Mooncake Afternoon Tea at The Ritz-Carlton KL

Mid-Autumn Festival is fast approaching, a time of year whereby we, as a family, would sit around the dining table at home and share a couple of mooncakes over some tea.

To my delight, The Ritz-Carlton Kuala Lumpur is offering a Mooncake Afternoon Tea from now until 4 October 2017. This special afternoon tea set will feature mini mooncakes as well as Oriental bites instead of pastries and sandwiches. Soothing live music plays in the background so you can enjoy a leisurely afternoon at the impressive Lobby Lounge.

Served in the beautiful three-tier set, you will find savouries such as prawn paste toast topped with smoked salmon (our favorite!), chicken sausage tart, crispy spring rolls, black glutinous rice topped with chicken floss and Shanghainese parboiled duck egg with caviar. Five types of mooncakes are served with this set, including snow skin and baked mooncakes with fillings such as shiro umeboshi with green tea, red bean, lotus paste and assorted nuts with chicken.

The set also comes with warm scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam.

Guests will be able to select from a choice of 40 luxury Ronnefeldt Teas, including the exclusive Ritz-Carlton Kuala Lumpur blend. I went for this while Hubby went for the Tarry Lapsang. For the kids, I selected a mild Morgentau Green Tea and fruity Strawberry and Crisps. We unanimously agreed that the Ritz-Carlton Kuala Lumpur blend went best with the mooncakes.

As always, the service here is top notch and the wait staff ensured our tea cups were filled throughout the afternoon. An afternoon well-spent with the family. ;)

Beats and Brunch @ Lafite, Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur

How does spending Sunday sipping on champagne while chit chatting with your friends in an intimate restaurant environment while being served the best French food to the beats of live DJ music sound?

The team at Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur have specially crafted Beats and Brunch, a fine dining all-you-can-eat experience at Lafite for you to enjoy every first Sunday of the month.

As soon as we stepped into the restaurant, we were offered a glass of Veuve Clicquot champagne.. and it was free flow throughout the afternoon. Now, that's what I call GREAT service. Diners can also opt to have red or white wine or cocktails from the Belvedere Spritz collection.

Whet your appetites with the freshly shucked Cadoret oysters from France, and watch as the chefs prepare your eggs with smoked salmon.

Sip some more champagne and the entree will then be served to you. The luxurious entree platter consists of half a lobster thermidor, cold cherry tomato shooter, burrata salad, foie gras terrine and Oscietre Prestige Kaviari caviar. The halved Canadian lobster is stuffed with old-styled mustard and oven baked for about 10 minutes. Meanwhile, the foie gras terrine is encased in halved apples which have been roasted at 150 degrees - the sweetness of the apples pairs well with the foie.

Everything was immaculately prepared and tasted amazing. Can't think of a better way to kickstart a meal ;)

For the mains and dessert, diners can then order from the a la carte menu, as many times as they like. There are six gourmet mains to choose from, namely the Smoked Cohiba Grilled Wagyu Beef, Slow Cooked Lamb Shoulder, Seared Hokkaido Scallops, Pan Seared Atlantic Cabillaud, Eggs Parfait Cooked at 63 degrees and Grilled Octopus.Which would I recommend? Well, if you have the tummy space, I would say ALL, as they're all delicious in their own way.

My favourite though is the scallop dish (I'm biased cos scallop is my favorite seafood), a plump scallop cooked a la minute and served with an artichoke veloute sauce.

When the Smoked Cohiba Grilled Wagyu Beef arrived at our table, the scent of cigar permeated the air as the serving dome was removed. This is served with cauliflower puree, lemon gel and oyster and seaweed emulsion. You can watch how it's smoked in this YouTube video or watch its dramatic entrance here.

For the Lamb Shoulder dish, they use Spanish lamb which is slow cooked for 36 hours and then glazed with juices and spices. This is served with red onions, Parmesan gnocchi, pomegranate gel and lamb jus.

Using cod fish from France, the Pan Seared Atlantic Cabillaud is cooked upon order, and served with white beans ragout, baby squid and veal jus.

Love your eggs? Then you have to try the Eggs Parfait, whereby the eggs are cooked at 63 degrees and then served with asparagus ragout, asparagus veloute sauce and Parmesan foam.

Not to be missed is the wonderfully tender Grilled Octopus. The Japanese octopus is grilled, and served with corn cream, Japanese black garlic puree and Provencal sauce vierge.

For desserts, there is French Rum Baba or Chocolate Surprise from the a la carte menu to choose from. Otherwise, there is also an array of exquisite petite desserts and cheese which you can help yourself to from the buffet spread. Executive Pastry Chef Paul Gardin will also be making some live desserts such as a delightful passion fruit pop during our visit.

Executive Chef Olivier Pistre and his team have definitely put together a great menu showcasing contemporary French cuisine and churning out plates of high-quality, beautifully presented food from the kitchen. A fantastic way to spend your Sundays.

Royal Canton KL's Mooncakes

This year, Royal Canton presents their inaugural mooncake collection, featuring nine varieties of traditional baked Cantonese mooncake as well as nine types of snow skin mooncake.

What's special about these mooncakes?

All mooncakes sold here at Royal Canton are made with no artificial colouring or preservatives.

As they're not too sweet, these mooncakes will suit the palates of those who are more health-conscious. One of the most unique things about them are that the chefs have used pine nuts, which is more expensive and adds an extra creamy dimension to the mooncakes. Pine nuts are also packed in health-promoting antioxidants.

Furthermore, Royal Canton also offers double egg yolk in some of their baked varieties, which is music to my ears as the more yolk, the better it is ;)

For the baked mooncakes, the flavours available are red bean, pandan lotus seed, white lotus seed, and assorted nuts. As they are an establishment serving pork, their Assorted Nuts baked mooncake features Yunnan Ham. BabySumoKids aren't usually fans of the nut ones, but they adored this and declared it delicious after the first bite.

Similarly for the snow skin mooncake, they offer red bean, pandan lotus seed, white lotus seed as well as yam and durian (made using D24 durians). Our favourites were the pandan lotus seed with pine nuts (RM15.80) and white lotus seed with pine nuts (RM16.80) which disappeared in record time after they were sliced.

YUE Mooncake Gift Set by The Westin Kuala Lumpur

We were well-impressed with The Westin Kuala Lumpur's mooncake box last year (we got to grow our own little terrarium garden), and wondered how they were gonna top it this year. Yet again we were wowed - this time with a beautifully designed floral mooncake box which also doubles up as a speaker. Each box is embedded with built-in Bluetooth speakers and is easy to operate - simply enable the Bluetooth connection on the speaker and connect using your smartphone and it's ready to use! BabySumoKids love playing their favorite tunes on the speaker so it's definitely a worthwhile addition to our home.

What about the mooncakes? The Westin KL is offering 7 types of traditional baked mooncakes as well as 1 snow skin mooncake. New this year are the Imperial Black, Five Sen5es Supreme Mixed Nuts and Mini Musang King durian. The Imperial Black gets its name from its charcoal skin and features ingredients such as dried longan and wolfberry - one of our favorites this year.

The Mixed Nuts mooncake gets an upgrade this year, and now features grilled chicken meat, chicken floss and dried scallops, giving it a more savoury finish. This is especially great for those who prefer something less sweet. Otherwise, they also offer a few varieties of low sugar mooncakes with white lotus paste.

This is the first time The Westin KL is offering a snowskin mooncake, with the King of Fruits taking the spotlight. Best eaten cold, this was creamy, rich and aromatic.

New Chef, New Menu at Mandarin Grill KL

The award-winning Mandarin Grill welcomes a new Chef de Cuisine, Sebastian Barcudes. Hailing from Argentina, he brings with him 12-years of culinary experience as well as flavours of South America, which he deftly displays in the new a la carte menu at the restaurant.

Barcudes started his career in a restaurant in Argentina and has worked in various restaurants in Middle East; most notably in Al-Muntaha Restaurant in Burj Al Arab, Dubai under the tutelage of Michelin-star Chef Bjorn Alexander Panek for three years. As Chef de Cuisine of Mandarin Grill, Barcudes' responsibilities include ensuring the highest quality of ingredients are used in his culinary creations while keeping the presentation unique and creative.

To start, we had the Burrata with orange compote, arugula and balsamic reduction (RM78). A beautiful combination of sweet and salty flavours, matching well with the creaminess of the burrata. Simple and good. This is best paired with the Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling (2015), one of my favorite wines of the afternoon - refreshing, with fruity flavours.

Don't forget to try the Path of Roses cocktail (see pink cocktail in background above), made with Opihr Gin and finished with a rose petal.. it was love at first sip for me!

If you had to choose one starter at Mandarin Grill, I would highly recommend the Seared Hokkaido Scallop (RM98) served with pear and ginger chutney and grape gastrique. The scallops were plump and perfectly cooked and were complemented well by the smoked eggplant and subtle, sweet chutney.  To go with this dish, we had the Reserva Terrazas Chardonnay (2015) from Argentina.

Parihuela, a Peruvian seafood bisque with corn (RM56) is a recipe close to Barcudes' heart as it is one of many dishes prepared by his grandmother when he was a child. An extremely flavourful soup, with a fresh, almost-crunchy prawn crowning the soup and corn to give it extra texture and sweetness.

We also loved the Black Angus beef short ribs (RM188), which has been braised with scallion and ginger infused beef jus. The result - full-flavoured, fork tender meat. The dish has also been given a local twist, with the addition of chilli oil and flakes (ala chilli pan mee) to accentuate the taste of the beef. This was paired with the Chateau Ferrande (Rouge) (2013) from Graves in France, medium-bodied red wine which matches beef with an Asian influence perfectly.

Other highlights on the menu include Prawn escabeche with pomegranate seeds, Braised escargot with parsley cream, Smoked eggplant ravioli with tomato fondue and manchego, and Boston lobster Gallega style. You will also find steaks cooked in the Josper charcoal grill, such as the Sher Wagyu Tomahawk Steak (RM928).

Desserts are not to be missed; the Textures of Valrhona (RM42) is every chocolate lover's dream come true. An exquisite dessert which was light, creamy and rich, all in one. To go with this elegant dessert, we had a glass of "liquid gold" aka Carmes de Rieussec (2012) from Sauternes.

Other desserts in background are part of the ongoing Valrhona promotion at Lounge on the Park.
