Harry Ramsden Fish & Chips Shop, Genting SkyWorlds

Last month, we took the kids to Genting Highlands during the school holidays. And this is the REAL reason why we (the parents) wanted to go there.. to eat fish and chips lol!

I personally think it’s one of the best fish and chips you can find in Malaysia. The last time, we had it at Harry Ramsden at Sky Avenue, and was pleased to discover that they also have one outlet inside Genting Skyworlds. We stopped here for lunch; simply order at the counter and you will be given a number which will be called once your order is ready.

They have plenty of al fresco seating here; it simply is the best setting for enjoying your fish and chips. Cool crisp highlands air, with your fish and chips, will transport you straight back to Scotland.

Foodwise, the chips portion is a lil small but a huge improvement tastewise; this time, the chips were nice and crisp. Having your food cooked to order sure makes all the difference! They ran out of haddock so we had cod instead and it’s just as good as we remembered it.

Price: RM39 per set, inclusive of one drink. (updated 11/12/22 RM48 per set)

Location: Harry Ramsden Fish & Chips Shop, Genting SkyWorlds, Resorts World Genting, Genting Highlands, Malaysia (near Central Park).

Wagyu Pho, Bukit Jalil, KL

We chanced upon Wagyu Pho during our recent visit to Pavilion Bukit Jalil. The restaurant is located in one of the shophouses facing the mall, adjacent to Parkson Level 2 exit.

Since the restaurant is called Wagyu Pho, the boys said it would be a crime not to order the Wagyu pho (RM36.90). It comes with Wagyu beef slices, served rare, which continues to cook in the hot broth. They serve some Thai basil and culantro, which you pick off the stalks / tear into smaller pieces and add to your broth. Using a unique family recipe, the broth has been boiled for 12 hours, for a rich, typical Saigon taste.

They also have regular pho (RM18.90) or mixed pho with sliced beef, beef balls, tendon and brisket (RM28.90).

Pork-free. Full menu can be viewed here.

Opening hours: 11am - 3pm; 5pm - 10pm. Closed on Mondays.

Price: Total bill RM131.60 for 4 pax.

Location: Wagyu Pho - Vietnamese Noodles House, Aurora Place, D-1-10, Plaza Bukit Jalil, 57000 Kuala Lumpur.

Menya Appare, Isetan The Gardens, KL

Located at the newly opened The Table in Isetan The Gardens, Menya Appare is well worth visiting for its Japanese ramen. Each bowl of ramen is made from carefully selected ingredients, both imported from Japan and locally sourced. Appare in Japanese means "wonderful" or "brilliant" and the ramen we had here sure was "appare".

We had the Deluxe Tonkotsu Ramen (RM38) as well as the Deluxe Black Tonkotsu Ramen (RM39), which comes with pork shoulder char siew and pork belly char siew, ajitama and seaweed.

The broth is rich and flavorful; pork bones undergo over 20 different processes for more than 48 hours for maximum flavour extraction.  The black tonkotsu ramen comes with black ma-oil, a fragrant garlic oil made from a blend of 7 types of garlic. The ajitama here, made with Kenkori eggs, is superb, with a perfectly runny centre.

If you order the set, it also comes with 3 pieces of gyoza and refillable green tea.

Opening hours: Tue-Sun 11.30am - 3pm; 5.30pm - 9pm. Closed on Mondays

Location: Menya Appare, Isetan The Gardens, The Table, 3F, The Gardens Mall, Lingkaran Syed Putra, Mid Valley City, 59200 Kuala Lumpur. (Parking RM2 for first 3 hours on weekday, RM3 for first 3 hours on weekend)

Ideal Recipes for Your Kids with Alce Nero™ Condiments

Cooking is a life skill that is increasingly valued globally. Families are encouraging children to start cooking from a young age to encourage independence.

Encourage your child, starting with simple tasks such as preparing cold beverages, salad or other dishes that require assembly or baking rather than stove-top skills. As they gain confidence they can graduate to stove-top cooking with your guidance. With more practice, they can soon prepare snacks, drinks and salads for themselves and for the family.

Some of the easiest recipes for children use condiments to impart flavours that uplift even the simplest preparations to the next level. Alce Nero™, a leader in organic food including, pasta, pasta sauces, honey, jams, olive oil, apple cider vinegar and balsamic vinegar among others, has compiled four simple recipes to get children started on a culinary journey for World Parents’ Day Celebration on July 24 and for everyday thereafter.

The condiments featured are Alce Nero™ Apple Cider Vinegar, Alce Nero™ Balsamic Vinegar, Alce Nero™ Organic Wildflower Honey and Alce Nero™ Extra Virgin Olive Oil. These organic condiments are packed with health benefits, being a mainstay of the heart-healthy Mediterranean diet[1].

Share these recipe ideas with your kids and help them pamper you!

Caprese Salad

Caprese salad offers great flavour from the combination of just a few ingredients. Only the tangy balsamic glaze requires minor stove-top time.

Make the balsamic vinegar glaze by placing the Alce Nero™ Balsamic Vinegar into a small saucepan, bring to a gentle boil on low heat. It should reduce and thicken in 6 to 8 minutes. Set aside. Select fresh, juicy and sweet tomatoes, Roma tomatoes are best but any large red tomato can be used. Slice tomatoes and fresh mozzarella into 1 cm thick rounds. Eat the less than perfect rounds of tomatoes and cheese – chef’s treat!

On a plate, arrange the tomato and cheese slices, overlapping and alternating them. Wash and pat dry fresh sweet basil leaves. Arrange over the beautifully assembled tomato and cheese slices. Drizzle with the balsamic vinegar glaze and Alce Nero™ Extra Virgin Olive Oil before sprinkling with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper.

Why this recipe: Output is greater than input. You will be impressed, kids will be delighted by their own capabilities, and everyone can dig in to one of the simplest and tastiest salads.

Prep time: 10 minutes, cook time: 10 minutes, serves: 4 pax

Sparkling Apple Cider Vinegar Limeade

The kids can energise weekend meals, or weekday dinner with this sparkling apple cider vinegar limeade. So easy and so refreshing, especially on hot days. In a jug, combine 3 litre sparkling water, 3 tablespoon of Alce Nero™ Apple Cider Vinegar, juice from 5 limes, and 4 tablespoon of Alce Nero™ Organic Wildflower Honey. Mix well, then top with ice cubes. Pour into pretty glasses, garnish with lime slices, take a sip, sigh with happiness and enjoy with the family.

Why this recipe: Great for young children as it is so simple but can look so fancy with a bit of garnish and a metal or glass straw. For parents, it is a healthier option to coffee.

Prep time: 10 minutes, no cooking required, serves: 5 pax

Spaghetti with Olive Oil and Garlic (Aglio e Olio)

Perhaps the simplest spaghetti dish for beginners but the taste is worth much more than the minimal effort. Your child may require help with this one if they are inexperienced with stove-top cooking.

Prepare 450g Alce Nero™ Spaghetti according to the pack instruction. Six minutes in boiling water for al dente pasta. As the pasta cooks, in a large fry pan combine garlic, Alce Nero™ Extra Virgin Olive Oil, salt, and red pepper flakes to taste, and warm over low heat until the garlic softens and turns golden. Chef’s tip if you love garlic add more for a more intense flavour.

Drain the pasta, reserving about a ½ cup of the cooking water. Add the Alce Nero™ Spaghetti and the reserved water to the garlic mixture. Mix well until the Alce Nero™ Spaghetti is well coated in garlicky olive oil. Transfer to a large serving bowl or divide among individual plates. For garnish, add parsley and lemon zest. Serve immediately.

Why this recipe: Simple pantry staples come together quickly and easily in this Italian classic. Kids will feel accomplished making this, and you won’t need to make dinner.

Prep time: 10 minutes, cook time: 15 minutes, serves: 5 pax

Tomato Bruschetta

Café quality starter that is as tasty as it is pretty.

Preheat oven to 200 degrees C. Place bread slices on a baking sheet. Toast for 5 minutes. Remove from oven. Rub the toasted side with cut garlic. Set aside. In a bowl, toss chopped tomatoes, cheese, Alce Nero™ Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Alce Nero™ Balsamic Vinegar, onion, basil, salt and pepper together. Divide evenly over the toast.

Why this recipe: Kids love making something that their family can enjoy together, and this recipe is simple and stunning.

Prep time: 10 minutes, cook time: 10 minutes, serves: 5 pax

Recipe: Spaghetti Carbonara

The Unc was back for a short trip recently, and with him, he brought all the ingredients needed to make Pasta Carbonara for us. An authentic version is made using guanciale (cured pork cheek), pecorino romano and Parmigiano Reggiano with eggs (no cream!). For the pasta, we used spaghettoni (a thicker version of spaghetti).

Perfectly Al dente, rich and creamy.. loved it! Thanks to The Unc for making this for us :)

Spaghettoni Carbonara
Recipe by Baby Sumo
Preparation time: 10-15 minutes
Cooking time:20-25 minutes
Serves 6

Ingredients
600g spaghettoni (or spaghetti)
215g guanciale, crusts trimmed and sliced
3 eggs, plus 1 extra egg yolk
Freshly grated black pepper
215g pecorino cheese, grated
Parmigiano Reggiano

1. In a pot of salted water, cook the spaghettoni pasta for 16 mins, according to packet instruction.

2. In a pan, arrange guanciale and cook until fat is rendered and crispy. You may need to do this in two batches. Remove and set aside.

3. Beat eggs then add grated Pecorino romano and mix well.

4. Add freshly grated black pepper to hot oil. Then, add cooked pasta and 1 1/2 cup pasta water. Stir vigorously. Turn off heat. Add eggs and pecorino cheese and mix well until pasta is creamy. Add 3/4 of the guanciale back to the pasta.

5. Serve in individual plates and garnish with the remaining guanciale and generous shaving of Parmesan.

148% Boost in Affiliate Sales for Local Prepaid Sellers on Shopee

148% Boost in Affiliate Sales for Local Prepaid Sellers on Shopee
Malaysians help local sellers to drive tangible results with Shopee Affiliate Programme

The internet, social media, and affiliate market have changed dramatically over the past year. Enabled across the board and many product categories, the top three most popular products among Shopee Affiliates span across telco prepaid cards, followed by mobile phones and women’s watches.

Shopee witnessed a 148% year-on-year boost in local telco prepaid cards sold through the Shopee Affiliate Programme throughout Malaysia between January to August 2022 compared to last year. Between 1 July and now shows that local sellers selling prepaid cards have received a traffic boost of at least 6.1 million clicks from Shopee Affiliates.

According to Shopee, this trend aligns with market data towards an increase in millennial spending and telecommunication penetration rate. Users have become much more tech-savvy and are actively seeking services that suit their increasingly digital lifestyle, from how they reload mobile prepaid to how they pay their bills. This reflects the need for users to source more affordable and convenient alternatives in the market.

Huiyan Pan, Head of Brand Marketing at Shopee Malaysia, shared that telco prepaid cards are popular among Shopee Affiliates to promote and for industry players to keep ahead with more promotional activities. With many new channels evolving and affiliates thriving on their knowledge and influence over niche audiences, they have become an important channel to drive sales and awareness for sellers on Shopee.

“We want to open up more opportunities for affiliates to earn a side income by optimizing their social media following while increasing sellers' online sales. As the market continues to grow, the programme’s benefits are more apparent to sellers of all sizes, and we can expect to see more involvement of Shopee Affiliates in the coming years,” added Pan.

Shopee strives to empower affiliates to showcase their creativity and build authentic connections while helping local sellers grow their social presence and drive tangible results.

The Shopee Affiliate Programme is a free initiative for affiliates to earn cash incentives for every completed order via their personalized link. The programme currently serves as a means for non-Shopee shop owners to earn additional income from their social media followings.

Shopee Celebrates the Heart of Malaysia on E-Commerce

60% of Malaysian consumers are proactively supporting local sellers with #ShopeeSapotLokal, at the live reveal of the platform’s largest marketplace study this year, Celebrating the Heart of Malaysia on E-Commerce*, in conjunction with the company’s 9.9 Super Shopping Day.

When 3,356 consumers were asked “Why do you think it is important to support local sellers?” between 19 July to 17 August 2022, 30% endorsed the quality of Made-in-Malaysia goods that cater to their local preferences, 20% stated that they want to keep the economy running for patriotic reasons and 8% were sellers supporting other local sellers in the same boat. 42% preferred shopping local to get their items delivered faster.

Among these respondents, half of them (54%) are working full time, 18% are in-between jobs, 17% are senior citizens, 6% are stay-at-home parents and 5% are university students.

Shopee also examined what Malaysians valued about online shopping. Over 70% of consumers surveyed estimated that their everyday online shopping transactions resulted in savings of over 5% consistently.

“Interestingly, not all buyers prioritise discounts and vouchers exclusively. Seven in 10 Malaysians value peace of mind over lower price,” according to Kenneth Soh, Head of Marketing Campaigns at Shopee Malaysia.

Nine in 10 Malaysians still buy online despite the reopening of physical outlets because it is a learned and adopted habit. The majority value having ‘peace of mind’, with 40% enjoying the convenience of parcels delivered to their doorstep, 17% feeling safe with Shopee Guarantee, and 10% trusting reviews and pictures from other buyers.

For 49% of buyers, Shopee is the top-of-mind shopping destination for lifestyle products, including home decoration items, fashion pieces, and health and beauty products. Apart from that, 24% of buyers purchase living essentials (groceries and diapers) from Shopee, 16% look for tech devices (computers, mobile devices and TV) and the remaining 11% buy automobile parts or work and school supplies.

“When Malaysian consumers express their values through online shopping preferences this way, we truly understand why eight in 10 local sellers started their selling journey online with Shopee. We are humbled to discover that half of our local sellers surveyed say the income earned on our platform is crucial as it enables them to support their families,” said Soh.

The majority of local sellers began selling online with Shopee to overcome existing limitations on their earnings and participation in the economy: 24% because it is their only source of income, 5% can’t get a job, 18% need to supplement income and 24% feel the pressures of higher costs of living. 30% said they became Shopee sellers because of their passion for their business.
