Since its opening in February 2013 in Pavilion KL, Ippudo Malaysia has seen a steady stream of customers and I have been told that there is often a long queue to dine in this restaurant. I finally visited Ippudo at the end of March and thankfully, no queues!
IPPUDO was founded in 1985 in Japan’s ramen capital of Hakata by Shigemi Kawahara, the internationally renowned Ramen King. There are 3 broths to choose from - original Tonkotsu (Shiromaru Motoaji), special miso blend (Akamaru Shinaji) and spicy Karaka miso (Spicy Karaka-men). Both Hubby and I went for the original Tonkotsu with flavoured egg (Shiromaru Tamago - RM28) since we were sharing it with the kids.
Shiromaru Motoaji (RM28)
The ultra-thin Hakata style noodles that came with the broth was nicely cooked, al dente, however we ordered extra noodles (Kaedama - RM4) and we found it to be too hard for our liking, even after we left it to soak in the broth for a bit. The noodles are topped with 2 pieces of belly chashu, beansprouts, wood ear fungus, and spring onions. I have to say the broth is really good, rich and comforting. Baby C asked for more broth after she finished her first bowl. The belly cha shu is pretty good as well. We were a little disappointed with the flavoured egg, because it was not a flavoured egg at all but more of a soft boiled egg. At least it was a runny egg.
We also shared a Pork Bun (RM7), which is cut into half for sharing. The portion is quite small but the braised pork is very flavorsome with melting layers of fat and sandwiched between steamed buns.
By the time we finished, there was a long queue outside the restaurant.
After ramen, we went for Baskin Robbins ice cream.... the kids shared a cookies and cream ice cream topped with M&M's ;)

I've heard about the crowd too.
ReplyDeleteMay be I shall pay a visit someday. There are still many Ramens I've not tried yet... =_=
There are quite a few good ones in KL - Santouka, Menya, Marutama.
DeleteWanted to try but each time when I was there, the queue was long. I guess I have to go there earlier...
ReplyDeleteWe arrived around 6pm, no queue.
Deletehow does this fare to the other famous ramens out there? (marutama, menya musashi etcetc)? :)
ReplyDeleteIt depends on what you like. Marutama has the best flavoured egg, Santouka has the best broth (in my books), Menya has great black garlic ramen.
Deleteso each to their own! Will try ippudo soon thanks! so far these few weeks have been eating gokuraku!
DeleteI have not tried any ramen as yet. Geez...I should try and find out if I like it (I am sure I will).
ReplyDeleteHehe! There's many in KL to choose from :)
Deleteyay! any broth that gets Baby C's seal of approval is definitely worth slurping on :D
ReplyDeleteIt's rich but we like it like that!
DeleteWe love the ramen at Ippudo!! And I see you got some of those insanely good buns too :D
ReplyDeleteI heard Ippudo KL's ramen is different from Singapore's.. so maybe it tastes different from the one in Australia too!
DeleteYes, the ramen there is delicious especially the broth, we tried both the Tonkutsu and Akamaru. My son finished it to the last drop! However, the last time we were there, the music and the greetings were rather loud.
ReplyDeleteWe were sat at the outside area so we were quite far from the kitchen. So the shouting didn't really bother me.
DeleteThere are several ramen shops here but haven't tried it yet :P Too cheap to pay at least $68 per bowl , more likely lol
ReplyDeleteHaha ramen is pretty expensive over here too, but if the broth is good, it's worth it!
DeleteIt was the same in SG too. A long long queue!
ReplyDeleteHehe but SG is a bit different... almost all restaurants have a queue!
DeleteI walked by the Osaka outlet of Ippudo the other night at 9.30 pm and there was a queue of about two dozen people outside ...
ReplyDeleteI think almost all the Japanese restaurants in Pavilion has a queue during peak hours. Good biz.
DeleteAlso makes you wonder just how much people will pay for noodle soup :P ... I think Ippudo is now pretty much the priciest of all the ramen joints open in KL, isn't it?
Deletehow can the pork bun be enough for sharing? order moreeee!
ReplyDeleteHaha I didn't know RM7 was for a single bun ma!
Deleteim glad im not the only one with the problem with their noodles. Everywhere i hear people say ippudo pavillion is good, granted broth is excellent but those noodles texture was "meh"
ReplyDeleteI'm really looking forward to another visit though, for their pork bun the least.
ya, the pork bun is so good but I want a bigger cut for that price... lol....
ReplyDeleteHaha~~finally in KL... compare both, which one better?
