Wagasa Yakiniku, Bukit Jalil, KL

If you're looking for something special for date night / family night out, Wagasa Yakiniku, located at The Link 2 in Bukit Jalil, offers an authentic Japanese yakiniku dining experience that is sure to please. The menu features premium A5 Japanese Wagyu from Kagoshima prefecture, Kurobuta pork as well as a variety of seafood.

Wagasa, literally translates as traditional umbrellas in Japanese; as you step foot into this restaurant, you will be greeted by the colorful sight of hanging umbrellas. You will be ushered into one of the private rooms so you can enjoy an intimate meal with your family or friends.

During our visit, we had the Japanese A5 Wagyu Shoulder Clod set (RM388 for 300g) which comes with 5 different cuts. The cuts were well-marbled, with differing textures when cooked. You can either self-grill or one of the friendly staff can assist you. The meat is grilled over charcoal embers, to your preferred doneness. The wagyu was really good, tender and flavorful. You can pair the meat with one of 3 condiments available - sesame oil and salt, chilli oil or garlic and coriander.

Refillable side dishes served with your meal

Other than wagyu, you can also get Kurobuta pork, highly revered for its outstanding texture, flavour and juiciness. We had the Kurobuta pork belly (RM48), with great, even marbling and fat layers. Very delicious indeed!

This year's Mother's Day celebration was slightly different due to the Movement Control Order. Instead of going out for a meal, we stayed in and got Korean BBQ delivered right to our doorstep.

Apple Samgyupsal: Korean BBQ At Home

The stars were definitely aligned, as there was a light shower in the afternoon making the weather perfectly cool for an al fresco BBQ session.

We got the “Korean BBQ at Home” set from Apple Samgyupsal which comes with 3 types of meat (original samgyupsal, marinated moksal and dakgalbi spicy chicken), 2 types dipping sauces, 3 types ban chans and 4 packets of Jin Ramyeon. The Instant Grill is ready to use in 15 mins and will last for 1.5 hours. We also recommend the Makgeolli as the perfect accompaniment to your KBBQ experience.

The "Korean BBQ at Home" set is delivered in a box. The meats are placed in an insulated bag to keep chilled throughout the journey and the sauces and ban chan are nicely packed and sealed in plastic containers.

Recipe: Saba Teriyaki (Grilled Mackerel in Teriyaki Sauce)

Saba teriyaki is our favourite yakimono ็„ผใ็‰ฉ (grilled dish) to order whenever we visit a Japanese restaurant. To my delight, this dish can easily be recreated at home, using frozen saba (mackerel) fillets which you can get in the supermarkets. They are usually sold in packs of two or three fillets - which can feed 2 to 4 pax (depending on how hungry you are).

Saba teriyaki recipe

For the teriyaki sauce, simply combine the Japanese soy sauce, cooking sake, mirin and sugar. Marinate the fish fillets in some of the sauce and then cook in the oven for 15 minutes until the skin is crispy, blistered and slightly charred in places. You can the saba teriyaki, along with rice, side salad, edamame and miso soup.

The first time I made this at home, the kids faces lit up as they took the first bite and they told me how it tastes exactly like the one we get in the Japanese restaurant. I'm so glad that they loved it. Since then, I've made this a few times for them, since they simply can't get enough of it.

Saba teriyaki recipe

Do also check out this post for the Japanese salad with wafu dressing (just like the ones you get in Japanese restaurants).

Step-by-step video instructions on how to cook saba teriyaki at home.

Saba Teriyaki (Grilled Mackerel in Teriyaki Sauce)
Original recipe by Baby Sumo
Preparation time: 5 minutes
Cooking time: 15-20 minutes
Serves 2-4

Ingredients
2 x frozen saba fillet (approx 300g), defrosted at room temperature for 1 hour

For the teriyaki sauce
1/4 cup Japanese soy sauce
1/4 cup cooking sake
1/4 cup mirin
2 tbsp caster sugar

To serve
2cm radish / daikon, grated

1. Line a baking tray with foil. Pat the fish dry with kitchen towel and place on the tray, skin side up.

2. In a bowl, mix the ingredients for teriyaki sauce until sugar is dissolved.

3. Spoon about 2 tablespoonfuls of sauce onto each fillet and leave to marinate for 15 minutes.

4. Preheat oven to 180°C (roast mode).

5. Place fish in oven and cook for 15 minutes, until skin is crispy and charred in places.

6. Meanwhile, place remaining teriyaki sauce in a small saucepan over medium heat. Simmer for about 2 minutes, until sauce is bubbling. Remove from heat.

7. Place fish on serving plate and spoon over the teriyaki sauce. Shape the daikon into a small mound and place on plate. Serve hot, with rice, miso soup, edamame and side salad.

Note:
1. My kids like LOTS of teriyaki sauce with their fish (like literally drowning in sauce), so you may halve the sauce recipe if you think this is too much sauce. Otherwise, you may store the leftover, unused sauce in a clean glass jar in the fridge for a week.
2. If you are using 3 saba fillets, please use this amount of teriyaki sauce: 3 tbsp caster sugar, 6 tbsp mirin, 6 tbsp cooking sake and 6 tbsp Japanese soy sauce.

The Wagyu Restaurant KL: All About Japanese Wagyu

Japanese Wagyu beef is recognised as the most prized beef in the world. At The Wagyu Restaurant, you can indulge in this Japanese delicacy at wallet-friendly prices.

The restaurant owners, who are also wagyu wholesalers, import the whole cow from Japan and the meat is hand carved by the Japanese chefs here hence the ability to keep the prices lower than other yakiniku restaurants in Malaysia, while providing diners with the most authentic dining experience.

The Wagyu Restaurant is located in a bungalow building on Lorong Yap Kwan Seng, above their sister restaurant Suzuki Hanten. Currently, there are only six tables in the restaurant hence reservations are highly recommended.

Here at The Wagyu Restaurant, they are serving Nishiawa A4 and A5 Japanese Wagyu from the Tokushima Prefecture, with a marbling score of 5 to 7. To retain freshness, the meat is sliced to order.

You can find affordable lunch sets, with items such as hambagu and Wagyu steak and in the evenings, you can get yakiniku from the a la carte menu. The prices are very fair, eg. a small yakiniku BBQ plate, which comes with roughly 350g of meat is priced at RM188.  There is also a retail section in the restaurant, with some of their popular cuts on display in the chiller.

Some of the cuts we tried here include the Beef Tongue PRIME with salt leeks (RM49), Wagyu kalbi (RM48) and Wagyu loin (rare parts PRIME) (RM78). The beef is grilled over charcoal embers, which has been heated to 450 to 500 degrees celcius. Everything was so good - absolutely tender, melt-in-the-mouth goodness.

Beef tongue with salt leeks - served with a wedge of lemon to remove any gaminess.

Wagyu loin (rare parts) - thick, rich, flavourful cut. Super tender! My personal favourite.

Wagyu kalbi (short ribs) - for those who like it slightly meatier.

Soon to be introduced to the menu is the shabu-shabu style grilled wagyu, whereby thin slices of wagyu loin is flash cooked over the hot grill, and served rare with either ponzu sauce with radish or a raw egg, seasoned with salt, pepper and sesame oil. Loved this!

Look at the marbling on the beef!

To complement your meal, choose from a selection of homemade Korean appetizers such as kimchi, namul, salad or Korean pancakes. Some of our favourites include the Royal fern and Cucumber kimchi. (Fun fact: yakiniku actually has its roots in Korean cuisine, hence why you can often find many Korean dishes in Japanese yakiniku restaurants).

Click here to view the lunch and dinner menu. Please note that yakiniku is currently only available for dinner.

Opening times: 12pm - 3pm; 6pm - 11pm. Closed on Mondays.

Location: The Wagyu Restaurant, First Floor, 20, Lorong Yap Kwan Seng, 50450 Kuala Lumpur Malaysia.(Upstairs of SUZUKI HANTEN. Free street parking)
