Visiting the Pandas at Zoo Negara Malaysia

When we visited Scotland last year, one of the places we took the kids to was Edinburgh Zoo. Baby C really wanted to see the pandas there. Unfortunately for us, a few days before we were due to visit, the female panda had a phantom pregnancy which meant that she did not make an appearance during our visit. Needless to say, Baby C was really disappointed but I promised her that I would take her to see the pandas when we were back in KL.

Fast forward a few months, we finally paid a visit to Zoo Negara Malaysia to see the pandas. Prior to the pandas arrival, the ticket prices were quite reasonable but post-pandas, we paid RM170 in total (2 adults + 2 children) to see the pandas. Prices have gone up even more after GST, you can check the current rates here.

When we were here the last time, the Giant Panda Conservation Centre was still being built. It is most certainly impressive - our first thoughts were that the pandas sure had a good life - a brand new, super spacious building, well-maintained and clean, air-conditioned as well as air purifiers placed all around the centre.

Yay! Finally we get to see the giant pandas... before you enter the building, you will be told to walk and talk quietly so as not to disturb the pandas (see what I mean about having a good life?). One of the pandas was eating bamboo most of the time we were in there... apparently they spend 20 hours a day eating, and consume up to 9-20kg bamboo daily. The pandas here are called Xing Xing and Liang Liang.

Someone's happy she finally gets to see the pandas... :)

Super adorable.

It was definitely a great experience for the kids (and parents) to see the giant pandas in real life!

It's also good to see that they're upgrading parts of the zoo.... the elephants which use to be neighbours with the giraffes have a new home now.

Giraffes

Tapir

Painted storks, apparently there are 700 of them in this zoo

Savannah Walk - giraffes and zebras roam free

Not to be missed is the Multi Animal show.... on daily (except Fridays) at 11am and 3pm, and on Fridays, showtimes are at 11am and 3.30pm.The macaws put on a race with each other, and we also love the sea lion performances.

Our final stop of the day is the Butterfly Garden.

Spotted a red passion fruit flower.
