Restoran Makanan Laut Kwai Lam, Kg. Subang

Everyone has a favorite restaurant to go to for a certain type of food. So, when we are craving seafood, there is only one place we want to go to - Restoran Makanan Laut Kwai Lam located in Kg. Subang. It is a pretty long drive from Seremban but the drive is well worth it as there is no better place for seafood than this.

We have been frequenting this seafood restaurant for the past 10 years, and it has yet to disappoint us. The seafood is always fresh and very affordable. The restaurant is always packed with customers by 7pm on weekends, so be sure to come early.

Peanuts and chinese crackers to snack on while waiting

The fantastic sauce duo - sambal paste and sour & spicy sauce

A refreshing coconut drink (RM4)

Since we're here for the seafood, not to be missed are the crabs (RM35/kg). We usually order them Kam Hiong style- crabs cooked with chilli, dried prawns, onion, garlics and curry leaves. The dry paste is extremely flavoursome with a nice spicy kick to it. I particularly like eating the meaty and sweet crab claws smothered with the paste.

Absolutely mouth-watering crabs!

Another must-have for us here is the Grilled StingRay (Ikan Pari Bakar) (RM17). The fish has been marinated in curry powder and then grilled and served on a banana leaf. The flesh is very flaky and flavourful.

The fish is best eaten with the sour & spicy sauce provided.

I also love the Fried Squid (RM12) here - the batter is light and crispy and is slightly flavoured with some curry powder.

Excellent accompaniment to beer!

Dip the squid in the Sour & Spicy sauce - heaven!

Some vegetable dishes to balance all the artery clogging cholestrol- rich food we have just consumed.

The Stir Fried Choy Tam (RM7) has a nice crunch to it.

The Stir Fried Sweet Potato Leaves (Shi Miu) (RM7) is good - young and tender shoots simply stir fried with garlic and salt.

The Stir Fried Vermicelli or Glass Noodles (Tong Fan) here is so good that we often order 2 large portions (RM10) - one at the start and another at the end of dinner. This dish is heaped with beansprouts, fish cakes, prawns, squid and pork slices.

Our last order was for a plate of scrumptious Hokkien mee (RM5). The thick yellow noodles are stir fried with prawns, pork slices, squid, choy sum and generous helpings of chee yau char (crispy pork crackling). Doused in dark soy sauce, the noodles were tasty and rich in flavour. Great eaten with the sambal paste.

Opening times: Mon - Fri: 6.00pm - 1.00am; Sat & Sun: 5.30pm - 1.00am
Closed on alternate Tuesdays and Chinese festivals.

Service: Good. The tall thin guy who takes our orders is very good at recommending cooking styles to suit each dish. And he always gets the portions just right.

Price: Reasonable. Our last meal there (9 dishes!) costs us only RM130.
