Seafood @ Restaurant Soon Huat, Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan

Hello 2016! Starting 2016 with a guest post from The Unc - one of the best meals he had during his trip home last year.

**************

We have visited Port Dickson many times but have never quite found that restaurant that has truly wowed us and made us want to return for more. This time around, we went to Restoran Soon Huat at Kampung Kuala Lukut for some seafood based on a relative's recommendation and we were absolutely impressed by the quality and freshness of the seafood on offer there.

The restaurant can be quite tricky to find if you do not have a GPS at hand. It is in a fishing village so you'll be greeted by the sight of old fishing boats docked outside the restaurant.

We thoroughly enjoyed the seafood on offer here. Everything was fresh and tasted delicious. We started off with a steamed red snapper (RM55), which is their signature catch of the day. It was recommended by the lady that took our orders and we were very happy with the fish. The meat was sweet and had a great texture that you only get from the freshest of fish.

We also ordered deep fried squid with salted egg yolk (RM18), Lala clams in superior stock (RM25), kangkung belacan (RM9), and finished off with Kam Heong Crabs (RM80/kg - we paid RM104 for 2 crabs). The squid and Lala clams were addictive. Baby D couldn't stop eating them. He almost had 1/3 of the whole plate and we assure you it wasn't a small plate of clams!

The Kam Heong Crabs was the highlight of the day. Baby C made the remark, "These crabs taste like scallops!" and we could see how she could make the connection, as the crab meat was taut, sweet and fell off in strands as you bit into it. The market price of crabs have recently skyrocketed and we found out recently that crabs that you get from the market cost about as much as the ones you get prepared and cooked for you in a restaurant. We went for the "larger" crab variant which costs RM10/kg more than the normal sized crabs but the price difference we paid was worth every penny.

Obviously a trip to Port Dickson is not complete without a visit to the beach! The kids thoroughly enjoyed their time having fun in the sun and frolicking in the sand.

T C Keong Restaurant, Seremban

Last week, we made a trip back to Seremban to run some errands and also met up with our close relatives. We invited them to join us for lunch at our favorite 大炒 (dai chow) - TC Keong Restaurant. A meal here is ALWAYS satisfying.

When dining here, do sit at the bottom half of the restaurant (away from the kitchen) as it is less warm in the afternoons.

Before we can even order, the lady who takes the order lists down everything that we want to eat - deep fried tilapia fish, stir fried beef, sweet and sour pork, stir fried beansprouts and kangkung belacan. She knows us too well! :)

Even with GST, the price of a meal here is still very affordable - portions are generous and can comfortably feed 6 people.

My aunt asks why we always order deep fried fish when we dine out - the reason is simple, because I don't do deep frying at home! :) The fish looked small but it turned out to be really meaty - so good! (RM28).

The sweet and sour pork (RM12) is another dish we never make at home so eat all we can here!

I'm going to have recreate this at home soon, another favorite of ours - stir fried beef with oyster sauce and ginger (RM12). So tender, so delicious!

Beansprouts with salted fish (RM7) - the only time I don't mind eating salted fish :P

My favorite - Japanese tofu with minced pork (RM8) - I ate almost the whole plate!

Kangkung belacan (RM7) - my mum's favorite!

Earlier that morning, a beautiful sunrise in KL before we headed to Seremban. We stopped at Asia Laksa for breakfast - slightly spicier than usual, but I actually liked it better like this! So yummy.

Siew Pow Master, Seremban, Negeri Sembilan

Wishing all Indian friends and readers a very Happy Deepavali. Have a wonderful celebration with your loved ones.

**********************

After breakfast at Yi Poh, we walked across the street to Kedai Siew Pau Asia, also known as "Siew Pow Master" to get some fresh bakes. You can find siew pow, egg tart, pineapple tart, cheese tart, almond tart, kaya puff and many types of buns here. All items are freshly baked everyday on the premises. I love coming here and being greeted by the smell of the freshly baked items.

Seems that we arrived at the right time, since most of the bakes were just out of the oven. Though siew pow is one of their specialities here, we much prefer the ones that we get from Empayar Siew Pow, hence we gave that a miss here. What we do like are the egg tarts here, silky smooth custard with a crumbly pastry. ;) Especially when eaten warm.

So many pastries to pick from!

Hot dog bun (fried) (RM1.50)

The kids wanted a doughnut (RM1). This is one of the basic ways you can eat a donut, with a sprinkling of white sugar.... we ate it as soon as we bought it and it was very nice since it was still warm and soft.

We also tried the kaya puff (RM1.30) with a nice homemade kaya jam, and a sesame ball (RM1) with red bean paste filling - all of which we enjoyed.

Verdict: Nice pastries, especially when eaten warm (freshly baked daily).
