Eatomo Food Co, Taman Desa, KL

Last weekend, Hubby and I visited the newly opened Eatomo Food Co, located in Taman Danau Desa. Eatomo is a casual eatery with a menu showcasing fresh seafood and Japanese delicacies. As you enter the restaurant, you will be greeted by a display of seafood, including red snapper, oysters, ayu (sweet fish), as well as packs of sashimi, ikura and chuka wakame. Other than dine in, customers can also purchase the seafood on display. For now, the seafood selection may vary depending on availability (check their Facebook page for updates).

It was a cool morning since it had been raining earlier, so we chose a table next to the windows. Natural sunlight poured in, and we could see greenery when we looked out - quite lovely indeed. I picked out a pack of salmon sashimi from the counter and ordered the rest from their menu. We shared a gyudon (RM16.90) - prime Australian beef slices cooked in a shoyu mirin onion sauce topped on Japanese rice, and served with a sous vide onsen egg and miso soup. The beef was tender and flavorful, we definitely enjoyed this. Other than beef bowls, they also have California-inspired poke bowls, and salmon ikura don.

We also ordered the Nagoya Tebasaki Wings (6 pieces for RM15.90), Eatomo's take on the classic West LA favorite. I love chicken wings, and this gets my seal of approval. Crispy, moist and nicely seasoned, these umami wings were indeed finger licking good. Other than wings, they also do fried oysters (using large Hiroshima oysters) and shrimp.

Truffle infused edamame with salt and pepper (RM5.90)

One of the main reasons for our visit was to satisfy my cravings for sashimi. Happy to report that the salmon sashimi here is very fresh with nice, fatty marbling. We got the large pack for RM34.90 (which contains about 25-30 pieces), however they also do a smaller pack for RM19.90. Oyster fans will be pleased to find fresh live oysters from France going at RM6.90 a piece.

You will also find raindrop cake here for dessert. Slightly on the firm side.

Maria's Steak Café, Bangsar, KL

We love a good steak so we were pleased to discover a restaurant serving delicious, yet reasonably priced steaks in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur. Maria's SteakCafe has been around for over 15 years; its first outlet is located in Ipoh, and now they have two more outlets in Damansara Perdana and Bangsar.

Maria's Steak Cafe recently introduced a new set lunch menu and we were invited to their Bangsar outlet to check it out. For lunch, diners can choose from 4 different sets, all of which include a complimentary soup of the day and ice lemon tea / soft drink. The price of the set lunch differs depending on which main course you choose. The choices include Australian Wagyu 5 steak (RM80/100g), roast lamb (RM35), fish and chips (RM28) and chicken bolognese (RM19). The set lunch is available everyday, from 12pm to 3pm.

As a steak lover, I went for the Australian Wagyu 5. Meanwhile, Hubby ordered from the a la carte menu and had the Australian fillet (RM59). The Wagyu is seasoned and then grilled to perfection. With a marbling score of 5, the steak was delicious, melt-in-the-mouth and tender. I was served 200g of meat, and Wagyu for RM160 is pretty reasonable.

Hubby's fillet was good too; both the steaks had a nice sear and were well-seasoned. They came with a side of sauteed vegetables and potatoes. Maria's Steak Cafe has certainly earned our respect as purveyors of great steaks.

With the set lunch, you will also be served soup of the day. During our visit, it was carrot soup, which was thick, smooth and nicely seasoned.

Hubby's smoked salmon appetizer (RM23)

For desserts, we had the tiramisu (RM15) and carrot walnut cake (RM9.50), along with nice cup of coffee.
