CNY 2020: De.Wan 1958 by Chef Wan

Usually at some point during Chinese New Year, my body craves an alternative to Chinese food. At De.Wan 1958 by Chef Wan, you can still enjoy the fun of tossing Yee Sang and the joys of a CNY celebratory meal with wholesome, delicious Malaysian food.

Welcome the Year of the Rat with one of three set menus, with prices starting from RM1,388++ per table for 8-10 pax. Scroll to the end of the post for the full menus.

Celebrate new beginnings and start your meal with the Yee Sang toss, aka lo hei with Chef Wan's one-of-a-kind Prosperity Yee Sang. This unique yee sang is made up of some of Chef Wan's signature appetizers such as kerabu pucuk paku, cucur udang and otak-otak as well as ulam, radish, pomelo, fried tofu, carrot and rempeyek. Just before tossing, crushed peanuts, special peanut sauce and serunding (beef floss) is added to the Yee Sang.

The combination totally works and it sure was one tasty salad! I also like how they have retained the fish element in the Yee Sang (which translates to fish salad) by using otak-otak, made from mackerel and fresh prawn. You may order the Prosperity Yee Sang at RM68 (4-6pax) or RM128 (10-12 pax) or it also comes as part of the CNY set menus.

We had the RM1388 Chinese New Year Set Menu, which also comes with Ayam satay for starters. Super tender, well-marinated chicken skewers cooked over charcoal embers.

For mains, there will be six sumptuous courses, featuring dishes which hold a symbolic meaning for the Lunar New Year such as fish, prawns, mushrooms and more. This includes the Live silver snapper assam pedas, Daging rendang Selangor, Jumbo sotong bakar with sambal hijau, Sambal petai tiger prawns, Ayam bakar, and Stir Fried Broccoli with Mushrooms, all served with your choice of rice (Nasi telur Terengganu, Nasi minyak bunga telang or Nasi putih).

Live silver snapper assam pedas - Fish is often served during Chinese New Year as they represent abundance for the new year. Silver snapper, also known as ikan jenahak in Malay - it doesn't get any fresher than this as the fish were still swimming in the aquarium in the kitchen just before cooking. One taste of the asam pedas and I'm hooked! Spicy, sweet and tangy, the fish is cooked just right and served with a delicious mouthwatering gravy.

Daging rendang Selangor - superior, absolutely delightful and fork-tender beef rendang made with premium Australian beef cooked in creamy coconut milk, local spices and kerisik.

Jumbo sotong bakar with sambal hijau - fresh jumbo squid grilled over charcoal until tender and served with Chef Wan's homemade green chilli sambal. This also came with a pungent tempoyak cili (fermented durian chilli paste) and sambal kicap pedas (traditional sweet soy sauce with chillies and garlic).

Sambal petai tiger prawns - prawns are often served during Chinese New Year as the word 虾 shares the same homonym as "ha" for laughter. The tiger prawns were huge and fresh, cooked with petai in Chef Wan's special sambal chilli paste.

Ayam bakar - flavorful, moist charcoal grilled chicken with a smoky finish, served with a pineapple percik sauce.

Stir Fried Broccoli with Mushrooms - mushrooms represent longevity, so it's a must have during Chinese New Year.

For a sweet end to your meal, indulge in the Bubur Som Som (a soft rice flour pudding topped with coconut milk and gula melaka) and Fresh tropical fruit platter.

Chef Wan's homemade rempeyek are also for sale, perfect for gifts this CNY. RM20 per bottle or RM50 for 3 bottles. Available at De.Wan 1958 or online at www.dewan.space.
