How to Throw a Boba Themed Birthday Party (Boba Cake Recipe Included!)

How time flies! I am now a mom to a teenager. Last week, we threw a Boba themed birthday party for my daughter to celebrate. Hubby went into full craft mode again and made boba-related decorations while I was in charge of the boba birthday cake. On the day, we also decided to set it up outdoors Γ  la garden party setting.

This is a simple, naked Boba Cake with stabilized whipping cream and store-bought Boba pearls. Please stabilize your cream if you are planning to leave it at room temperature / outdoors for more than 15 minutes (as Malaysia's humid weather makes regular whipped cream melt very quickly).

Boba Cake
Recipe by Baby Sumo
Preparation time: 30-45 minutes
Cooking time: 20-25minutes
Makes 1 cake

Ingredients
165g salted butter
165g caster sugar
3 eggs
165g self raising flour
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract or vanilla bean paste
1 1/2 tsp milk

For the whipped cream
120ml whipping cream
1 1/2 tbsp icing sugar
1/2 tsp gelatin
1 tbsp water

For decorating
Boba pearls (recipe here), or buy from the nearest boba shop, drained

1. Preheat oven to 190C (no fan).

2. Grease three 4-inch cake tins and line the base with greaseproof paper.

3. Using an electric mixer, cream the butter and sugar together until you get a pale, fluffy mixture . This will take about 4-5 minutes. Add the egg one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add the vanilla extract.

4. Sift the flour and baking powder, then fold into the mixture. Repeat until all the flour is incorporated. The mixture should fall off a spoon easily, add some milk if necessary.

5. Divide the mixture between the three tins, then place in the preheated oven and bake for 20 minutes, or until a skewer inserted in the centre comes out clean.

6. Allow to cool for 5 minutes, then turn onto a wire rack to cool completely. Peel off the base papers.

7. Place mixing bowl and whisk in fridge for 10 minutes before you begin to make the stabilized whipped cream. Meanwhile, soak the gelatin with water in a bowl for 2 minutes, then mix well until dissolved. You can place it over a hot water bath to help dissolve it.

8.Pour whipping cream into mixing bowl and whisk over high speed for 20 seconds. Add icing sugar and whisk until soft peaks. Take 1 spoonful of cream and add to gelatin and mix well. Add gelatin mixture to the rest of the cream and whisk until stiff peaks. Chill in fridge until required.

9. Stack the cakes on top of each other. Carefully pierce a straw through the cakes (this will help hold the cakes together too). Dollop the stabilized cream onto the top of the cake, and carefully arrange the boba pearls on top. You can also add more pearls at the base of the cake.

Nando's, Union Square, Aberdeen

For Baby D's birthday celebration in Scotland, we checked out Nando's as per the birthday boy's request. In Aberdeen, there are two Nando's - located in The Academy in Belmont Street and Union Square. We visited the latter; the restaurant was absolutely heaving and we had to wait about 20 minutes for a table.

Once seated, we browsed the menu and waited for someone to take our order. Later we found out that Nando's UK operate a semi self-service system (order and pay at the counter and food will be served to your table) .... a boo-boo on our part as in Malaysia we get full table service.

The kids got an activity sheet each to keep them entertained while waiting for the food to arrive. Before long, our appetizers arrived - we ordered the 3 Chicken Wings, Red pepper dip served with warm pita strips and Halloumi sticks. Everything was very tasty, we especially enjoyed the chicken wings which were moist and flavorful (we went for medium flavour and it was just nice for us in terms of spiciness). The halloumi sticks came with an addictive chilli jam dip. They're £3.70 each or you can order three starters for £9.95.

It would be a crime to come to Nando's and not have their flame-grilled Peri-Peri chicken. The chicken is marinated for at least 24 hours, for all the flavours to lock in. As it is flame-grilled, you can taste the smokiness and slight char it gives to the chicken. We ordered two 1/2 chickens (with 2 regular sides £10.95)  - one medium and another with lemon and herb (for the kids). The kids ended up eating our medium sauce one, as the lemon and herb was too mild for their liking. LOL! The chicken leg part is definitely the best as it's moist and juicy.

We also ordered a Sunset Burger (with 2 regular sides £11.45) to share - two grilled chicken thighs sandwiched between melting Cheddar cheese, smoky red pepper chutney, baby spinach and a soft bun. Fantastic burger, I have to say!

Sides are very nicely done - we tried the chips (crisp and fluffy), corn on the cob, garlic bread, side salad and Supergrain salad. The latter which came with quinoa, kale, edamame and beans with an avocado & buttermilk dressing was surprisingly very good - healthy and delicious, WIN!

For the full menu, click here.

Opening times: Sun - Thurs 11am - 10pm; Fri-Sat 11am - 10.30pm.

Price: Total bill £51.40.

Location: Nando's, Union Square, Aberdeen, Scotland, AB11 5RG, United Kingdom.

Tel: 01224 581 959

A Very Happy Bird-Day Celebration!

For his birthday dinner this year, Hubby requested for roast chicken ... and in our home, ask nicely and you shall receive. :)

We bought a LightBox when we were vacationing in Scotland, and it always makes an appearance during special occasions. We were brainstorming with the kids on the way back to school on what to put on it this time, and agreed upon "Happy Bird-Day" (chicken, bird.. get it?)

This 2.1kg chicken was roasted for about 1 1/2 hours. It was absolutely gorgeous- moist with crispy skin. For those interested to make this, you'd be happy to learn that this roast chicken is super simple, requiring only chicken, salt and freshly ground pepper. I added rosemary and lemon in the cavity, but this is optional. You can find the recipe here.

For his bird-day cake, I made a Coconut Butter Cake with Creme Chantilly as it's one of Hubby's favorite cakes. For the decoration, I used 4 x Green Tea Kit Kats and created a heart shape and filled it with fresh blueberries. Then, I added fresh rosemary all around the edges of the cake to make it look like a "bird's nest".

Happy birthday again, Hubby! Hope you enjoyed your bird-day celebration :)

Super Big Don Houseε€§ηˆ†δΈΌ, Damansara Uptown

*Super Big Don House has closed down.

Seeing how much I love Japanese don, our friend took us to Damansara Uptown to check out Super Big Don House ε€§ηˆ†δΈΌ. As their name suggests, their menu is predominantly rice bowls (don) with various toppings such as raw seafood, beef, pork and more.

My favorite kind of don is one with raw seafood. You can choose from salmon, tuna chutoro, scallop, Hokkaido uni, and even lobster. I went for the Salmon Negitoro Tobiko Don (RM39) which comes with four types of seafood - salmon sashimi, negitoro, kani and tobiko.  The salmon sashimi was sliced fairly thickly, and was fresh and quite fatty, which I loveeeeee. Next to the sashimi are tobiko which adds a lovely texture to the rice bowl and shredded kani (crabstick) as well as pickles and cucumber. Finally, a large mound of negitoro, (which is chopped or blended fatty toro (tuna belly)) tops the rice bowl.

You can add on premium items to your rice bowl such as lobster (500g for RM48) and Hokkaido uni (RM50)

Delicious slices of salmon sashimi

As each rice bowl is served, the wait staff will explain to you how to best enjoy it. For mine, I was to first move the sashimi to a small side plate (to be eaten with wasabi and soy later). Then, I was to drizzle the rice with ample amounts of seafood soy sauce (blended in-house) and then mix it all up. I thoroughly enjoyed my rice bowl; the toppings were generous and most importantly fresh. All dons come with a bowl of miso soup.

Unagi lovers, I highly recommend the unagi don here (RM68). Hubby had this and was well-impressed with the thick, meaty slices of grilled eel in a sweet glaze. I usually avoid unagi as I find that they usually contain quite a lot of small bones but definitely no such problem here. I enjoyed the piece that I had. Again, portion is generous. For this, Hubby was instructed to remove the unagi to the side plate and mix in the egg yolk with the rice.

Our friend was intrigued by the pork don (RM48) which is depicted in the menu as a whole load of meat on a skewer, served standing upright in the rice bowl. Looks pretty cool (beef one is also served in the same manner) so she ordered this. The pork was a little dry on its own, but it does come with some garlicky sauce on the side. There was a whopping 400g of meat, so portions here are definitely big. Personally I prefer the seafood don over this.

Haha the actual item looks even more impressive!

Other than rice bowls, they also offer a few types of kushiage aka deep fried Japanese skewers. Our friend had this the last time and raved about the black truffle mayonnaise. There is a minimum order of 2 skewers, so we had the pork belly (RM6.90) and vertebral mushroom (RM3.90). I loved the mushroom skewer with the truffle mayo... so good!

Opening times: Lunch 12.00pm - 3.30pm; Dinner 6.00pm - 10.30pm.

Price: Total bill RM199.15 (all prices denoted above are prices before service charge and GST)

Location: 75, Ground Floor, Jalan SS21/1A, Damansara Utama, 47400 Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia. (Street parking available or park at The Starling and walk over).

Tel: 03-7733 5996
