CNY 2019: Kim Ma, Palace of the Golden Horses

The most celebrated festival amongst the Chinese community is almost upon us, bringing families together as they gather to celebrate and usher in the new year with prosperity and good luck.

In line with the upcoming Chinese New Year, Kim Ma Restaurant at Palace of the Golden Horses will be presenting three "Prosperity Set Menus" created by Executive Chinese Chef Chris Lim and his team, priced from RM1,388 nett onwards throughout the month of January and February 2019.

We had the pleasure of sampling their Chinese New Year Set Menu 1, an 9-course meal priced at RM1,388 nett per table of 10 persons. We kick-started our meal with a prosperity toss, aka lo hei, with the Prosperity Norwegian Salmon and Top Shell Yee Sang. To commemorate the Year of the Pig, each yee sang is topped with an (edible pastry) pearl 珍珠 which shares the same homonym as pig 猪.

Next, we had Kim Ma's signature Double boiled minced chicken broth with superior fish maw and shimeji mushrooms. To achieve the unique texture of this soup, chicken breast is first trimmed, frozen and minced until very fine, then added to a superior stock (siong tong) when cold and double boiled for about half an hour, resulting in a clear soup with a custard-like chicken mousse. Absolutely delicious!

A whole chicken is usually served during CNY as it symbolises prosperity and togetherness as a family. The Poached free-range chicken with cordyceps flower and black mushrooms smelt wonderfully enticing, and we especially loved the sweet, delicious chicken essence broth.

The best way to enjoy a whole, fresh fish - steamed whole, with superior soy sauce.

The Chinese believe that prawns symbolises laughter and happiness, so laugh your way to a prosperous new year. The prawns were stir fried in Chef's signature sauce and then dusted with edible gold dust, for an extra luxe appearance.

My first time trying hedgehog mushroom- they're meaty and tender, and especially good eaten with the braising sauce. The deep fried beancurd flower gives a crunchy contrast to the dish.

Steamed glutinous rice with wax duck and yam in lotus leaf - great flavours!

For dessert, we had the Double boiled osmanthus flower and peach jelly with snow pear followed by Chef's signature black garlic ice cream with raisins. A pretty unusual flavour - you either love it or hate it - it was pretty pungent, sweet, savory and slightly acidic at the same time. I wasn't sure about it when I took my first spoonful, but the flavours certainly grew on me.

The restaurant has a seating capacity of 120 with five private rooms.

The Great British Circus Malaysia: Mines 2

A circus? In Malaysia? Count us in!

The Great British Circus Malaysia is owned and operated by the Kirilov Family and is currently in its fourth year touring and performing throughout Malaysia. The Kirilovs were respected artists, performing professionally for many years around Europe before becoming Circus Owners and public entertainment producers.

This combination of talent helps them create exciting and highly professional shows, based on circus traditions and skills, injected with humour, dance and a modern theatrical presentation. The Kirilovs policy of using only top performers in their shows means their casts are truly international, providing audiences with great entertainment and variety.

The Great British Circus Malaysia is currently performing at Mines 2 in Seri Kembangan, from now until 1 July 2018. Taking place in an air-conditioned big top tent, this two-hour show is guaranteed to put a smile on your face, regardless if you're an adult or child.

The "chicken" and clown had us in stitches with their antics. We were definitely wowed by the flying trapeze ensemble as well as the jaw-dropping Wheel of Death (I can't believe the guy could even use a skipping rope on there!) and the Globe of Death (that steel ball where they fit in four motorbikes and they zoom around in high speed!).

Fantastic entertainment for the whole family! We loved it, would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a great evening out!

Some highlights of the 2018 Show at Mines 2 - funny, entertaining and exhilarating!

YOU Fishball Noodles, Seri Kembangan

Last weekend, our trip to Seri Kembangan took us to You Fishball Noodles for brunch. Once you arrive, you will be greeted by the cooking station situated at the front of the restaurant, however just step inside the air-conditioned restaurant and your order will be taken by one of the staff.

Choose between four types of noodles available - koay teow,  yellow mee, beehoon or lou shi fun and indicate whether you would like it in soup or dry (RM7 for small, RM8 for big). They also do curry mee if you prefer that.

Hubby and I went for the dry loh shi fun while the kids had koay teow. The noodles are topped with beansprouts and pork lard, both of which gives extra texture to the noodle dish. We had the small portion and the noodles came with a generous bowl of "liew".. we counted four fishballs, fishcake, deep fried beancurd with fish paste and one fish dumpling (yu wat) along with some lettuce. We also ordered a side of deep fried fish cake (RM6 each) and deep fried bean curd with fish paste (RM1.30 each). Their bouncy fishballs are all made in-house using wolf herring fish. What I loved most here was the deep fried bean curd, which is fried to order... love the crispiness of these with a thin layer of fish paste within. I lost count of how many pieces I ate :P

For drinks, don't forget to try the gingko barley (RM3.20)... lovely and thick, and so generous with the gingko. Thanks to our relatives for bringing us here! :)

Opening times: 7.30am to 4.00pm. Closed on Tuesdays.

Location: You Fishball Noodles, 15 Jalan Aman SK 13/15A,  43300 Seri Kembangan, Selangor, Malaysia. (limited street parking available)

Tel: 012-332 1977

CNY 2018: Kim Ma, Palace of the Golden Horses

The most celebrated festival amongst the Chinese community is almost upon us, bringing families together as they gather to celebrate and usher in the new year with prosperity and good luck.

In line with the upcoming Chinese New Year, Kim Ma Restaurant at Palace of the Golden Horses will be presenting three "Fortune Set Menus" created by Executive Chinese Chef Chris Lim and his team, priced from RM1088 nett onwards throughout the month of January and February 2018.

We had the pleasure of sampling their Chinese New Year Set Menu 1, an 8-course meal priced at RM1,088 nett per table of 10 persons. Diners have the choice to start their meal with either the Norwegian Salmon and Top Shell Prosperity Yee Sang or Kim Ma Signature Double Hot and Cold Appetizer Combinations.

This will be followed by a comforting bowl of Kim Ma's signature Double boiled minced chicken broth with superior fish maw and shimeiji mushrooms. It was interesting to learn from Chef Chris how the soup was made; first chicken breast is trimmed, frozen and minced until very fine, and then added to a superior stock (siong tong) when cold and double boiled for about half an hour, which gives its unique texture (clear soup with a custard-like chicken mousse).

Hubby's favorite dish of the day is the Cantonese-style smoked salted free range chicken. The meat was tender and full of flavour, and has an intense smokiness which we love. The chicken is smoked with Chinese tea leaf (Chef Chris uses tie guan yin) along with rice and flour in a wok.

The Traditional steamed river cat fish with superior soy sauce was nicely done, simple and good.. Great way to enjoy the fish's natural flavours.

My personal favorite was the Stir fried large tiger prawns with Chef's special Mongolian sauce. The sauce was really good; unfortunately I didn't get the secret sauce recipe from the chef except that it contains black pepper and condensed milk.. but trust me, you have to try this! You'd be licking your fingers when you're done with this course.

The Assorted Mushroom Dumplings were made into the shapes of money bags, so they're auspicious (exactly what the Chinese like to see during CNY). Filled with turnip, carrot and mushrooms, they're served with broccoli and a smooth pumpkin sauce.

We enjoyed the Steamed mini glutinous rice parcels, wrapped in lotus leaves with roasted duck and dried shrimp. They're just the right size and the texture of the rice was soft and sticky. Yum.

One of the things I look forward to eating to most during CNY is the nian gao (New Year cake). The nian gao is made in-house, steamed and then coated in fresh coconut. It is served with ma lai gao (Malay cake) with salted egg yolk layers and a Double boiled pineapple and water chestnut with peach jelly dessert, for a sweet end to the meal.

Sweet Fancy Duet

The Chinese New Year Set Menus are available for both lunch and dinner in January and February 2018. For more information and reservation, please contact Palace of the Golden Horses at 03-8946 4888 ext 3484.
