Knowhere Bangsar: Citarasa Gemilang (Merdeka Special Menu)

To celebrate Malaysia's 63rd Independence Day, Knowhere Bangsar has launched the Citarasa Gemilang menu, featuring a total of 14 dishes that best represent Malaysia and its 13 states. Among the mouthwatering dishes you will find on this Merdeka special menu include Mee kolok, Laksa Johor, Tuaran mee, and Keropok lekor, all with Knowhere's unique twist.

Knowhere Bangsar Citarasa Gemilang

We started off with the Cone Inchi Kabin (RM18.80), inspired by the Nyonya-style fried chicken from Melaka. Crispy popiah cones are filled with golden deep fried chicken, which has been marinated with over 10 spices and coconut milk, and then drizzled with spicy butter garlic sauce. This certainly perked up our appetites, with its wonderful aroma and multitude of flavours.

We also loved the Cheesy lekor (RM19.80), the delicious deep fried fish sausage snack from Terengganu, made better with oozy melty cheese topping, served with homemade sweet chilli sauce.

For mains, there are plenty of noodle and rice dishes to choose from. The Bambootiful Char Siew (Selangor - RM25.80) features smoky chicken char siew with bamboo steamed butter rice, anchovy soup and homemade chilli sauce.

The Inkredible Laksa (RM29.80) is Knowhere's take on the famous Laksa Johor; using squid ink pasta instead of regular spaghetti, tossed in a delicious and wickedly spicy laksa broth and topped with large, juicy grilled tiger prawns.

My personal favourite was the Tuaran Grilled Calamari (RM35.80), super flavorful stir fried Tuaran noodles topped with freshly grilled Sabah squid. Hearty, wholesome goodness!

The chefs at Knowhere wanted to create a pizza representative of Malaysian flavours, and came up with the Pizza Tempeh Teratai (RM30.80), a crispy Italian-style thin crust pizza featuring dehydrated hibiscus, tempeh and baked lotus root on a sambal tomato base. The marriage of flavours and textures were just great - you can't stop at one slice, for sure!

For dessert, choose from Coconut Lempeng (Pahang - RM19.80), Sushi Mempelam (Perlis - RM18.80) or Tau-Fruit Fah (Perak- RM15.80). For those with a sweet tooth, don't forget to try their cute mocktail, Bahulu Baby (Kedah - RM15.80) too - think soybean, topped with a bruleed creamy vanilla foam top with a bahulu kuih on a stick for garnish!

There are many other interesting dishes on the menu such as Pearl of the Orient (Penang), Chicken Lomak Podeh (Negeri Sembilan), Heaven Mee Kolok (Sarawak), and Pasta Laksam-Mana (Kelantan) - wish we had more tummy space to try them all! See below for the full Citarasa Gemilang menu.  This menu is available until 16 September 2020.

Knowhere Bangsar Presents "The Blockbunsters"

Knowhere Bangsar has recently launched their latest burger series - The Blockbunsters - six action-packed burger dishes inspired by their favourite action films.

We're loving their punny names, such as Hasta La Beefsta, Peter Bello Parker, and Flight Club. They also do sliders (comes in 3), including Priyanka Claw-pra, Fast & Falafel and Hasta La Beefsta Baby. Can you guess the movies which inspired these burgers?

The burgers were awesome with well-thought out flavours and combinations. Vegetarians are not forgotten, do give the Peter Bello Parker a try - portobello mushroom wrapped in cheese with tomato, roasted vegetables and mint yogurt sauce.

Can't go wrong with the classic beef burger - available in regular and sliders (Hasta La Beefsta and Hasta La Beefsta baby). Loving the soft burger buns too, embossed with the Knowhere logo.

The sliders are great for sharing. My favourite was the Priyanka Claw-pra, with delicious varuval crab patty on a bed of arugula and curry aioli.

Prices for the burgers start from RM25. Available for dine-in or takeaway/ delivery from knowheretoeat.com

Shelley Yu's, Bangsar: Nyonya Cuisine & Cocktails

Authentic Nyonya food, delicious Nyonya-inspired artisanal cocktails and fun decor are just some of the highlights at Shelley Yu's. Although the restaurant is located on the busy stretch of Bangsar, it has a lovely, chilled out vibe, perfect for spending a relaxed weekend at.

Shelley Yu's Bangsar review

Vibrant murals line the walls at Shelley Yu's, with the open bar taking the spotlight. Shelley Yu's offer a gin-centric cocktails menu, infusing gin classics with local Malaysian flavours such as galangal, assam boi, coriander and sambal.

The bartender recommended that we try the KLCC and Pandan Ekspres, two of their signature, most popular cocktails. The KLCC (RM45) is the classic Clover Club cocktail with an Asian spin to it. Gin, raspberries, grenadine, lemon and egg white are shaken together with kaffir lime. Meanwhile, the Pandan Ekspres (RM45), featuring gin, pandan, coconut milk, lime, egg white and nutmeg, showcases the flavours of nasi lemak worked into a cocktail.

The food menu consists of traditional and authentic Nyonya dishes, ranging from appetizers to meat dishes, seafood, noodles and rice, sambal, egg dishes, vegetables and dessert. To start, we had the Jumbo udang pai tee (RM25), a popular Nyonya appetizer comprising of crispy, crunchy top hats, filled with braised turnips, diced prawns and finished with a drizzle of sweet chilli.

Shelley Yu's Bangsar review

To best enjoy a Nyonya meal, order several dishes and share it amongst your family or friends. We had the Ayam pongteh, Rusuk masak kicap, Ikan rawa special, Udang lemak nanas, Bendi bawang putih, Terung sambal and Telur dadar... what a delicious feast it was! We left the restaurant with happy, full tummies.

Ayam pongteh (RM30) - braised chicken and potato stew with caramelised shallots, soy and taucu. One flavorful dish - great for kids!

Rusuk masak kicap (RM60) - one of our favourite dishs here at Shelley Yu's! Beef short ribs are first marinated for 48 hours and then slow cooked in soy and spices for hours until fork tender and falling off the bone.

Ikan Rawa special (RM54) - deep fried sea grouper (ikan kerapu) and doused in a butter and umami sauce.

Udang lemak nanas (RM50) - spicy, creamy prawn and pineapple curry cooked in coconut milk.
A must-have whenever we have Nyonya food.

Bendi bawang putih (RM22) - stir fried okra with garlic

Terung sambal (RM20) - stir fried aubergine with sambal paste.

Telur dadar (RM18) - Nyonya-style omelette

For desserts, we shared a Cendol (RM16) as well as a Sago mangga (RM18) with coconut milk and gula melaka.

The kids sampled their mocktails - the Boi-jito (RM16), a combination of lime and assam boi cordial, mint, lime, and soda as well as the Rumah teh markisa (RM16) - passionfruit, citrus and cold brewed hibiscus tea. Perfect thirst quenchers on a hot afternoon!

Knowhere Bangsar: Seasonal Cocktails and Good Food!

We're back at Knowhere Bangsar, for movie-inspired cocktails and good food! This pork-free restobar has made quite a name for itself and is well-known for their great, unique cocktails and the fantastic variety of fusion food with a Malaysian touch.

Knowhere are currently on their third edition for their seasonal cocktails; this time, the cocktails are inspired by movies in living colour such as City of God, Gone with the Wind and Slumdog Millionaire.

Tea for two? The Water for Elephants (2011) (RM86, serves 3) is actually a gin-based cocktail served in a custom Hendricks teapot with matching teacups with embossed ice cubes, perfect for those who love theatrics. A delicious mixture of Hendricks sous vide osmanthus, Manchino Rosso and roselle.

The Planter's Wife (1952) (RM38) - Plantation pineapple, Plantation Guatemala, Manchino Rosso sous vide pandan, vanilla syrup, cinnamon syrup, Angostura bitters, lemon juice, milk

Mocktails - Calamansi fizz (RM18) and Mango Lassi (RM22)

We've always enjoyed the food here at Knowhere, and this time is no exception. Bold, spicy flavours accompany the plump Chilean black mussels in the Sambal Mussels dish (RM17).

We also had the Grilled calamari (RM26), a whole fresh South China Sea squid, grilled and served with a sambal belacan salsa.

The Wild seabass vongole veloute (RM48.80) took a while to arrive, but it was well worth the wait. A beautifully cooked, moist deep sea sea bass fillet with crispy skin, clam veloute and a rather unique accompaniment of sherry caviar, made in-house.

We love a good burger, and the Un-Quarter Pounder (RM30.80) was one big, delicious and juicy burger. The beef patty is sandwiched between sauteed mushrooms, gherkins, peppers, arugula and finished with a creamy soubise sauce.

The Nang Nak Knowhere pizza left such an impression on me when we had it here last, so I just had to order it again! Still as good as I remembered it, the combination just works so well. We had the half and half again, so for the other half, we had Duck confit with onion marmalade and fresh plums.
