Delicious Claypot Porridge in Cheras, KL

Rainy evenings are perfect for claypot porridge, the ultimate comfort food for many Asians. At Restaurant Sin Woh Heng in Cheras, they serve smooth, thick porridge with various ingredients such as chicken, pork, eel, frog, fish and lala, which arrives sizzling hot in a claypot.

We love the lean pork porridge (RM7.50) as well as the "sang yu" fish porridge (RM10) here. The amount of pork and fish are pretty generous.  The porridge is smooth and flavorful with hints of ginger. Don't forget to order some Chinese crullers (yau char kwai - RM2) to go with your porridge.

On our second visit, we also ordered the lala in sesame oil and ginger (RM12), which is also cooked and served in a claypot. The lala used here have smaller shells but still meaty and fresh and I loved the gingery sauce it is cooked in. I reckon the sauce would go very well with chicken too... will have to try that next time! Diners can also opt to have their protein of choice cooked kungpo style (it says paprika on the menu but this is what they mean).

For a balanced meal, you can order vegetable dishes (RM5- RM5.50) from the "drinks guy".  The vegetables are simply blanched and served with soy sauce and sesame oil. You choose from choy sum, iceberg lettuce or beansprouts. My favorite is the beansprouts, so crunchy and fat! Delicious :)

Other than porridge, you will also find claypot chicken rice at this kopitiam. The stall is located right at the front. The rice is cooked over charcoal fire, then chicken and Chinese sausage (lap cheong) is added and cooked further to get a nice crust on the bottom. Each portion costs RM8.50 and can easily feed 2 pax.

We usually visit Sin Woh Heng before 6pm as we like having our dinner early but during one of our visits, we got there around 8.30pm and the dim sum stall within the shoplot was open too. This dim sum stall is usually open from 8pm onwards, all the way until mid morning (11am). When we paid, we saw that the dim sum stall is called "Heng Kee Tim Sum" which is the same as the one at Taman Bukit Anggerik.

Here, you can find all sorts of steamed dim sum as well as deep fried items and radish cake which is cooked to order. Prices start from RM3 onwards. We had three items (siew mai, deep fried beancurd roll and fried dumpling) and the total bill came to about RM12.

Opening times: 5.30pm to 10.30pm. Closed on Monday.

Price: RM33.80 for 4 pax for porridge + lala. RM10.50 for vege.

Location: Restoran Sin Woh Heng, 117, Jalan 2, Taman Len Seng, 56000 Cheras, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. (Street parking available)
