Waroeng Penyet, Nu Sentral: Indonesian Food

Who doesn't love a good fried chicken? Recently during a visit to Nu Sentral with the kids, we decided to have lunch at Waroeng Penyet, serving Indonesian "fast food" such as its famous ayam penyet. Other items here include fried catfish, beef, prawn, soups and grilled items.

Place your order at the counter, pay, you will be given a number and the food will be served to your table once ready.

We had the Ayam penyet paha (flattened chicken thigh RM10.50) which comes with fried tofu, tempeh and fresh local vegetables (cucumber haha!). The crispy chicken has been marinated in Java spices and then deep fried. It was moist and juicy. You can eat it with one of three types of sambal (self-service) depending on the spiciness level that you like.

We also ordered the bawal penyet (flattened fried pomfret (RM14.50)). The pomfret was a good size, so there was plenty of meat for sharing. Similarly it comes with fried tofu, tempeh and cucumber.  Hubby loves the rawon soup (RM10.90), and orders it whenever he comes across it in an Indonesian restaurant. The beef soup gets its colour from the black nut (keluak). Usually the restaurants tend to use lesser quality beef cuts so it can be chewy, but the beef chunks here were pretty tender.

Opening times: 10am to 10pm daily.

Price: Total bill rm39.90 for 4 pax.

Location: Waroeng Penyet, Lot 4-08, Nu Sentral Mall, Level 4, 201 Jalan Tun Sambanthan, 50470 Kuala Lumpur.

Tel: 03-2276 3364

B.bap Korean Food, Nu Sentral, KL

It's been a while since we had Korean food, so we decided to try B.bap Korean Food located in Nu Sentral shopping mall.  B.bap menu consists of an array of Korean dishes such as bibimbap, tteokbokki, ramyeon, jap chae, kimchi jjigae, pajeon and more. Service is fast here, with food being served within 10 minutes of ordering.

Hubby ordered the kimchi and seafood fried rice (bokkeumbap) (RM19); the rice came with squid and prawns, topped with a fried egg. He enjoyed this. We were served 3 types of complimentary ban chan (side dishes - kimchi, cucumber and anchovies) as well as a bowl of beansprouts soup each.

3 types of banchan

I had the dolsot bibimbap with beef (RM21); rice with namul (sauteed and seasoned vegetables such as carrots, spinach, onion, mushrooms, zucchini and seaweed), gochujang and a fried egg served in a Korean stone bowl. Stir thoroughly and enjoy - this was very tasty, though I would have liked the stone pot to be hotter so that we can get a crispy layer of rice at the bottom and on the sides. For those who do not take beef, there is also a chicken, squid or vegetarian option.

Verdict: Overall, a fast and satisfying meal in a casual environment.

There is also a B.bap Korean Bistro at Avenue K.

Opening times: 10am to 10pm daily.

Price: Total bill RM40.

Location: B.bap Korean Food, Lot GF08, Nu Sentral, 201 Jalan Tun Sambanthan, 50740 Kuala Lumpur.
