CNY 2020: Wan Chun Ting, Sofitel Kuala Lumpur Damansara

Usher in the Year of the Rat and celebrate new beginnings at the sophisticated Wan Chun Ting, Sofitel Kuala Lumpur's fine dining Chinese restaurant. This Chinese New Year, guests will feel the prosperity in the air and their bellies as Wan Chun Ting Restaurant introduces its selection of specially-curated Lunar New Year menus for a delightful reunion with family, friends and business partners.

Select from three specially-curated 9-course Lunar New Year menus, available from 26 December 2019 until 8 February 2020, featuring auspicious dishes like Double boiled chicken soup with Chinese yam, red mushroom and sea cucumber, Wok-fried fresh tiger prawn with shredded egg, Lotus leaf fried rice with waxed meat, Deep-fried Chinese New Year cake with yam, just to name a few. The set menus include Prosperous (RM2,388), Fortune (RM2,688) and Wealth Set Menu (RM2,888) per table of ten persons and is inclusive of a bottle of wine. Scroll down to the end of the post for the full menus.

Guests seeking an a-la-carte dining experience can savor Chef Leong’s Lunar New Year recommendations which include Boneless chicken with Chinese herbs, Steamed scallops with homemade bean curd, egg white and Chinese wine, Steamed prawns with garlic egg white and Chinese wine, Roasted baby spring chicken served with prawn crackers and more. There is also a selection of delicate dim sum available for lunch, ideal for gatherings with family, loved ones and colleagues.

Start your meal with the Yee Sang toss, aka Lo Hei wth one of their Yee Sang selections, such as Vegetarian Yee Sang, Jelly Fish Yee Sang, Norwegian salmon Yee Sang, Deep fried soft shell crab Yee Sang, 2 Head Abalone Yee Sang, Crispy fish skin Yee Sang and Scallop with Snow Pear Yee Sang. Prices start at RM88 for half portion, RM176 for full portion. We tossed to prosperity and good health with the Scallop with Snow Pear Yee Sang, which is topped with fresh fruits and vegetables, and comes with a unique strawberry sauce.

Next, we had the Double-boiled chicken soup with Chinese yam, red mushroom and sea cucumber.  Mushroom represents longevity while sea cucumber signifies happiness for the new year. We love double boiled Chinese soups - so nourishing and warming!

More scallops? Yes please! After the scallops in our yee sang, we had yet another scallop dish - Stir fried shredded scallop with osmanthus egg and romaine lettuce cups. Scallops represent new horizons opening up for the new year (ie new opportunities, new possibilities).

We all need a little more laughter in our lives... siu ha ha 笑哈哈 with the Deep fried prawns with mayo.

Dried oyster is commonly served during Chinese New Year as its homonym sounds like "hou see" (ie good things). The premium plump dried oyster here is braised and served with broccoli florets. We also had the fragrant Lotus leaf fried rice with waxed meat and topped with toasted pine nuts.

For dessert, we had the Chinese New Year cake (nian gao), sandwiched between sweet potato and yam and deep fried until golden. Lovely, sticky goodness!

  1. It would be easy to make our own yee sang but it is not the usual practice here, don't think it is a Foochow tradition. I sure would not want my dinner table to be all messed up.
