Senya Dining, Isetan, Suria KLCC

If you're looking for a cheap Japanese restaurant to dine at in Suria KLCC, try Senya Dining located inside Isetan Supermarket. We came here one evening for dinner and had a good meal here.

They have 39 items on the menu, ranging from udon, sushi, sashimi, rice bowls, salads and more, all affordably priced. Before entering the restaurant, you need to place your order and pay at the cashier. You will then be given a number, and led to your table. Food will be served to your table when ready. The restaurant can get extremely busy as there are limited seats.

Being salmon sashimi lovers, we ordered the salmon don (RM19) and salmon ebiko don (RM19). Both came with a bowl of miso soup each. The salmon sashimi was fresh, about 5-6 slices per bowl. Hubby's salmon don came with ikura, while mine came with copious amount of ebiko. We enjoyed it.

Price: Total bill RM40.30.

Location: Senya Dining, Isetan KLCC (supermarket), Lower Ground Floor, Suria KLCC, KLCC 50088 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Mama San KL, Suria KLCC, Kuala Lumpur

After my birthday month ended, we took a short break and then it's Hubby's turn to celebrate his birthday (month). We kickstarted the celebration with a spa session at Mandarin Oriental KL (which I will blog about later) - followed by lunch at Mama San KL.

Mama San is one of award-winning Chef Will Meyrick's restaurants; its first restaurant is located in Bali, and now, they have outlets in Hong Kong and Malaysia as well. Mama San KL is located in Suria KLCC and what you get here is Asian street food in a refined setting.  The menu showcases Chinese, Indonesian, Indian, Malay, Singaporean, Thai, Cambodian and Vietnamese cuisine. Some of the dishes you may find here include Peking duck, phad thai, pho bo, udang asam tumis, massaman curry chicken and more.

The restaurant interior is influenced by the colonial times in Shanghai during the 1920s. The walls are graced with a travelogue of old style photographs and retro-inspired mural wallpaper.

With every order of a main course, you would get a signature lychee tiffin punch (usually RM28) for free, thanks to a promotion they are running with CIMB credit card. Served in a small, adorable 2-layered tiffin carrier, this cocktail was pretty potent and contains vodka, lychee, strawberry, mint, vanilla, orange, lemon and lime.

We ordered two dishes to share - the wood roasted Balinese-style barramundi (RM60) as well as the Thai style wood roasted rib eye (RM70). We loved the barramundi, which was coated in a delicious marinade, wrapped in banana leaf and then roasted and served with 3 dips, including sambal matah  as well as a bowl of plecing kangkung. The spice level was just nice and the fish was beautifully cooked so we really enjoyed this.  The rib eye has also been marinated and then oven roasted to our preferred doneness, and served with some raw vegetables and nahm jihm jauw sauce. It would have been better if the beef was slightly more tender. Overall, the portions are generous and are good for sharing.

Dolly Dim Sum + Fresca Mexican Restaurant, Avenue K, KL

Last weekend, we were at Petrosains to attend the preview screening of Miles from Tomorrowland, a new kids series on Disney Junior channel. After the preview, we headed back to Avenue K for a late lunch with the kids. Our original plan was to have dim sum at Dolly Dim Sum, however since the restaurant allows cross-ordering from its sister Mexican restaurant, Fresca, we decided to order from both. An East meets West lunch. :)

You can sit at either one of the restaurant, and still enjoy the other's menu. Our order from Fresca Mexican Restaurant arrived first - the Ensenada-style Fish Tacos (RM22) and Enchiladas Verdes (RM17). We enjoyed the former, a dish originating from Ensenada, Baja California - soft flour tortillas layered with crispy beer battered fish and homemade coleslaw. The Enchiladas Verde was not too bad either, corn tortillas stuffed with shredded chicken in a salsa verde and gratin-cheese finish. On Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays, they also do a Mexican brunch from 11am to 4pm. There is also a Fresca restaurant in The Gardens Mall.

Although pork-free, Dolly Dim Sum certainly impresses with its dim sum, made with finesse. The "Siew Mai" dumpling (RM9.50) is made using tender chicken, fresh prawns and mushrooms, and topped with ebikko. The Roasted BBQ Bun (RM8.50) is filled with Dolly's signature honey BBQ meat filling. One of my favorites was the crystal prawn dumpling (RM9.20); the dumpling skin was so thin, translucent and delicate, truly masterful. Filled with prawn and chives.

From the fried dim sum, we tried the salad prawn dumpling (RM9.50), and the first bite further affirms that Dolly's excellence in dim sum making. Crispy exterior and plump, juicy prawns. And for dessert, we had the egg custard bun (RM7.50), with oozy, flowing salted egg yolk caramel - one not to be missed. We also had the baked mini egg tart (RM8), which features nice and flaky pastry.

Yuzu Japanese Restaurant, Suria KLCC, Kuala Lumpur

We wanted to grab a quick lunch after running some errands at Suria KLCC, and opted for the set lunches at Yuzu Japanese Restaurant. Yuzu has two outlets, one in KLCC and the other at The Gardens Mall. The set lunches here range from RM28-RM54.

I ordered the Sushi and Soba Set (RM30), which came with 5 pieces of assorted sushi, 2 types of cold noodle, appetizer, salad, and teapot soup. I like how this set was presented, especially the soba noodles hung from a chopstick. The cha soba unfortunately was a tad overcooked and was slightly too soft for my liking. This is a pretty filling set, since there is quite a lot of noodles.

Hubby ordered the Unagi Bento (RM54), which came with BBQ Japanese eel with teriyaki sauce, sashimi, tempura, salad, rice, chawanmushi and miso soup. The unagi was tasty, however the portion is really small (half of the what's illustrated in the menu). Everything else in this bento box was competently prepared, and the salmon sashimi was fresh and thickly cut.

We ordered 2 cups of green tea, and the server asked if we wanted a teapot to share. They brought us a pot of genmaicha (which I am not too keen on) and they charged us RM11 for this tea. What a ripoff.

Harrods Cafe & Ben's by BIG @ Suria KLCC, KL

Last month, one of my blogger friends Jessie of Jessie-CookingMoments was in town so we had a mini gathering at Harrods Cafe in Suria KLCC. Joining us was another good blogger friend of ours, Sonia of Nasilemaklover. I had a really fantastic time catching up with them and we even got to take a photo with former Malaysia's fourth Prime Minister, YAB Tun Dr. Mahathir.

Tea and desserts at Harrods Cafe

We first had some tea and desserts at Harrods Cafe, which is located on ground level next to Isetan. Not to be confused with the tea salon on the 1st floor next to their signature shop. Harrods Cafe, a street level alfresco cafe is casual and relaxed. Cakes are displayed at the glass counter at the front - after browsing, we went for the lemon meringue pie and cream puff. They also serve Harrods' signature salt beef sandwich here. Service here is friendly.

After desserts, we were ready for lunch (yes, that's how we roll - desserts first:P) so we headed over to Ben's for a quick bite. Coincidentally, my kids + their grandparents also went to Ben's for lunch - they had Ben's Cheesburger and Fish & Chips. We went for Ben's House Salad (RM16), a pretty nice salad with edamame, 7 seeds, avocado, and house dressing. I enjoyed eating this. The duck confit spaghettini (RM26) with sun dried tomatoes was also good - duck was crispy and pasta was nicely cooked. Although restaurant was very busy, service was good and quick.
