Xiang Ji Satay House, Melaka

Hubby and the kids love satay, so we decided to check out Xiang Ji Satay House when we were in Melaka recently. We arrived at the restaurant around 5pm; parking was a breeze and the restaurant was not too crowded, so we were served really quickly.

There is a menu on the wall, listing out the different types of Hainanese satay that they serve, including satay chicken, pork, intestine, pork liver (RM0.90 each) and otak-otak (RM1.10). Ordering is simple - just let them how many sticks of each that you want. We went for both chicken and pork, which were cooked to order on the charcoal grill.

You can also watch them threading on the meat onto skewers at the front of the restaurant.

The satays here at Xiang Ji Satay House had a nice lean to fat ratio; they were tender, juicy and flavorful. I especially loved the pork satay, which comes with alternate chunks of meat and thin strips of fat. The fats were nicely crisp, as they get grilled over the hot charcoal embers.

The peanut sauce is awesome too; they include pineapple into their sauce which gives it an appetizing zing. They will serve nasi impit, cucumber and onions to your table based on the number of diners, do note that these are chargeable. Hubby loved the satay here so much, he declared it as one of the best satays he's eaten in Malaysia.

Operating hours: 11am to 8.30pm daily.

Price: Total bill RM41.60 for 4 pax, including drinks.

Location: Xiang Ji Satay House, 50, Jalan Portugis, 75200 Melaka. (Street parking available - opposite SRJK Pay Teck)

Killiney Kopitiam, Purvis Street, Singapore

I had a long lie in our hotel room while Hubby had his breakfast at Cafe Swiss. Then, he accompanied me to Purvis Street for a local breakfast. Our original plan was to have breakfast at YY Kafei Dian, but it was absolutely packed with customers and I am one who does not like queuing for food. So we went to Killiney's Kopitiam just down the road instead. Glad that we came here as we had a really nice, leisurely breakfast here.

Killiney Kopitiam was first established in 1919 and is one of the oldest Hainanese coffee shop in Singapore. They have English menus here, so ordering is easy. You will need to place your order at the counter, pay and they will serve you at your table. They have a pretty vast selection, including French toast, nasi lemak, chee cheong fun, otah, porridge, mee rebus, laksa and prawn noodle soup.

I ordered the mee siam (S$4.10), kaya toast (S$2.20), half boiled egg (2 no. for S$1.60) and a kopi for Hubby (S$1.60). Everything tasted good and the ambiance is of an old-school kopitiam. I enjoyed the mee siam, which was an excellent combination of sour, spicy and savoury flavours.

A local breakfast is complete with some kaya toast and half boiled eggs! Nicely done.

Chin Chin Eating House, Purvis Street, Singapore

After lunch at Saveur, we still had some tummy space, so we walked further along the street to Yet Con. Yet Con is famous for its Hainanese chicken rice as well as pork chops, unfortunately when we went into their restaurant, they told us that they no longer do pork chops and only serve chicken rice or steamboat.

Another restaurant which I had on my list was Chin Chin Eating House, located directly opposite Yet Con. Chin Chin is also famous for its Hainanese chicken rice and pork chop (though reviews say Yet Con serves the better pork chop) as well as chap chye (Hainanese mixed vegetables). Other Hainanese specialties they do here include Hainanese claypot mutton,  prawn roll, cereal prawn and mutton soup. They do have an English menu here, so no problems placing an order even if you can't speak Mandarin. Someone will come to take your order, and once you have eaten, pay at the counter inside the restaurant.

So, we ordered Hainanese chicken rice for 1 person (S$4.00), which comes with rice and soup. The chicken was smooth and tender and had a gelatinous layer underneath the skin. The rice was nice and fragrant, though not as good as Tian Tian's one. Their chilli sauce is pretty awesome, and they also offer a ginger dipping sauce. Overall, a good plate of chicken rice.

Smooth, tender chicken

The Hainanese pork chops was pretty decent (S$6.00) - Hainanese pork chop is essentially a thin pork cutlet, bread and then deep fried, and then doused in a tomato ketchup based sauce. The Hainanese pork chop here is served with three potato wedges and some peas. The pork chop was crispy and the sauce was appetizing, so this is worth trying.

Another highly recommended dish here was the chap chye (Hainanese mixed vegetables - S$10). For the price, I had high expectations and was expecting my mind to be blown away (especially since I have read very good reviews about this dish and has been said to be a must-try dish here). The mixed vegetables included cabbage, wood ear fungus, glass noodles, and beancurd. I would say it is tasty and is very similar to the Jai dish that we often cook during CNY back home. But this is not something I would come back for.

Opening times: 11am to 9pm daily.

Service: Good.

Price: Total bill S$20.50.
