Shopee Sees 14% Increase in Demand for Sustainable Household Products

Shopee Sees 14% Increase in Demand for Sustainable Household Products
Shop Green with Shopee connects users to shop sustainably and supports eco-friendly sellers

Shopee is spotlighting more local and sustainable sellers to offer the best value for eco-friendly products to meet demand as more Malaysians become increasingly environmentally conscious. According to Shopee’s data trends¹, users are searching for more eco-friendly household products such as solar lights, solar panels, and inverter air conditioners, with keyword searches higher by 14% between 1 January to 25 July 2022 compared to the six months prior.

Users want to trust that what they buy is sustainable and beneficial for long-term use. By introducing Shop Green with Shopee, users can reach out to more eco-friendly sellers, learn more about sustainable living and habits, and inspire others to take action for the environment.

The surge in demand for eco-friendly alternatives reflects Malaysians’ greater awareness and desire for sustainable living. During the first half of 2022 versus the second half of 2021, Shopee sellers saw demand increase for biodegradable items that help the environment like reusable bags and biodegradable plates (19%) and personal hygiene items such as natural deodorant, shampoos, and body soaps (33%).

Malaysian consumers’ desire to lead a sustainable lifestyle has created new market opportunities for local sellers, particularly in the wellness, cosmetics, and personal care industries. Shop Green with Shopee will enable sellers offering eco-friendly products to gain higher visibility and greater brand awareness.

Huiyan Pan, Head of Brand Marketing at Shopee Malaysia said: “Living sustainably means making greener choices today that will positively impact the environment tomorrow. While we see consistent and healthy demand for eco-friendly products in Malaysia, we will continue to work closely with sellers to offer users more affordable and responsible products.”

“Shop Green with Shopee is one way we are connecting users to sellers who have clearly stated their commitment towards environmental sustainability, identified as recycled or reusable materials, and are made locally in the spirit of minimizing carbon footprints.”

Shopee has an array of local eco-friendly sellers and product types spanning categories such as cosmetics and grooming, beauty and fashion, and household, among others. Products from brands include but are not limited to HYGR, The Hive, Minus Zero Waste, PYNGzerowaste, and Green Eco Paradise.

The local and popular eco-friendly seller, HYGR, shared the following perspective for being part of Shopee.

”With all the toxic chemicals found in products, the importance of eco-friendly products has never been crucial. We hope more Malaysians will spread awareness and educate one another on sustainable living. With Shopee as one of our partners, we can expand our customer base and encourage the community to go green.” said Ivor Lim Xian Z and Chew Hoi Meng, Founders of HYGR.

As more users continue to seek sustainable alternatives, Shopee will support eco-friendly sellers and their innovations that allow users to reduce environmental impact. Shopee hopes to connect users with more brand choices with a social impact mission and lean towards a more sustainable direction.

THIRTY8, Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur

THIRTY8 is the signature restaurant at Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur, and is well-known for its legendary weekend afternoon tea. Located on the second highest floor of the luxury hotel, the restaurant, bar and lounge boasts spectacular 360 degrees panoramic views of the KL city skyline, including a dramatic full frontal view of the iconic Petronas Twin Towers.

Other than afternoon tea, the restaurant also offers a fantastic a la carte menu for lunch and dinner, where guests can wine and dine to a selection of steaks, sustainable seafood, sushi, sashimi and Chinese cuisine while enjoying the stunning views. The venue is absolutely perfect for a gathering with your family or friends or for a romantic meal out with your loved one.

THIRTY8, Grand Hyatt KL

There are not many places in KL where you can enjoy this gorgeous, unobstructed view of the Petronas Twin Towers.

To start, we shared the wonderfully crisp Signature fried crab cakes served with tomato relish and remoulade sauce (RM98) and Baby C (the soup lover) had the Roasted wild mushroom soup with thyme croutons (RM48), which must have been very good as she finished the whole bowl herself and I didn't get a lick of it. :P

For mains, we had the Steamed giant tiger prawns with garlic, chilli and glass noodles (RM135) from the Chinese kitchen and it was remarkable. The prawns were huge and fresh, and the simple steaming method brings out the best of the fresh prawns, allowing the natural sweetness to shine.

For the meat lovers, THIRTY8 offers Australian 'Diamantina' Red Wagyu or Black Angus Beef from Stanbroke Farms. We had the rib eye (350g, marbling score 6 - RM350), which was thoughtfully sliced for sharing. Beautifully tender, melt-in-the-mouth and flavorful meat, we certainly enjoyed this and went straight to steak heaven. So so good! I'm also eyeing the Tomahawk for my next visit, very reasonably priced at RM350 for 900g.

End your meal on a sweet note with the dramatic THIRTY8 signature cake (RM60), which comes with theatrics and all. A chocolate mousse arrived in a dome, filled with cascading dry ice vapour. Salted caramel sauce is drizzled over the mousse, before we dug in and indulged in this rich dessert.

Chocha Foodstore, Petaling Street, KL

Going on a food adventure has never been easier, thanks to the MRT! We recently visited a cool Malaysian cafe, Chocha Foodstore, which is located just 300m away from Pasar Seni MRT station.

Housed in the former Mah Lian Hotel, this historic building has been transformed into a casual, hip restaurant cum cafe by the owners, who happen to be architects. Clever touches of green around the restaurant brightens up the space, making it totally Instagram-worthy. If possible, grab a seat at the open courtyard for the best natural lighting complemented by beautiful old floor tiles and potted plants.

A champion of local, sustainable produce, the menu showcases locally sourced ingredients such as fish, seafood, vegetables and poultry. They also run a small garden which supplies homegrown herbs to the restaurant and upstairs bar, Botak Liquor. There are different menus for lunch and dinner, with the dinner menu slightly more extensive and offering some interesting choices.

From the lunch menu, we highly recommend the Cured Fish Rice (RM30). A hearty, well-balanced bowl of goodness, we especially enjoyed the firm lightly pan-seared cured local mackerel, served on rice with a beautiful ajitama egg, scallion ginger sauce and herb butter.

The Curryflower (RM18) has been on the menu since the inception of the restaurant and after trying it, we can see why it's so popular with the diners here. The combination is a winner, with a whole cauliflower rubbed in curry powder and salted egg and baked in the oven. Sinful yet healthy...it's a guilt-free indulgence!

The Duck "Rendang" Hummus (RM32) is a dish brimming with flavour; spicy, tender shredded duck rendang is paired with a creamy chickpea, eggplant and liver mousse hummus.

Using a mix of slipper lobster from Sabah and crab claw meat, the Slipper Lobster Timbale (RM38) is finished off with prawn oil, black ebiko and sabayon on sliced beetroot. The sabayon adds richness and creaminess to the seafood stack.

The Ulam raja creme brulee (RM18) caught my eye when I was browsing the menu. Ulam raja is a Malay herb usually used in salads and savory dishes so I was interested to see how it would work in a dessert. This was a brilliant dessert - the slightly bitter dehydrated ulam raja mixed with Thai basil works well with the sweetness of the honeycomb crumble and smooth creme brulee.

Chocha (which means sit (cho) and tea(cha)) is one of few restaurants in KL specialising in tea and natural wine. We love the fragrant, refreshing cold brew Dong Ding Oolong (from Taiwan) tea (RM18), perfect for sipping on a hot afternoon. There are also a variety of hot tea, such as black, green, raw Pu-er, dark/ripe Pu-er and Oolong.

Cold Brew Sencha (RM18)

Chocha also offers a variety of craft beer. The Jungle Jive stood out as an exceptionally refreshing beer.

We thoroughly enjoyed our meal here at Chocha, will have to come back some evening to check out Botak Liquor. Kudos to the chefs for executing the dishes perfectly and celebrating our local produce in their dishes.

Head upstairs for Botak Liquor Bar (open daily from 5.30pm onwards, except Mondays)

Seafood Promotion @ Gobo Upstairs, Traders Hotel KL

Throughout the month of July 2015, Gobo Upstairs Lounge & Grill at Traders Hotel, Kuala Lumpur will be featuring local sustainable seafood in their "Seafood Treasure from the East" promotion.

"Our aim is to promote and bring local sustainable seafood to our hotel guests," said Sous Chef Kelvin Kilin. He further explains that the seafood is mostly sourced from Sabah.

This seafood promotion features 1 appetizer, 1 soup and 3 main courses (online menu can be viewed here). To start, we were served the cured local seabass (RM30). Loved its light, tangy taste which whetted our appetites for the courses to come. The local seabass is cured for at least 8 hours with salt, sugar and herbs and is served thinly sliced with chilli soya, calamansi dressing, green mango and papaya slaw, peanut shallot and pomelo.

For the soup course, we had the clam broth (RM26) which comes with 2 types of local clams; lokan and sapak, topped with king prawns. The clam jus is tinged with fresh turmeric, ginger and asam keping to give it a slight tangy zing.

Hubby chose the pan seared red snapper (RM60) as his main course. The fish was beautifully cooked and served with a capsicum, pineapple and cucumber salsa and spicy tomato coulis.

"Wow" and "I chose well", went through my mind as my mains of grilled king prawns (RM90) was placed before me. The plating is exquisite, as always. Three butterflied king prawns, perfectly grilled, are served with a cucumber veloute, tomato salsa and lemon butter sauce.

We also shared the seared seabass (RM55), a simple yet delicious fish dish. It definitely had lots of Asian influences such as sauteed bak choy, warm soy sauce, and crispy ginger.

For desserts, we ordered the traditional mascarpone tiramisu (RM20) and New York cheesecake with blueberry compote (RM22) to share. Enjoyed them both thoroughly ;) (Desserts are from Gobo Chit Chat)

Decadent, smooth and creamy
