Aomori Fair @ Senya Japanese Family Izakaya, Solaris Dutamas, KL

From 15-29 February 2016, Senya Japanese Family Izakaya in Solaris Dutamas, KL will be running an Aomori Fair, whereby the restaurant will showcase special dishes made using ingredients from the Aomori prefecture of Japan.

Aomori Prefecture is located on the northernmost on Japan's main island. Northern Japan is much colder than Tokyo and western Japan; the cold weather and a significant temperature difference between daytime and night time enables Aomori to produce a multitude of fruits and vegetables with sweet and juicy taste.

Aomori is the best producer of apples throughout Japan, and besides the world famous Fuji Apple, there are varieties of apples produced in the region. Moreover, seafood of Aomori such as saba (mackerel), scallops and squids are best known for its fabulous quality.

In conjunction with the Aomori Fair, Senya Family Izakaya has collaborated with Aomori Prefecture of Japan will be organizing two contests, one via Facebook and one at the restaurant. The contest is open to ALL (no purchase necessary!).

Facebook Contest:  10 photos of Aomori dishes will be posted on Senya Solaris Facebook page. All you have to do is LIKE the dish which you think will be "most popular" out of the 10. At the end of 2 weeks, 5 randomly picked winners who liked the most popular dish will be chosen and presented with a RM100 Senya voucher each.  Click on this link to vote for ONE photo only.

Restaurant event: At the restaurant, customers will also be asked to vote for the most popular dish out of the 10 dishes, via a ballot box at the restaurant. At the end of the event, 5 randomly picked winners who chose the "most popular dish" will be presented with a RM100 Senya voucher each.

Here are 10 dishes we sampled during the preview event for Aomori Fair and will be in the running for the contests above.

Aomori Apple with Pork Belly Skewer (RM6) - The sweet Aomori apples are first preserved, then wrapped with pork belly and grilled over the charcoal. One of my favorite dishes of the afternoon, the sweet, juicy apples went extremely well with the tender pork belly.  Highly recommended.

Fried Aomori Baby Scallop and Long Bean Sprout (RM25)- Due to its small size, the Aomori baby scallops are much more condensed in flavour, hence it is sweeter in taste with stronger umami flavour. I liked the long bean sprout from Aomori, it is crunchier in texture and contains twice as much vitamin C, E and B compared to the normal bean sprout.

Grilled Aomori Squid with Guts (RM22)- This is a traditional Aomori dish, mainly eaten by the fishermen. Only very fresh squid is used to make this dish because the guts need to be fresh when you make this. It is good with shochu and sake. For this dish, I feel that it is an acquired taste and may not be to everyone's liking.

Aomori Baby Scallop Kakiage Tempura (RM19.80) - Beautifully crisp, this kakiage is a mix of onion, carrot, mitsuba leaves and Aomori baby scallops.

Vinegared Saba Sushi (RM22.80) - The oshizushi is topped with Aomori saba, and the chef has also added his own twist, placing egg, cucumber, sakura denbu and kanpyo to make it look like a futomaki.

Nanbu Aomori Senbei Hot Pot (RM19) - This is a traditional, local hotpot dish from Aomori, especially in the Nanbu area. In Japanese, it is called Senbei Jiru. The soup stock is made up of shoyu (soy sauce) and chicken broth and then topped with Nanbu Senbei, a type of rice cracker. Other ingredients include mushrooms, leeks and shirataki noodles. This would be great on a rainy evening.

Aomori Seafood Barachirashi Don (RM33.80)- without a doubt, the best looking dish of the afternoon. One of my favorites, the bara chirashi featues Aomori squid, Aomori vinegared saba, tuna, Aomori scallop (regular size), ikura as well as boiled Aomori baby scallop.  Compared to Hokkaido scallops, the regular sized Aomori scallops are more milky and rich in taste. The rice is also topped with Aomori yam, which tastes crunchy and cooling.

Pork Don with Preserved Aomori Apple (RM23.80) - The pork don is Senya's signature dish, and for this Aomori fair, they have topped the pork don with preserved Aomori apple. The apples which have been preserved with some lemon is slightly tart, and cuts some of the richness of the pork. Again, pork and apples are a winning combination. Love the smokey flavours of the grilled pork, so delicious! Highly recommended.

Aomori Baby Scallop Miso Curry Milk Ramen (RM22.80) - We were surprised to learn that the children of Aomori created this recipe by accident one day when they put milk and curry into their ramen. It became very popular in the region. The broth is rich and creamy, and is a pretty substantial dish with noodles, bamboo shoots, beansprouts, fish cake, seaweed and Aomori baby scallops.

Cream Cheese Snow Mountain & Aomori Apple Sorbet with Cinnamon Cookie (RM16) - The apple sorbet was light and refreshing, and is paired with cinnamon cookies, cream cheese mousse and an apple crisp.

3 dishes I would pick as my winner for most popular dish: Aomori Apple with Pork Belly Skewer, Aomori Seafood Bara Chirashi Don, and Pork Don with Preserved Aomori Apples.
