Weekend All-You-Can-Eat Dim Sum @ Royal Canton KL

Love dim sum? Royal Canton recently launched their Weekend All-You-Can-Eat Dim Sum, showcasing over 48 varieties of handcrafted dim sum and desserts by Chef Poh and his team.

This special promotion is available every Saturday, Sunday and Public Holiday from 10:30am to 2:30pm at Royal Canton, DC Mall and is priced at RM48 nett per adult, RM38 nett for senior citizens (60 year old and above), and RM28 nett per child (3 to 10 years old).

Choose from steamed, deep fried or baked dim sum, steamed buns, steamed rice rolls, porridge, steamed rice and desserts. Our personal favourites here include siew mai, har gao, traditional lo mai gai, spinach and shrimp dumpling and the baked egg tarts.  For desserts, we highly recommend the Ma lai gao and Mango sago with pomelo.

The dim sum is made to order and you may order as much and as many times as you like, however do note that wastage will be charged according to menu price.

Royal Canton, DC Mall: Dim Sum Platter & More!

Over the weekend, we visited Royal Canton in DC Mall, KL to check out their latest promotions as well as refreshed dim sum selections.

We started off our meal with the 3x3 dim sum platter, which features nine different types of dim sum  items nicely presented in a wooden box. Perfect for those who want to try a variety of dim sum here without having to order a full portion everytime. The dim sum varieties may vary on a daily basis but rest assured that they will always be of similar quality, made with high quality ingredients.  Royal Canton prides themselves with serving their customers only freshly made dim sum (never frozen), with no preservatives or artificial colouring used in their dim sum.

During our visit, we had the Ma lai gao, Siew mai, Steamed char siew bao, Har gao, Baked Portuguese egg tart, Wu kok (taro dumpling with pork), Salad prawn dumpling, Dried scallop, spinach and shrimp dumpling and Lao sa bao (salted egg custard bun). Every component was well-made and served hot, we thoroughly enjoyed it.  Available daily for lunch, now priced at RM23 (normal price RM33).

Other than dim sum, Royal Canton also offers an amazing selection of a la carte Chinese dishes. Our Lala King aka Baby D was delighted when the Steamed lala steam in superior soup (RM18/500g) arrived at our table. The lala clams were fresh and sweet, cooked in a deliciously spicy superior stock with ginger and cili padi. Both the kids had two bowls of this.. yum!

BabySumoKids also shared a basket of siew mai (pork and shrimp dumpling with fish roe) (RM9.50) as well as the Stir fried Australian Black Angus beef with Cambodian kampot pepper served on a hotplate (RM48 for small). Superb dish - the beef was tender and loved the peppery, fragrant Cambodian kampot pepper.

Meanwhile, the adults tackled one of their signature dishes, the German-style Crispy pork knuckle (RM38 for medium, RM76 for large). WOW was the first word that came out of our mouths as we took our first bite - super crispy crackling with juicy, tender meat. Even better than the ones we previously tried in Germany. We were told that it is first marinated, steamed and then deep fried before serving. The pork knuckle is served with a spicy, tangy dipping sauce. Great with a glass of cold German beer (they serve Weihenstephan here). Hubby is a happy man!

Not to be missed here are their flaky, buttery Baked egg tarts too! We also love their Deep fried fresh prawn and beancurd roll (RM9.50), Ginger soup sesame tong yuen (RM8) and Mango sago with pomelo (RM10).

Sunday Brunch: Dim Sum & Wine Pairing at Royal Canton, KL

Have you ever experimented with dim sum and wine before? Recently we were invited to Royal Canton to experience their inaugural Dim Sum and Wine Pairing luncheon.. and what a revelation it was!

In collaboration with Delia Wines Sdn Bhd, diners will be guided through the 6-course dim sum lunch with premium French wine pairing by one of the owners of the wine company, Laurent Robert or Chaebok Kim-Robert (Sook). These wines have been specially selected through various food tastings, to complement the dim sum perfectly.

To start, we had the delicate Har Gao and Chive Dumpling, paired with an equally light Domaine des Poncetys Saint Veran Les Climats 2016. 100% organic, this fruity Chardonnay goes well with prawn-based dishes. Made with finesse, we loved the plump dumplings with juicy prawns.

The Domaine Delobel Sauvignon Blanc 2016 was another organic wine selected to pair with the pork-based dim sum dishes - siew mai and steamed spare ribs. Our host, Sook would come around to explain about each wine and its tasting notes, and how best to pair the food with the wine, enhancing our enjoyment of the dishes in whole.

The Enoki Mushroom Beancurd Roll and Crispy Sakura Prawn Cake - both deep fried dim sum items, were paired with the smooth, elegant Domaine de La Sangliere Cote de Provence Lalonde Rose 2016.

Served with the Crispy bacon and fluffy Scallion pancake was the Chateau Ferthis Cuvee Ulysse 2015.  This full-bodied red with notes of red fruits and spices pairs well with the sweet, sticky and spicy bacon.

My personal favorite was the tender, flavorful Iberico Pork Neck served with glutinous rice paired with the intensely smooth Domaine Gallety 2015, which goes well with virtually any type of food.

As a huge fan of Riesling, I loved the Domaine Rolly Gassmann Riesling Reserve Millesime 2014, served with the Mango Sago dessert. Lush and easy-to-drink, with an aromatic, zesty finish.

The dim sum brunch will usually be held on the first Sunday of the month (next one will be on 8 July 2018) at Royal Canton, DC Mall. Priced at RM168+ per person. Please call 03-2731 4628 to make your reservations.

Royal Canton has also recently revamped their dim sum menu, with new additions such as XO sauce chives and prawns dumpling and scallion pancake. Dim sum is available daily (from 12pm on weekdays and 10.30am on weekends). See here for our previous review.

Ben's Independent Grocer, DC Mall: What to Eat Here

Last week, we visited Ben's Independent Grocer in DC Mall and ended up having both lunch and dinner here. Within the supermarket, there are several food outlets such as The Grocer's Kitchen, Shucked (oyster bar), Crumbs (bakery), Independent Coffee, Taps Beer Bar, Tsukijiya and I Love Pho Express.

The Grocer's Kitchen offers pizza, salads, steaks, pasta and more. A new addition to the Grocer's Kitchen is La Taqueria, which serves authentic Mexican food such as tacos, burritos, rice bowl and salad bowl. For the filling, you can choose from beef, chicken, fish and vege. Place your order at the counter and you will be given a number, the food will be served to you when it's ready.

Hubby had the fish tacos (RM23) and each serving came with two tacos, loaded with deep fried fish goujons, fresh tomato salsa and guacamole on the side.  Hubby enjoyed it thoroughly.

Meanwhile, I had the sliced rare beef pho (RM19.90) from I Love Pho, which originates from Melbourne. Place your order and you will be given one of those UFO buzzers, which will vibrate when your order is ready for collection.  The broth was light and flavorful, however I found the beef to be overcooked. Nevertheless, still enjoyable though there is definitely room for improvement here.

We returned here for dinner after our spa session at Sofitel. Tsukijiya is owned by Sushi Train which owns Ichiro, Sushi Shoya, Hanaya etc which all serve fantastic Japanese food, so I definitely had high hopes. Other than pre-made sushi, they also serve hot food such as chicken katsu with curry and ramen.

Initially we planned to try the Bara Chirashi, but ended up with Salmon Set (RM36.80) which comes with three thick slices of salmon sashimi, salmon belly, ikura and salmon sushi. The sushi here is made using Japanese rice and made in-house daily, so even though it's pre-made and sold in a packet, I found it just as good as the ones we usually have at Sushi Shoya. Delicious!
