Poh Piah Lwee 香薄饼食家, Melaka: Nyonya Delights

One of our favourite finds during our last Melaka trip was Poh Piah Lwee. Located on Jalan Kubu (near Jonker Walk), this hidden gem is run by a friendly couple, offering local Nyonya delights.

The menu consists of only five items - Poh piah, Nyonya dumpling, Rojak, Nyonya laksa and Minced meat and mushroom noodle. We ordered everything apart from the rojak.

We initially ordered one poh piah (RM3), though the owner aunty insisted we should have two as one would definitely not be enough for us. True enough, she was right - after tasting the first one, we immediately placed an order for another one as it was so GOOD!  The popiahs here are made fresh to order. You can watch them make the poh piah at the front of the shop - she skillfully layers fresh beansprouts, fresh lettuce, jicama, sweet sauce, egg and pork lard onto homemade popiah skin. By far the best poh piah we have tried in Melaka! Click here to watch the video.

Or watch the video on my YouTube channel. :)

Another highlight for us is the Nyonya dumpling (RM5.50), also known as Nyonya chang. The glutinous sticky rice is tinted in parts with blue pea flower, with a sweet, salty minced pork filling. The taste is well-balanced and the texture was just right. You can also buy them to take away.

They also do a pretty nice version of Nyonya laksa (RM5). Nice and creamy broth, though a tad more spicy than usual. It comes with meehoon and mee, with fish cake, tofu puff, prawns, cockles and cucumber. For the kids, we ordered a bowl of Minced meat and mushroom noodle (RM4).

Restoran Res Porridge House, Melaka

Our family loves Chinese porridge (also known as congee), so when we chanced upon Restoran Res Porridge House in Melaka, we decided to give it a try.

We ordered two porridge, which are served in claypots... we had the minced pork (RM5) and Toman fish porridge (RM9). The portion is generous and the porridge is topped with shallot oil. Pretty good, the porridge was thick and silky smooth - we enjoyed it.

The waiting staff recommended that we tried their signature dish too, the Steamed herbal kampung chicken (RM25 for half). The sauce itself had a strong herbal taste (dong kwai, goji berries) which I liked, but the chicken was a little too bony for my liking so there wasn't actually much eating there but I guess that's just the way kampung chickens are.

Beansprouts with salted fish (RM10)

Operating hours: 5.30pm - 1am. Closed on Sundays.

Price: Total bill RM52.50 for 4 pax.

Location: Restoran Res Porridge House, 129 Jalan Melaka Raya, Taman Melaka Raya, 75000 Melaka.

Unicorn Cafe, Melaka - Authentic Nyonya Food

My girl loves all things unicorn, so when I came across a restaurant in Melaka called "Unicorn Cafe", my interest was piqued. Turns out this restaurant, which is located in Taman Melaka Raya serves Nyonya food so we headed there for lunch after checking out from our hotel.

It must have been our lucky day as we scored a parking space right in front of the restaurant, which is on a rather busy street. There was only one other table when we arrived, so service was fast but the place filled up rather quickly after 12.30pm. Talk about good timing!

The menu at Unicorn Cafe consists of Peranakan favourites such as satay Nyonya, babi asam, chili garam ikan, babi pongteh, otak-otak and more. We ordered a few dishes to share and it turned out to be a great meal!

Our favorite Nyonya appetizer - pai tee (RM5 for 5 pieces) served in a cute metal tray. Prepared to order, so the shells were wonderfully crisp and warm, filled with a moist and flavorful filling of thinly sliced vegetables and omelette, with a spicy chilli served on the side. Really tasty!

Nyonya popiah (RM4) was excellent too, a thin crepe filled with jicama, diced beancurd and assorted vegetables.

Other must-try dishes here are the Nyonya laksa (RM6.50) and Mee siam (RM6.50). The mee siam in particular was really popular with the other diners.

The Nyonya Laksa was very good!

For the kids, we ordered the Ayam pongteh (RM9.50) as it is a non-spicy dish. This comes with rice and vege of the day. This chicken stew was flavorful, with lots of gravy made using taucheo, potatoes and Chinese mushroom.

For dessert, we highly recommend the Cendol Melaka (RM4.50), which I feel is the best cendol we've ever tried in Melaka. What makes this really special (and delicious) is the thick coconut cream poured over the finely shaved ice, which gives it a really creamy and rich flavour. It also comes with thick gula melaka sauce, more coconut milk, cendol strands and red beans. So so good!

We also had the Unicorn affogato (RM4.50), made using aromatic local coffee and a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Operating hours: 9.30am to 4.30pm daily. Closed on Thursdays.

Service: Good.

Price: Total bill RM40.50

Location: Unicorn Cafe, 43 Jalan Melaka Raya 11, Taman Melaka Raya, Melaka (Street parking available).

Xiang Ji Satay House, Melaka

Hubby and the kids love satay, so we decided to check out Xiang Ji Satay House when we were in Melaka recently. We arrived at the restaurant around 5pm; parking was a breeze and the restaurant was not too crowded, so we were served really quickly.

There is a menu on the wall, listing out the different types of Hainanese satay that they serve, including satay chicken, pork, intestine, pork liver (RM0.90 each) and otak-otak (RM1.10). Ordering is simple - just let them how many sticks of each that you want. We went for both chicken and pork, which were cooked to order on the charcoal grill.

You can also watch them threading on the meat onto skewers at the front of the restaurant.

The satays here at Xiang Ji Satay House had a nice lean to fat ratio; they were tender, juicy and flavorful. I especially loved the pork satay, which comes with alternate chunks of meat and thin strips of fat. The fats were nicely crisp, as they get grilled over the hot charcoal embers.

The peanut sauce is awesome too; they include pineapple into their sauce which gives it an appetizing zing. They will serve nasi impit, cucumber and onions to your table based on the number of diners, do note that these are chargeable. Hubby loved the satay here so much, he declared it as one of the best satays he's eaten in Malaysia.

Operating hours: 11am to 8.30pm daily.

Price: Total bill RM41.60 for 4 pax, including drinks.

Location: Xiang Ji Satay House, 50, Jalan Portugis, 75200 Melaka. (Street parking available - opposite SRJK Pay Teck)

Famous Putu Piring Melaka (Jalan Tengkera)

This trip to Melaka, we introduced putu piring to BabySumoKids. Putu piring is made from rice flour with a gula melaka filling, steamed and then coated in freshly grated coconut. One of the most famous places selling this delicacy in Melaka is called Putu Piring Melaka, located on Jalan Tengkera.

We arrived just after 6pm, so there was no queue at all. There is no signboard outside the shop but they have a small banner inside with the stall's name, opening times and price clearly stated. It's located next to a Sports Toto shop.  A friendly couple operate this stall; the wife steaming the putu piring while the husband does the packing.

We got five pieces of the putu piring, and after we took our first bite, we wished that we had gotten more! During this trip, we tried a couple of places which sold putu piring and the ones here from Putu Piring Melaka certainly trumps the rest.

Eaten hot, it was soft, feathery light in texture with a delicious combination of sweet-salty flavours (sweetness from the gula melaka and saltiness from the freshly grated coconut). So so good!

Operating hours: 6pm to 10pm daily. Closed on Sundays.

Price: RM1.20 each.

Location: Putu Piring Melaka, 252, Jalan Tengkera, 75200 Malacca City (limited street parking available).

Tel: 06-282 1505

Instagram This #3: Jonker Street, Melaka

For the third installation of Instagram This, we head over to Melaka and share with you some of the most Instaworthy spots on Melaka's most famous street, Jonker Street.

Jonker Street is a popular tourist attraction, so it is very busy everyday, especially on weekends when they have the night markets. It is home to many restaurants, boutique hotels, museums as well as cool cafes. Most of these places open after 9am, so if like me, you prefer less or no people in your photos, then come before 9am and you literally get the whole place to yourself.

Hokkien Huay Kuan

Since they weren't open yet, we could take a shot with the ornate doors.

 Colorful letterboxes are always Instaworthy!

 Beautiful Peranakan buildings

Took this shot on our last visit to Melaka; this is possibly one of my favourite spots. So quaint and old school!

Off Jonker Street is this Jalan Tukang Besi, which has shops, boutique hotels, murals and temples.
