Shopee Express Couriers Drive Community Inclusion and Business Success

Shopee Express Couriers Drive Community Inclusion and Business Success
Backbone of Community Enablers: Almost 90% of Couriers Driving Change Beyond Deliveries

A new study by Shopee Express has found that 1,317 Malaysian couriers are committed to building robust relationships with local communities. 87% of couriers surveyed provide trustworthy nationwide delivery services, engage with people from diverse cultures, and develop a deeper understanding of the areas they operate in. The remaining believe that their work enables local businesses to expand their market reach, which contributes to their growth and creates new job opportunities.

The success of businesses and communities relies heavily on these couriers who are truly unsung heroes. Especially for local businesses, they are always adapting to meet the changing demands of their customers, while many households, especially those of the elderly and disadvantaged, have greatly benefited from the services of couriers. This is made possible by the fact that 80% of couriers deliver at least 80 parcels on a daily basis, while the rest handle a smaller number of parcels due to other commitments.

Given their intention to deliver parcels safely to the customers they value, 80% of couriers prioritise customer needs by considering factors such as urgency, location, and timing, while the other 20% take into account their own capabilities, such as parcel size, weight, and order received, when evaluating the feasibility of delivering parcels.

When asked ”What do you enjoy most about working as a Shopee Express courier?” – 56% of couriers enjoy the job’s flexibility and breaks, 25% value the opportunity to take ownership of their successes and hard work, and 19% appreciate the teamwork and training courses that come with being part of the community. Couriers also have been able to support their households by scheduling work trips at their convenience, which allows them to maintain their standard of living while continuing to develop their skills.

With countless deliveries to complete everyday, these couriers believe that having certain qualities is helpful in making them more efficient and productive. 80% of couriers surveyed identified honesty and reliability as crucial – they are responsible for delivering parcels safely, on time, and securely to customers. 20% think that possessing a positive mindset and ample knowledge is essential, which means being able to adapt to changes and staying calm in difficult situations.

All couriers know that customers want their parcels to arrive safely. 8 out of 10 couriers recalled pushing through circumstances to deliver in bad weather or remote areas, whereas the remaining couriers remembered playing a role in making someone feel valued by delivering for special occasions. These experiences motivate couriers to keep doing their job as it reminds them of the positive impact they have on people's lives.

Cheah Lee Sun, Head of Shopee Express, said, “Our couriers clearly play a crucial role in the communities they serve. We appreciate their tireless efforts to complete deliveries on time and build stronger connections with customers. As the backbone of our business, we are here listening to their needs and accommodating them as much as we can. This is just one of the ways we provide a better peace of mind not just to our couriers, but also to our customers who rely on us to deliver their parcels with utmost care and efficiency."

When asked how being a Shopee Express courier impacted their lives, 34% of couriers had improved their time management skills by prioritising their tasks effectively. For 27% of them, their work allowed them to provide meaningful support to their families. 23% learned about the importance of being accountable in delivering parcels, and 16% felt a sense of purpose in life and saw opportunities for career advancement.

“We are happy to see that many of them have a better understanding of how to communicate with customers, build rapport, and become more skilled over time in managing a consistent stream of work and balancing personal responsibilities,” Cheah concluded.

Over 9,000 Malaysians Raise Funds for Environmental Sustainability with #ShopeeGivesBack

Over 9,000 Malaysians Raise Funds for Environmental Sustainability with #ShopeeGivesBack
Donors pledge their support for a more sustainable nation, with 61% donating for the first time

#ShopeeGivesBack, Shopee’s long-term community initiative, has raised over RM48,000 from 1 May 2020 to 31 July 2022 for two Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) championing environmentally-conscious efforts in Malaysia. Over two years, WWF-Malaysia and Zero Waste Malaysia received donations from over 9,000 donors, including over 5,500 first time donors.

85% of the funds raised went to assisting WWF-Malaysia, a national conservation trust with more than 90 ongoing projects nationwide. Funds raised are used to safeguard some of Malaysia’s most iconic wildlife – including the Malayan tiger, Bornean elephants, Bornean orangutans and sea turtles – from threats such as poaching and habitat loss. WWF-Malaysia continues to address environmental issues to spread awareness, support education and research, and conserve the local landscape flora and fauna, water, soils, and other natural resources.

Across the two years, Zero Waste Malaysia received 15% of their total donations through #ShopeeGivesBack, supporting them in their efforts to go further in achieving their mission of building a waste-free and sustainable future for the nation. Zero Waste Malaysia advocates for sustainable development and aims to increase the local community’s awareness of sustainable living through education, resources, public engagement, and on-ground initiatives. In 2021 alone, Zero Waste Malaysia received 13% of their total donations through #ShopeeGivesBack.

Huiyan Pan, Head of Brand Marketing at Shopee Malaysia said, “Shopee is moved by the reception of the community in supporting the efforts of our NGO partners in contributing towards environmental change. We firmly believe that with greater awareness and support from shoppers on our marketplace, we can strike a balance towards building a long-term, sustainable future for the environment and the economy.”

“Shopee appreciates being able to play a part in WWF-Malaysia’s conservation efforts and is thrilled to hear about the efforts that have reduced 90% of snare encounters for the Malayan tiger. In 2020 and 2021, more fresh sightings of the tigers, including a mother and three cubs, were discovered in the Belum-Temengor Forest Complex,” Pan continued.

During Ramadan in 2021 and 2022, these two NGOs saw a collective month-on-month increase in donations of 85% and 113% respectively, from March to April compared to other months through #ShopeeGivesBack. Of the 1,400 donations received, WWF-Malaysia and Zero Waste Malaysia saw 1,000 first time donors donating during a time where generous Malaysians were giving back to communities and causes close to their hearts and values.

“The majority of our donations come from the public, hence the #ShopeeGivesBack platform has helped us reach wider audiences to raise the much needed public support that ensures the continuity of WWF-Malaysia’s vital conservation projects. WWF-Malaysia is also taking action to promote sustainable lifestyles and increase resilience to climate change through policy advocacy and conserving natural ecosystems,” said Helina Yow, Director of Partnerships, WWF-Malaysia.

#ShopeeGivesBack was launched on 1 May 2020 to help the underserved communities in Malaysia across four areas: underprivileged communities development, children and family services, health charities, and environmental charities. The platform provides Malaysians with an online avenue to support their favourite causes in the most convenient way. Shopee ensures that these NGOs have credible track records and are registered with the Registry of Societies.

A Smile for Every Child: RM100,000 worth of toys to underprivileged and oncology children through Mattel’s Happy Playcation campaign

With the objective of bringing A Smile for Every Child, toy company Mattel popular for signature brands like Hot Wheels, Uno and Barbie will be collaborating with e-commerce platform Shopee to send out toys worth up to RM100,000 as both companies look to address the need to uplift the spirits of underprivileged children during these turbulent times.

Pledging one toy for every order made via selected stores, Mattel and Shopee, as well as NGOs Dignity for Children Foundation and the Childhood Cancer Caring Society of Kuala Lumpur (CARES), are partnering on a special campaign called Happy Playcation taking place from 1 till 3 September 2021.

The participating stores are the Mattel, Barbie, Hot Wheels and Fisher-Price official stores on Shopee. To further encourage Malaysians to support the campaign, Mattel will offer up to 30% off on its toys during the campaign period.

Murat Ariksoy, General Manager of Mattel Continental Asia said, “We acknowledge the adverse impact of the global pandemic on children in terms of learning and simply having a memorable childhood. We are launching this campaign with the common goal of uplifting the next generation. We strive to enable all kids to feel like children again with this partnership, while seeding joy into the community and helping parents with our learning toys.”

This campaign is part of the #ShopeeGivesBack movement, which is aimed at creating awareness and driving donations for various charitable organisations to support their respective causes from healthcare and underprivileged communities to the marginalised, including animals.

Having started in 1998, the Dignity for Children Foundation provides education and care for marginalised and urban poor children in Kuala Lumpur. It currently serves over 1,700 children and youth aged 2-19 years, mainly operating education programmes in Sentul.

Liew Tong Ngan, Dignity's Director of Marketing and Communications said, “We are extremely grateful to be receiving these wonderful toys from Mattel to be distributed out to our children and youths. A very big thank you to Mattel and Shopee for remembering the underserved and allowing the young and old to reach their full potential through play."

Meanwhile, CARES is a non-profit NGO formed by parents whose children have been diagnosed with cancer, medical professionals and caring volunteers. CARES’s mission statement is to improve the quality of life and well-being of children and teens with cancer and at the same, to provide social support for the families and caregivers of the sick child while they undergo treatment for their medical conditions.

Ms. Margaret Low, CARES President said, “We’re honoured to be a part of this movement that will surely leave a positive impact in the lives of those children receiving these toys. Hopefully more meaningful initiatives like Happy Playcationwill be executed down the road to continue inspiring these special individuals of our community.”

Shopee Malaysia Senior Manager (Business Development) Zed Li said, “At a time when members of the community are battling with their own struggles to get through this difficult period, it is all the more important that we lend a helping hand in the best way that we can. The underprivileged children are a group whose needs should not be neglected, especially now, and it is crucial that we help alleviate the pressure they may be facing. Mattel’s Happy Playcation campaign seeks to do just that. We’re hopeful that this initiative will bring positivity to their lives, beyond the fun that they can have with the Mattel toys. We commend everyone involved for their efforts and are pleased to provide our support to Mattel’s Happy Playcation.”

This campaign coincides with Shopee’s 9.9 Super Shopping Day which has something in-store for all its users and is currently taking place till 9 September. Buyers can look forward to claiming Free Shipping and 99% Coins Cashback vouchers, both with no minimum spend.

On top of this, the Happy Playcation campaign will stream Shopee Live sessions to showcase how Malaysians can assist in bringing a smile to a child in need. The first Shopee Live guest session was held on 27 August at 3PM, which featured a guest speaker from the Dignity for Children Foundation.

The next session on 1 September at 8.30PM will host guest speakers from CARES, who will further highlight how this campaign will bring cheer to the children. Exciting giveaways and an unboxing session of Mattel toys will also take place.

The Happy Playcation campaign is also launched in collaboration with Shopee Mum’s Club, a one-stop shop for all mothers’ needs for their child. The club shares the same aspirations of bringing happiness to a child, even beyond a mother’s own. Happy Playcation will be handing out exclusive vouchers to club members to encourage participation of the campaign among the community of mothers.

Support Local Restaurants: Buy a Giftcard to Help Your Favourite Restaurants

Local restaurants are suffering due to the Movement Control Order (MCO) and many are deciding whether they close shop for good.

UMAI recently launched the largest directory of Malaysian restaurants and cafes that offer gift cards and vouchers, making it easier for diners to support their favorite restaurants by purchasing a gift card / vouchers which can be redeemed later. Buying full or discounted value vouchers will help restaurants with immediate cashflow, and offset lost income amidst the MCO.

Restaurants are struggling to stay afloat, as they are no longer allowed to serve customers in-house, and sales are down across the country. As F&B businesses typically operate at a 3 – 5% margin, there’s not much buffer room left for them to weather this out, putting their teams and business at risk of closure. While gift cards provide immediate income relief that will help these business continue running, less than 1% of Malaysian restaurants are offering this service – UMAI is offering this software for free, during this unprecedented times.

“There are a lot of restaurants that are deciding whether they stay is business or not,” says Co-Founder, Jonas Chelbat. “Our generosity, collectively as consumers, now literally affects the ability of your favorite restaurant to stay open.”

“At this point, the purchasing of gift cards is the best thing any of us can do to support restaurants – and it’s win- win. It’s like giving a restaurant or cafe a loan, and getting paid back in food, drinks and appreciation. We built this software so that consumers can purchase this on behalf of loved ones, support the less fortunate or simply for themselves during this difficult time,” says Co-Founder, Alexander Small. “The most important thing we can do is bring attention to the problem, and help the community play a role in solving it.”

The site currently features 63 restaurants that sell gift cards. UMAI is aiming to help at least 200 more restaurants make it onto the list. Visitors can:
• Search for a specific restaurant, or browse based on who has discounted gift cards - by area, cuisine type and so forth.
• Visitors can purchase a restaurants gift card directly from the restaurant’s website, by clicking on a
restaurant.
• Any restaurant can add their gift card to the directory.

Check out the website here: https://www.umai.io/en/malaysia

Baby Sumo Birthday Week #3: Lunch @ Prime, Le Meridien KL

Been a while since we had lunch at Prime KL, so we chose this as our last stop for my birthday week. For lunch, other than their a la carte menu, they also do a value-for-money Business Set Lunch (RM75 for 2-courses and RM92 for 3-courses) or Rush Hour 2-course express set lunch for RM70. The set lunch menu changes every 2 weeks.

Originally, I wanted to order my favorite Master Kobe oyster blade steak from their a la carte but I was swayed by the choices on the Business Set Lunch. So, set lunch it is this time.

Fantastic complimentary bread to start with 3 types of butter

The restaurant was very busy during lunch time, but we still managed to get a table in one of the private booths in the restaurant. To start, I ordered the Tian of Apple and Celery, Jumbo Crab with Coriander Lemon Prawn with Guacamole, Cress Mix and Crispy Tuile. Firstly, love the exquisite presentation of this dish. A light and appetizing dish, love the combination of flavours and textures. I enjoyed eating this very much too. And yup, no crab shells this time ;)

Hubby chose the Truffle Scented Coddle Egg, Grilled Brioche and Rocket Salad Lemon Dressing.

For mains, there was a choice of either salmon, beef rump stew or tenderloin steak. Obviously, we both went for the steak - an 8oz Charcoal Grilled Beef Mignon, served with Beef Cheek Croquette, Crusted Vegetables Tian and Truffle Jus. One arrived slightly charred on the outside... well, how did they know that was how my Hubby likes his steak? The perks of being a regular..... or just lucky. LOL! The steaks were cooked to a beautiful medium, very very juicy and delicious indeed.

And then, the waitresses appeared with balloons and a birthday platter and also sang "Happy Birthday". What a lovely, wonderful surprise. Hubby has secretly arranged for "Happy Birthday" to be written on my dessert but kudos to the team for making the extra effort.

Fudge brownie with vanilla ice cream - Hubby's dessert

Complimentary birthday slice for moi, the birthday girl

Thank you Hubby for the birthday treat once again!

Pork-free.

Opening times: Monday to Friday: 12.00pm to 2.30pm (Lunch); Monday to Sunday: 6.30pm to 11.00pm (Dinner)

Service: Excellent.

Price: RM75 for 2-courses and RM92 for 3-courses. No SPG discounts for set lunch.

PSA: Bintang The Bear Charity Campaign with Starwood KL Hotels

Starwood Hotels in Kuala Lumpur are teaming up in a joint effort to raise funds to financially support local children born with congenital heart defects. The initiative first mooted by Lé Meridien Kuala Lumpur saw great success in its first year in 2013. This year, four Starwood hotels in KL, Aloft Kuala Lumpur Sentral, The Westin Kuala Lumpur, Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur and Le Méridien Kuala Lumpur will coordinate efforts to raise funds for this worthy cause this Christmas.

Founded in 1996, ‘A heart for a heart’ charity programme was set up by Gleneagles Hospital to help children with critical congenital heart defects, who needed urgent financial aid due to limited financial means, and undergo corrective surgery at the Gleneagles Cardiac centre. This also enables children in critical condition from being on the waiting list.

Each hotel is selling “Bintang” the Bear soft toys, priced at RM50 each. The bears all feature four distinctive T-shirt designs reflecting the unique characteristics of the four brands and hotels. All proceeds from our “Bintang the Bear” Christmas Charity effort will be channeled to Gleneagles Hospital.

Recipe: Thai Yellow Curry Chicken + PSA: Stop Hunger Now (WORLDFOODS)

I still had a jar of WORLDFOODS Thai Yellow Curry Paste, so it was put to good use on one of those busy days where I wanted to cook a quick yet nutritious dinner for my family. This curry paste is described as medium hot, fragrant yellow curry paste spiced with turmeric and various Thai spices and herbs.

For this curry, I used chicken breast which is cut into bite-sized chunks. We also just harvested some long beans from our garden, so this also went into the curry. Usually for Thai curries (kaeng), coconut milk is used but I substituted with regular cow's milk, something which I started doing in the UK as it was slightly harder to source for fresh coconut milk. In this instance, we were just too lazy to drive out to get some freshly grated coconut.

Thai Yellow Curry Chicken

Served with a bowl of rice, this was extremely good - creamy and mildly spicy. The kids surprised us when they asked for more after the first spoonful. I asked them if it was spicy, and they replied "A bit but it's yummy!".  Most of us ended up "tambah nasi" (having another bowl of rice) to soak up the lovely curry sauce.

Thai yellow curry chicken
Recipe by Baby Sumo
Preparation time: 15 minutes
Cooking time: 10-12 minutes
Serves 4

Ingredients
1 jar (200g) WORLDFOODS Thai yellow curry paste
500g chicken breast, cut into small chunks
2 tbsp cooking oil
350-400ml milk
4-5 cloves of garlic, finely chopped
1 large onion, cut into 1/8ths
3 long beans, cut into 1 inch lengths
1 red chilli, sliced thinly

1. In a wok, heat the cooking oil over medium high heat. Add the garlic and cook for 1 1/2 minutes until lightly browned. Then, add the onion and stir fry for a further minute.

2. Add the chicken pieces and cook for 3-4 minutes, until the chicken pieces are almost (90%) cooked through. Add the Thai yellow curry paste and fry for 1-2 minutes until fragrant. Add the long beans, red chillies and milk, and simmer over medium heat until the milk is very hot. Once hot, taste and season with salt as necessary and add more milk if you find it too spicy. Serve immediately with white rice.

For Christmas 2013 WORLDFOODS wishes to give something back to those in crisis.

Stop Hunger Now is a charity that aims to end world hunger in our lifetime, a cause which is close to WORLDFOODS Global Business Director May Foong’s heart. WORLDFOODS wishes to help feed the poor, who can’t feed themselves.

WORLDFOODS will be implementing a Christmas Charity campaign in which they look to match the first 5,000 “Likes” they receive on their Facebook page with a donation of $1 (per each new like) to Stop Hunger Now.

What will the money go towards? In 2005 Stop Hunger Now launched their meal packing programme perfecting an assembly process of small meal packets that contain essential vitamins and minerals and have a 2 year shelf life. These cost only 25 cents. This means that a $1 dollar donation from WORLDFOODS will feed four hungry mouths. 70% of their meals are provided to transformational development programs such as school feeding, vocational training, early childhood development and orphanages.

Stop Hunger Now has also provided 1.6 million Meals to the victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.

All you have to do is to go to the WORLDFOODS Facebook page and LIKE it. Remember, every 1 like will feed 4 hungry mouths. Thank you :)
