While looking for places to eat in Desaru, I came across this restaurant which many has praised as having the best nasi kerabu in the area. Restoran Cikgu Kay is a restaurant in Bandar Penawar, which serves East Coast specialties such as nasi kerabu, nasi kukus and nasi dagang.
The restaurant is run by an elderly couple. Most of their dishes are showcased at the front. We both chose the Nasi kerabu, which the owner assembled for us (ie the blue rice, usually tinted by blue pea flower aka bunga telang, various herbs, kickass sambal chilli) and then you help yourself to the salted egg, keropok (cracker) and meat of your choice. Usually, I go for the fried chicken when I have nasi kerabu but as we arrived quite late, the remaining fried chicken looked a little sad so I opted for the ayam masak merah instead. Turned out to be a good choice as it was really yummy.
Hubby had the same but with daging rendang (beef rendang) which was flavorful, well-spiced and tender. We both enjoyed the nasi kerabu here. The kids had white rice with some beef rendang and fish crackers.
Opening hours: 7am to 7pm daily.
Price: Total bill RM25 for 3 meals.
Location: Restoran Cikgu Kay,No. 2 Jalan Dato Jaafar 24/2, Taman Mutiara Desaru, Bandar Penawar, Tanjong Surat, 81930 Johor, Malaysia. (Street parking available)
When we were in Desaru, I was keen to try some of the local specialties such as Laksa Johor and Mee Rebus Johor. Mr. Google came to the rescue, and we dropped by at Mama Jeli Recipe in Kota Tinggi, Desaru for lunch before heading back to KL.
Housed in a shack, the restaurant is situated by the roadside and diners can have their meals al fresco-style. The menu (in Malay) can be found at the front of the restaurant, with offerings such as Laksa Johor, rojak, mee rebus, soto, cendol, ice jagung selasih and more.
We ordered a variety of dishes to share, and they were all delicious. Cendol pulut (RM2.50) is a must, great for cooling down in this hot weather! Sweet and salty.. yums!
The Laksa Johor (RM5.50) was excellent - spicy with a nice, thick fish broth. Laksa Johor usually comes with spaghetti noodles, but here, they use the short (white) laksa noodles instead.
Hubby and the boy loved the Mee rebus (RM5.50) - yellow noodles topped with a thick sweet potato broth. They ended up ordering another plate of this to share.
I ordered the Soto meehoon (RM5.50) for the kids, but they ended up preferring the spicier noodle dishes so I had this. LOL.
Mama Jeli Recipe is located approximately 11km (15-mins drive) from Westin Desaru.

One of our favourite parts of the resort was the white, sandy Desaru Beach fronting the hotel. We spent hours here; the kids enjoyed frolicking in the warm sea and sand, while the waves crashed against their sun-kissed bodies.
