Musical Review: The Beatles' Let It Be

I grew up listening to The Beatles, as my dad would often play them at home. The Beatles are inarguably the most famous band in the world. Their music is timeless and many successful recording artists still give credit to The Beatles as their musical inspiration.

When I lived in the UK, we knew we had to make a visit to the birthplace of The Beatles -- Liverpool. Labelled as the "World Capital City of Pop" by Guinness World Records, we visited The Beatles Story in Albert Dock, where the world’s largest permanent exhibition purely devoted to the lives and times of The Beatles can be found.

At The Beatles Story in Liverpool

From 14th to 17th July 2016, fans of The Beatles got the chance to relive the past and catch "Let it Be" musical at Plenary Hall KLCC, direct from London's West End and Broadway. This international hit show has been seen by over 2 million people worldwide.

Annerin Productions brings to us the show that we never got to see The Beatles perform. We were taken on an epic musical journey starting with their arrival in the USA and the historic appearance on the Ed Sullivan chronicling their music journey thereafter, with popular hits including Hard Day's Night, Day Tripper, Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Twist and Shout, Get Back, I Wanna Hold Your Hand, Strawberry Fields, and many more.

The end of The Beatles era was never thought to be in sight when The Beatles played their last show on the roof of Apple Offices in 1969. We were given the chance to experience what it would have been like if The Beatles continued their journey, the Fab Four coming together again on stage after a decade apart performing other hits like Back in the USSR, Live and Let Die, Got to Get you into My Life, My Sweet Lord, Hey Jude and many more hits the world never got to see performed live.

The original production established itself as one of the West End’s most popular shows when it opened in 2012 and recently celebrated reaching 1000 shows.

We attended the first show on 14 July, and what a fun night it was! Everything from the physical appearance of the performers, their powerful vocals, expert guitar solos and driving drums from Ringo combined with the cinema screen footage combining original footage with live footage from that evening came together to create a very powerful and moving experience, which we thoroughly enjoyed.  Clever set embellishments and subtle wig changes, the use of glasses and news clips from the era kept the show moving seamlessly through the years.  John Lennon was able to introduce some comedy into the show which reinforced The Beatles cheeky chap reputation which endeared them to hundreds of thousands of fans across the globe.

My personal favorites from the show was Yesterday, I Wanna Hold Your Hand, Imagine, Let It Be, and Hey Jude. A definite must-see for Beatles fan!

Thank you Nuffnang Malaysia for the VVIP tickets to the "Let It Be" Musical.

Homeschooling: How to Make Giant Bubbles at Home

Last week, we took our kids to see Dr Bubble with Milkshake show at PJ Live Arts in Jaya One. This interactive storytelling show features all things bubbles - we got to see monster bubbles, bubble in a bubble, smokey bubbles, and much more.

Dr Bubble at PJ Live Arts (full screen here)

It's school holidays this week, but ironically, BabySumoKids requested that we do "homeschooling" on the first day of the school holidays. First lesson of the day was Science, and for Science, Hubby was the teacher-in-charge, and he decided to let them learn and play with bubbles, as inspired by Dr Bubble. You too can have a magical day of bubble fun at home with your kids - I guarantee that they will love it!

You can see easily buy bubble solution in the stores, which usually comes with a bubble wand. However, you can also DIY your own bubble solution - simply mix washing liquid with water in a shallow container / plate. For the bubble wand, we used a variety of apparatus to achieve different bubbles. The best one we made today was using an old badminton racket (with no more strings in the centre) to make giant bubbles. The racket was bent at an angle to enable the kids to easily dip it in the bubble solution, and then create lots of big bubbles. If you do not have an old racket in the house, you can buy a cheap one at Daiso or DIY for slightly over RM5.

Yay we can make giant bubbles too! :)

Our giant bubble!

We also used mesh to create multiple bubbles in one go, as well as straws to create "caterpillar bubbles" (ie several small bubbles attached to one another to look like a caterpillar).

We sure had fun experimenting with bubbles today :)

We were excited to attend its maiden show tonight, and what a spectacular one it was! The songs, the dance moves, the choreography, the cast... they were all A-MA-ZING ;) The dancers were really energetic and there was lots of humor injected in the first act of the musical.

"You should be dancing YEAH!"

Premiered in the West End at the London Palladium in 1998 and Broadway at the Minskoff Theatre in 1999, the spectacular musical Saturday Night Fever has been seen by over 10 million people with over 2,800 shows in more than 20 countries across the globe including Italy, Argentina, Japan, Australia, Germany, Greece, Netherlands, Sweden, Spain, South Africa, Czech Republic and Finland.

The musical will be headlined by hugely talented casts and musicians who will be performing a repertoire of Bee Gees’ cult classics such as “Stayin’ Alive”, “Night Fever”, “More Than A Woman”, “Tragedy”, “Disco Inferno”, “How Deep is Your Love”, and “You Should Be Dancing”.

Saturday Night Fever tells the story of Italian-American Tony Manero and his gang in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn who are stuck in dead-end jobs but rule the dance floor at the discotheque 2001 Odyssey. Tony is a tough cookie; an outstanding dancer and his ultimate dream was to escape the mean streets of Brooklyn.

Every Saturday night, Tony dons his flares and struts his stuff; capturing all eyes through his stylish moves on the dance floor. He has only one ambition in life - to become the disco king. When he meets Stephanie, who also dreams of a world beyond Brooklyn, they decide to train together for a dance competition and their lives begin to change forever.

Wagamama, London

After our meal in Maze, we wandered the streets of London to kill some time before our Mamma Mia show. I have been wanting to watch Mamma Mia like forever, so I was really looking forward to it!

Christmas was all around us; Christmas themed lights lit up the streets.
Shop fronts decorated with all things Christmas. It is always interesting to look into the shop fronts and see what the designers have cooked up. Selfridges had a variety of fairytale characters, Snow White & The 7 Dwarfs, Cinderella and Captain Hook.

It was freezing by 6pm so we welcomed the idea of escaping into a warm restaurant. We wanted something quick, light and reasonably priced, so Wagamama it was.

Wagamama is a restaurant chain serving Asian food with a Japanese Ramen bar concept. The feeling I get in here is like being in a high school canteen, sitting on long benches with friends having a laksa or mee goreng.

Wagamama is the brainchild of Alan Yau, who is also responsible for creating Michelin restaurant, Hakkasan and Yauatcha. Opened in April 1992, Wagamama's philosophy is ‘to combine fresh and nutritious food in an elegant yet simple setting with helpful, friendly service and value for money’.

I used to frequent Wagamama back in the days when I was still living in UK, especially when I was missing Asian food (well, it's not really that Asian but its the closest thing I could get where I was living). Being back here brings back good memories.

The waiters take your order on a PDA, which is transmitted to the kitchen. It is always very busy in here but service is prompt. Fresh juices here are pretty good, the raw juice, a combination of carrot, cucumber, tomato, orange and apple, is refreshing. Complimentary green tea is available with every order of main course.

To start, we shared the gyoza (£4.80), steamed/grilled chicken and vegetable dumplings, served with a vinegar/soy dipping sauce.
I had the Wagamama Ramen (£7.80), egg noodles in a vegetable soup topped with grilled chicken, smooth dory, prawn, kamaboko, fried tofu, mushrooms, wakame and spring onions. Perfect for a cold winter day!
Hubby had the Yaki Soba (£6.95), teppanfried soba noodles with chicken, shrimps, egg, beansprouts, peppers, white and spring onions, garnished with fried shallots, pickled ginger and sesame seeds. The noodles were too dry and lacking slightly in flavour, so we had to add more soy sauce.

And, btw, Mamma Mia was a fantastic show!

Verdict: Filled our stomachs but this outlet didn't really deliver on flavour.
