The Dark Horse: New Sports Bar in KL

The Dark Horse is a swanky new sports bar located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, within walking distance from KLCC, Bukit Bintang and KL Tower. Only a few months into operation, this outlet has been extremely well-received by locals and expats alike. And it's easy to see why: the interior is tasteful yet cosy, with great tasting food and wonderfully warm, friendly service.

The Dark Horse KL

There was a real buzz to the place when we visited on a Thursday afternoon. We were promptly seated and menus were handed out as we took in the lively surrounding. There are different seating areas to suit your preference; low tables and booths for comfortable dining, high tables for socializing and drinking, and the balcony area for people watching and al fresco dining. Other than that, you can also play a game of darts, foosball or even pool with your mates as well as catch a full range of different sports channels on the multiple televisions available here. In the evenings, there is also live music from 7.30pm onwards, which will set the mood for your night out.

The food variety is typical of what is usually served in a gastropub; here at The Dark Horse, the food is done extremely well, generously portioned and absolutely delicious. We were thoroughly impressed with everything which we ordered off their a la carte and snack menu. Choose from salads, soups, burgers, sandwiches, mains, steaks and desserts. Here are some the dishes which we had and loved:

Triple Cheeseburger (RM35) - quarter pounder Australian beef patty, cheddar cheese skirt, lettuce, tomato, gherkin, sweet relish, and comes with coleslaw and your choice of potato (we went for the sweet potato fries).  Glorious, juicy burger.. my son devoured it all!

100% certified Argentinian Grain Fed Black Angus ribeye steak (RM129 for 250g), served with a side salad, potato and sauce of your choice. Succulent, tender, cooked to medium rare perfection, immensely satisfying!

Classic mushroom soup (RM19). Domed with puff pastry, the soup was delightfully creamy and earthy... exactly how a good mushroom soup should be.

The Dark Horse KL

Buffalo chicken wings (RM22). I love wings, and these were fine wings. Crispy and juicy, with a delectable sauce... finger licking good, for sure.  They also do other flavours such as hoisin sriracha, Jamaican jerk, barbecue, mango habanero and five spice peanut butter.

Chicken Quesadillas with guacamole and sour cream (RM20). Deliciously cheesy.

We also ordered four desserts; well, as my son always says, "There's always room for dessert. Dessert doesn't go to the stomach, it goes to the heart". My favourite was the rich and lusciously creamy Creme brulee (RM18), followed closely by the warm Apple crumble with vanilla ice cream (RM22), Chocolate lava cake (RM20) and Berry panna cotta (RM19).

They also offer an affordable lunch menu at RM37++, which includes a starter, mains, sides and dessert. If you're looking for a challenge, take on the Mount Kinabalu Burger, a whopper of a burger with 10 quarterpound Australian beef patties, 10 Cheddar cheese slices and all the extras; conquer this within 30 minutes and get it for free!

There are four beers on tap, not your usual brews, including Stella Artois, Connors Stout, Hoegarden Blanc, and Blackthorne Cider. You will also find an extensive selection of wine, spirits, beers and ciders, cocktails, shots, mojtos and more. Unlike other sports bar or pubs, Ladies Night is not just once, but four times a week, with complimentary drinks all night long for ladies (this month, it's every Monday to Thursday, with 100% free Passion Fruit Margaritas).

Concubine KL: Restaurant & Bar in Chinatown

Kuala Lumpur's Chinatown has recently undergone a revival, much to the delight of KL-ites. The rebirth of Kwai Chai Hong in the heart of Chinatown brings new restaurants, bars and cafes as well as interactive murals for us to explore in the area.

Flirtatious and funky while keeping up with Chinatown’s heritage, Concubine KL is a new restaurant and bar inspired by the events that took place within its walls. The tasteful interior, red lanterns and striking murals on the walls set the right mood for this restaurant and bar that wishes to portray its namesake as the independent woman that she is.

The kitchen here at Concubine KL is helmed by mixologist-turned-chef, Danny Winter who introduces an Asian slant into Western favourites and vice versa. Creative cocktails showcasing local ingredients such as chrysanthemum, hibiscus, asam keping, bunga kantan , duku langsat, nutmeg and jackfruit also takes the spotlight here.

On the food menu, you will find light bites such as tostada, dumplings, skewers as well as grilled mains and salads. Start with the Keropok nachos (RM15) - instead of tortilla chips, crispy fish crackers (aka keropok) is topped with sambal balado and sambal hijau, pink pickled onion, jalapeno, tempeh, coriander and ikan bilis. Crunchy, slightly spicy, definitely addictive.

The Tuna tostada (RM22) was my personal favourite. A burst of wonderful, fresh flavours - chopped raw tuna dressed with yuzu and ponzu, and tossed with shiso, avocado, sesame, cucumber and crispy garlic are topped on a crisp deep fried mini tortilla.

So you think you're having gyozas, but when you pop one into your mouth, it's cheese burger you taste! That's exactly how we felt when we had the dbl cheese burger gyoza (RM18) at Concubine KL. The gyoza dumplings are filled with beef, and then topped with sharp cheddar, cheese sauce, onion and mustard, with pickles on the side - for that unmistakable cheese burger flavour.

Charred lettuce (RM22) -gem lettuce are charred over the grill and topped with bonito flakes and tobiko sauce for that umami kick.

The Green tea smoked lamb rack (RM38) was another winner - smoked with green tea, the tender meat, sprinkled with ras el hanout, a Morrocan mix spice blend, was flavourful and juicy and paired beautifully with the miso aubergine.

Cocktails - Yuzu Spritz, a refreshing creation using gin, yuzu, fresh lemon juice and finished with a fresh kaffir lime leaf. The Hibiscus, an elegant drink using hibiscus infused tequila, lime juice, agave syrup, aperol and egg white.

SkyBar at Traders Hotel, Kuala Lumpur: Best Rooftop Bar in KL!

"You haven't been to Kuala Lumpur unless you've been to SkyBar." Word.

Whenever we have overseas friends visiting Malaysia for the first time and they ask us what's the place they MUST visit when they're in KL for the best views of the Petronas Twin Towers, we would always recommend SkyBar Kuala Lumpur.

Located on Level 33 of Traders Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, Sky Bar is a fantastic place to visit, be it night or day. Grab a seat in one of the cosy cabanas and enjoy a light bite or cocktail while enjoying the amazing, unobstructed views of the iconic towers.

Come here for this view.. second to none

Wine, champagne, rosé, sparkling wine, whisky, beer, cocktails, champagne cocktails.. take your pick from the impressive range of drinks here. Try the signature cocktails; my personal favorite is the Lychee Rose (RM43) - pretty in pink, girly and deliciously sweet :)

Cosmopolitan (RM43) - Belvedere vodka, fresh lime, cranberry juice

Long Island Tea (RM48) - Belvedere vodka / bacardi superior / tanqueray gin jose cuervo tequila / orange juice. Ultimate Mojito (RM40) - matusalem anejo rum / lime wedges / raw sugar / mint

From 6pm onwards, they serve light bites and tapas such as nachos, calamari, spicy buffalo chicken wings, tacos and pizza. We visited SkyBar at lunchtime, so we ordered from their room service menu instead.

In the UK, haddock and cod are commonly used for Fish & Chips, so we were pleasantly surprised to see that Traders Hotel KL use cod fish in their Fish & Chips (RM49) dish -it makes such a big difference when proper fish is used, instead of tilapia or dory which so many KL restaurants use. We also had the Classic Beef Burger (RM49) - 220g Australian ground beef, cheedar cheese, gherkin, onion rings, French fries, coleslaw. A lovely, juicy burger. Messy to eat but so very nice.

Please note: After 7pm, guests must be at least 21 years old to enter.

Opening times: 10am - 1am (Mon - Thu & Sun); 10am - 3am (Fri, Sat & eve of Public Holidays)
