Christine's Bakery, Sunway Geo: New Menu 2020

Since its inception in 2017, Christine's Bakery, located in Sunway Geo, has made a name for itself and is now touted as the place to visit for delicious high-quality hand-rolled bagels and pastries. The inviting smell of freshly baked bread greeted us as we stepped inside this cosy bakery-cum-cafe. Rows of pastries and cakes, baked in-house daily, all seem to be calling out my name.

Christine's Bakery

Christine's Bakery is best known for its bagel sandwiches with exciting fillings. They are passionate about what they do, so everything is baked daily using the finest ingredients, and without added preservatives and MSG, to ensure freshness of the product. Earlier this month, they launched a new menu, offering exciting new sandwich fillings as well as more varieties of bread such as homemade croissant and sourdough to pair with the fillings.

Our personal favourite here is the Texas Burger (RM32.80), which we paired with the original hand-rolled bagel. A new addition to the menu, the bagel is lightly toasted and layered with an amazingly juicy burger patty (made from 85% USA Angus cornfed beef and 15% Japanese Wagyu fat), crunchy tempura onion rings, caramelised onion, cheddar cheese, and smoky BBQ aioli. Now, this is what I call a burger! And I can certainly see what the rage about the bagels are all about...absolutely top-notch.

A meat lover's dream, the Wagyu Steak Out (RM36.80) is a must-try! A 100g Wagyu steak, perfectly cooked to medium rare doneness, is complimented beautifully with mozzarella cheese, mustard BBQ sauce, pickled cabbage, caramelised onions, roasted tomato and garden greens. This time, we had it with the sourdough bread, which was excellent too.

So far so good, we're loving the well-thought out fillings for these sandwiches. Next, we also went for the classic bagel filling of salmon and cream cheese-  the Surf (RM25.80). We chose the Sea Salt hand-rolled bagel (other bagel choices include seeded, pumpkin, cheese and walnut) for this sandwich. You get generous amounts of homecured salmon slices, cucumber cream cheese, roasted tomato, capers, red onion and garden greens.

Another new item on the menu is the Truffle Unagi (RM32.80), which we paired with another newbie, the homemade croissant. The croissant was the star here with all the beautiful flaky layers. This is similar to an unagi bowl, but in sandwich form - with truffle-infused Japanese unagi kabayaki, cucumber cream cheese and omelette.

Do leave some room for desserts - there are pastries, tarts, cakes, and more. We highly recommend the signature Portuguese egg tarts (RM3.40), with its crisp buttery crust and creamy custard centre. We also loved the luscious Salted Caramel Mille Crepe (RM13.90) and the Strawberry Tart which reminds us of our summer days in Scotland.

Parisian Afternoon Tea: Betjeman & Barton, Pavilion KL

Afternoon tea is a time-honoured tradition whereby sandwiches, scones and pastries are enjoyed over a pot of tea. Betjeman and Barton, the purveyors of fine, French tea recently opened their doors at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur and has introduced an innovative concept of "all-day afternoon tea" for lovers of this laid back indulgence. This concept is perfect for accommodating the busy lifestyle of KL-ites who seek to be spontaneous and enjoy afternoon tea, anytime of the day.

Bright and airy, Betjeman and Barton in Pavilion is located at Fashion Avenue and operate an open-concept tearoom, which gives the feeling of spaciousness while still offering privacy to guests. The decor is tasteful, with pastel colour schemes, exuding a chic ambiance for the afternoon tea session.

Betjeman and Barton Malaysia offers over 80 types of tea, both premium and superior, all air-flown in from France. Once seated, one of the staff would bring a tray filled with glass domes of tea leaves and bring the guests on a crash course on tea appreciation. We were invited to smell each tea, including black, green, red, white and herbal teas, and find the tea best suited to our taste.

Each Traditional Afternoon Tea set comes with free flow of selected tea, warm scones, made-to-order finger sandwiches and pastries. For April, they are currently a special price of RM55 per person with Betjeman's premium loose tea or RM59 per person with Betjeman's superior loose tea. There is also a Gelato Afternoon Tea with three scoops of gelato for RM79 per person and Grand Chocolate Afternoon Tea with six pieces of Betjeman's finest chocolates for RM89 per person. They also offer a Children's Afternoon Tea for 4-10 year olds, which comes with milk or hot chocolate at RM39 per child.

I selected the Hanami, a delicate black tea from China blended with tiare flowers, heliotrope. I was especially drawn to the floral, fruity aroma. Hubby, being a creature of habit, stuck to his usual Lapsang Souchong, which has a smoky aroma, as the tea leaves are smoked over pinewood fire. Tea is served in Noritake pretty pastel pink teapot and teacups. Do note that there is a 90-minute refill policy for the tea.

Served in an elegant three tier set, we started with the sandwiches, which included Betjeman's smoked salmon with cream cheese, Egg mayonnaise with chopped chives, Chicken ham with sweet mustard and Cucumber with lemon butter, all competently made and delicious. Similarly, the warm scones were delicious - tender and crumbly on the inside and a delightful golden crust. Best of all, they are served with Devonshire clotted cream and strawberry preserve, exactly the way it should be :)

For the sweets, there was a French violette tart, opera cake, lemon cheese, coconut mango tart and Betjeman's blueberry macaron. Overall, a very enjoyable afternoon tea experience with good service and lovely ambiance.

Opening times: 10am to 10pm daily.

Location: Betjeman and Barton, P3.01.03, Level 3, Fashion Avenue, Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, No.168, Jalan Bukit Bintang, 55100 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The World is Flat at The Bee, Publika, KL: Pizza, Sandwiches and Light Bites

The Bee at Publika is a well-known venue for music, comedy shows and events. Last year, The World is Flat took over the kitchen at The Bee, churning out innovative pizzas, sandwiches and other brunch items. This is the first overseas venture by the people who oversee a myriad of food concepts in Singapore, including Standing Sushi Bar, Tanuki Raw, Sumo Bar Happy and more.

The Bee offers both an al fresco dining area as well an indoor air-conditioned section. I don't usually do al fresco dining but the ambiance here was too nice to resist, with its vibrant mural and lush green plants. Great vibes and so Instagram-worthy too!

The food menu is available all day, from 11am to 11pm and feature nine types of thin crust and deep dish pizzas, pasta, sandwiches and snacks, with great punny names such as "Nacho Average Chips" and "Spam Wham!"

Snack away while you catch up with friends - we highly recommend the Truffle Fries (RM19) or awesome Curry Popcorn Shrimp (RM29); both great paired with a cold beer.

Instead of regular potato fries, the Truffle Fries are made using sweet potato, fried and then tossed in white truffle oil. Don't forget to eat it dipped in the truffle aioli... so yum!

Undoubtedly our favorite here, the fried lightly battered popcorn shrimp served with a beer cheese dip went down a treat. Crisp and absolutely addictive, we especially loved the curry spices coating the shrimp.

For those who love salted egg (who doesn't?), you'd be happy to find that the menu features quite a few salted egg items. We selected the Salted Egg Fried Chicken sandwich (RM30); one loaded sandwich with crispy herb fried chicken, honey butter, burnt onions, mozzarella and cheddar. We would have loved more of the salted duck egg sauce to make the taste more prevalent though overall, we enjoyed this - messy but sinfully good!

There is also a small brunch menu available (think eggs benedict, croque madame, beef hash, at RM27 each). We had the Pancakes, which comes with 3 large-ish, fluffy pancakes, served with sliced bananas, whipped butter and scrambled eggs. BabySumoKids enjoyed the pancakes, drizzled with lots of syrup and smeared with lots of butter.

Since The World is Flat is essentially known for their pizzas, we ordered both the Black Gold (RM25 for personal) and Fat Samurai (RM30 for personal). They also do a 12" version of all the pizzas. My vote goes to the Black Gold, a thin, charcoal crust pizza topped with crispy squid, seasoned fried prawns, burnt onion, portobello mushroom, salted egg sauce and three types of cheese. The pizza crust was light and the whole combination worked for me. I didnt quite enjoy the Fat Samurai as I found the flavours to be overbusy, but I think those who like okonomiyaki  may appreciate this.

Super Saigon Pho Cafe @ TTDI, KL

One of our favorite cuisine is Vietnamese as it is fresh, delicious and healthy.

Last week, we checked out Super Saigon Pho Cafe in TTDI and there is just so much to love about the place - the amazing decor, the delicious food and great coffee. Expect to find authentic Vietnamese dishes on the menu, inspired by Melbourne's popular Vietnamese eateries.

Super Saigon uses fresh ingredients such as premium cuts of imported Australian beef, chicken, fresh herbs and aromatic ingredients to ensure every dish is executed well. Using only HALAL Certified products and suppliers, Super Saigon focuses on being the first HALAL Vietnamese restaurant in Kuala Lumpur.

Flatlay, on a beautiful bespoke marble table

The interior of the restaurant takes inspiration from the colours of Asia and Mykonos, Greece. Step inside and you will find many gorgeous Instagrammable corners such as beautiful porcelain plates on the white walls, bright blue and gold accents and bespoke marble tables.

Vietnamese low tables, for those who want to dine like locals

To start, we highly recommend the Vietnamese Drip Coffee (RM7.90); it's wonderfully fragrant, with a lovely hazelnut finish. If you want something caffeine-free, go for the creamy Avocado Smoothie, a steal at RM9.90 or one of the premium teas.

The coffee filter and coffee beans are available for sale at Super Saigon; Hubby has been enjoying a daily cuppa at home. Check out this video we made about Vietnamese Drip Coffee.

Goi cuon is our favorite Vietnamese appetizer and Super Saigon aces it with their Fresh Rice Paper Roll wrapped with chicken and prawn (RM9.90 for 2 pcs).  These fresh rolls are served with a lovely peanut sauce.

Our must-orders at a Vietnamese restaurant are always pho and banh mi. Serving Melbourne-style pho, diners can choose from beef, chicken or vegetarian as well as variety of meat cuts. Go all out and order the Special Beef Combination (RM19.90), an impressive bowl of pho with medium rare sliced beef, beef brisket, beef tendon, beef tripe and beef balls with beansprouts and Thai basil on the side. The soup was light and flavourful, and I could tell that Baby D enjoyed it because after five minutes of eating, he handed back an empty bowl to me and asked for a refill. If the beef slices were more tender, this would have been perfect.

A big hit with kids - soft boiled kampung egg (RM3) which comes with chicken broth.

What makes a good banh mi? For us, it's a combination of good, crusty baguette and ample fresh fillings. Super Saigon's Mixed Cold Cuts Banh Mi (RM12.90) ticked all the right boxes, loaded with chicken liver pate, shredded carrots and cucumber, spring onions, coriander, egg mayo and red chilli pepper. We'd definitely order this again.

Other than pho and banh mi, Super Saigon also offers broken rice and bun cha. We had the latter, with Sauteed sliced beef with onions and Crispy spring roll (RM18.90). The portion was extremely generous; flavorful, tender beef crowned the vermicelli and mixed salad leaves and pickled vegetables. We enjoyed the spring rolls too; served piping hot and crispy.

For dessert, we had the Flan with palm sugar caramel (RM5.90)... wobbly, creamy goodness. A delightfully sweet end to our meal.
