded fresh mushrooms, pork meatballs, chicken fingers, bacon skewers and wedges with tartare sauce.

There is also a Dinner Specials menu, which is available daily from 6pm. We had the pork fillets on rosti (RM33), which comes with a delicious black peppercorn cream sauce. The rosti (Swiss shredded potato) is thin and crispy, topped with bacon.

The Schweinekrustenbraten aka Crispy pork belly dish (RM43) from the a la carte menu showcases everything I love about German cuisine. Beautifully tender pork belly with crispy crackling (oh how I love the sound of that crackle!) served on a bed of red cabbage, sauerkraut, mashed potatoes and knuckle gravy. Pure perfection!

If you still have space, order the Bavarian pork ribs which comes in full, half or quarter portions. We wanted a taster, so a quarter portion (RM45 was just nice for us. It comes in three different flavours - traditional beer infused, smokey or honey - we had the latter, and the meat was just falling off the bone. So good!

With every adult mains ordered, kids eat for FREE (valid for kids below 8 years old). We were told that the little boys' favorite is the Benno's, pork patty with tomato and gratinated cheese and comes with fries. Daniel gave this a thumbs up (and he finished it all too!). There is also spaghetti in tomato sauce, pizza, chicken / pork sausages, pork meatballs and spatzle on the kids menu.

For dessert, we rounded up our meal nicely with an apfelstrudel (RM24), spiced apple filling wrapped with a flaky crust and served with vanilla ice cream.

I need to come back here with a larger group next time and try their signature crispy pork knuckle!

Tapas Club Malaysia, Pavilion KL: Authentic Spanish Flavours

When I think of Spanish food, paella, gambas, chorizo, churros and Sangria come to mind. Tapas Club which debuted in Pavilion Kuala Lumpur in July this year brings all my favourites to KL and much more.

Founded by world-acclaimed chefs Jose Angel Alonso and Manuel Berganza, Tapas Club promises to bring the finest Spain classics to Malaysia. Chef Alonso is the Executive Chef at Singapore's Binomio and was hosting chef at the World Gourmet Summit 2016. He has also previously worked with many celebrity chefs, including Michelin award-winning Sergi Arola, Francis Paniego and Spain's most celebrated chef, Santi Santamaria.

On the other hand, Chef Berganza is the first Spanish chef to receive a Michelin star in United States through his restaurant Andananda in New York. He also won acclaim as chef at Sergi Arola's Gastro and La Broche in Madrid.

"We want to bring you to Spain, and to bring Spain to Malaysia. We believe we can achieve this by combining the best ingredients with the best talents," said Tan Kai Young, owner of Tapas Club Malaysia.

Be transported to Spain as soon as you step into Tapas Club. The luxurious, elegant interior, by Spanish designers, Madrid in Love is striking with rich red tones and reflects a classic Spanish restaurant. Andalusian motives are brought to life with a combination of vintage porcelain and steel, along with rustic textures and linear arrangements. The centrepiece is the bar area; look up to see an inverted bullring, where the iconic Spanish bullfighting takes place.

Helming the kitchen here is Head Chef Gabriel Bonnin Roig, who hails from Mallorca in Spain. He works closely with Chef Alonso and Chef Berganza to create the menu that you see in Pavilion KL. To achieve the authentic flavours of Spanish cuisine, most of the key ingredients, including spices and the finest Iberico pork are flown in from Spain. Furthermore, the beer and wine selection are also directly sourced from Spain.

The Sangria here is really good!

Owner, Tan Kai Young

The menu features cold cuts, tapas, tapas+ (main courses), paella and desserts. I like their picture menu as it gives me an idea of what to expect, but if you're still confused as to what to order, you can always ask for recommendations from the staff or choose from their 6, 8 or 10-course degustation menu (RM168, RM288, RM399).

Come in larger groups, like we did and you can sample more of their tapas offerings. The Mushroom Croquettes (RM21) are crisp on the outside, with a creamy filling made with button mushrooms and butter.

The bestselling tapas here is the Gambas Alajillo (RM26); with plump, juicy garlicky prawns served with homemade bread, it's no wonder this is a favorite with diners.

Another signature dish here is the Tortilla de Patatas (RM19), a delicious Spanish omelette made with eggs and potatoes.

We loved the Calamares con Chorizo (RM29), which is made using locally sourced fresh squid, stuffed with Spanish chorizo. The squid is perfectly cooked, hence texture is tender and is balanced nicely by the spicy, savory chorizo.

The Deep fried suckling pig with spinach Catalan-style (RM27) is the ideal snack to go with a glass of light, refreshing Ambar beer. The whole suckling pig is first marinated, then slow cooked overnight and then deep fried before serving, for that lovely crunch.

The Spanish Ambar Beer

When asked what his favorite dishes here are, Tan replies the "Huevo, Patata y Jamon" (RM29) as well as the "Roasted pumpkin with Iberico chorizo"(RM29). The former features diced potatoes, Iberico ham and sous vide egg, for a more refined version.

Tapas Club also introduced three new tapas dishes on 9 October, to commemorate Spain's National Day in October. The Eggplant chips (Berenjena Frita - RM19), drizzled with some honey were crispy and very addictive. The Pincho Moruno (RM25), Iberico pork skewers were marinated in a mix of spices such as paprika, cumin, cinnamon and coriander and grilled - tender, juicy and flavorful. There is also the Pimientos de Piquillo Rellenos (RM27), stuffed Piquillo peppers with minced meat.

My favorite dish here at Tapas Club is the Arroz Negro (RM78), the squid ink paella with clams, fish and squid. The paella here is literally perfection; made with bomba rice, lovingly stirred with seafood stock for 20 minutes and a final blast of heat to create the essential soccarat (ie crust) at the bottom of the pan that a good paella must possess.

There are a total of five different paellas to choose from; vegetarian, chorizo, chicken & seafood and squid ink noodles (fideua negra).

Paella Mixta (RM78) - chicken and seafood paella

For dessert, why not have both the Traditional churros with hot chocolate sauce (RM20) AND the Tapas Club deconstructed cheesecake (RM28) - they're both equally good and will guarantee a sweet end to your meal.
