A Smile for Every Child: RM100,000 worth of toys to underprivileged and oncology children through Mattel’s Happy Playcation campaign

With the objective of bringing A Smile for Every Child, toy company Mattel popular for signature brands like Hot Wheels, Uno and Barbie will be collaborating with e-commerce platform Shopee to send out toys worth up to RM100,000 as both companies look to address the need to uplift the spirits of underprivileged children during these turbulent times.

Pledging one toy for every order made via selected stores, Mattel and Shopee, as well as NGOs Dignity for Children Foundation and the Childhood Cancer Caring Society of Kuala Lumpur (CARES), are partnering on a special campaign called Happy Playcation taking place from 1 till 3 September 2021.

The participating stores are the Mattel, Barbie, Hot Wheels and Fisher-Price official stores on Shopee. To further encourage Malaysians to support the campaign, Mattel will offer up to 30% off on its toys during the campaign period.

Murat Ariksoy, General Manager of Mattel Continental Asia said, “We acknowledge the adverse impact of the global pandemic on children in terms of learning and simply having a memorable childhood. We are launching this campaign with the common goal of uplifting the next generation. We strive to enable all kids to feel like children again with this partnership, while seeding joy into the community and helping parents with our learning toys.”

This campaign is part of the #ShopeeGivesBack movement, which is aimed at creating awareness and driving donations for various charitable organisations to support their respective causes from healthcare and underprivileged communities to the marginalised, including animals.

Having started in 1998, the Dignity for Children Foundation provides education and care for marginalised and urban poor children in Kuala Lumpur. It currently serves over 1,700 children and youth aged 2-19 years, mainly operating education programmes in Sentul.

Liew Tong Ngan, Dignity's Director of Marketing and Communications said, “We are extremely grateful to be receiving these wonderful toys from Mattel to be distributed out to our children and youths. A very big thank you to Mattel and Shopee for remembering the underserved and allowing the young and old to reach their full potential through play."

Meanwhile, CARES is a non-profit NGO formed by parents whose children have been diagnosed with cancer, medical professionals and caring volunteers. CARES’s mission statement is to improve the quality of life and well-being of children and teens with cancer and at the same, to provide social support for the families and caregivers of the sick child while they undergo treatment for their medical conditions.

Ms. Margaret Low, CARES President said, “We’re honoured to be a part of this movement that will surely leave a positive impact in the lives of those children receiving these toys. Hopefully more meaningful initiatives like Happy Playcationwill be executed down the road to continue inspiring these special individuals of our community.”

Shopee Malaysia Senior Manager (Business Development) Zed Li said, “At a time when members of the community are battling with their own struggles to get through this difficult period, it is all the more important that we lend a helping hand in the best way that we can. The underprivileged children are a group whose needs should not be neglected, especially now, and it is crucial that we help alleviate the pressure they may be facing. The club shares the same aspirations of bringing happiness to a child, even beyond a mother’s own. Recipe: Air Fryer Mamak Fried Chicken (Ayam Goreng Mamak)

Miss dining at the mamak? When I first made this crispy air fried chicken drumsticks, my son remarked that it tasted similar to the ones we used to have at the mamak.  To complete your mamak experience at home, serve the fried chicken with stir fried turmeric cabbage and fried egg. And maybe a cuppa of teh tarik too. YUM!

For the mamak fried chicken, I used Bestari crispy fried chicken coating mix, simply cos I have this at home. You can try this with any other fried chicken mix. Add 1 tablespoonful of curry powder to the wet batter mix for that extra oomph and elevate it from ordinary fried chicken to the desired mamak-style fried chicken. Don't forget to coat the marinated drumsticks with a layer of fried chicken mix again before adding it to the air fryer to cook. Crispy, crunchy, delicious.... good enough to rival your local mamak!

Mamak-style air fried chicken (Ayam goreng mamak)

Recipe by Baby Sumo
Preparation time: 5 minutes

Cooking time: 30 minutes

Serves 4

Ingredients
4 chicken drumsticks, about 450g

For wet batter

3 tbsp Bestari crispy fried chicken coating mix
1 tbsp curry powder

80ml water


For dry coating
4-5 tbsp Bestari crispy fried chicken coating mix

Oil spray

1. In a mixing bowl, add the ingredients for the wet batter and mix well. Coat the drumsticks with the batter and then cover with cling film and place in fridge to marinate for at least 30 minutes.

2. Coat each drumstick with fried chicken coating mix and spritz generously with oil, about 3-4 times each side (*see tip below).

3. Cook in air fryer at 200C for 30 minutes. Serve.

Note: If deep frying, heat oil to 180C, then fry chicken pieces until golden brown or until internal temperature is 165F (74C).

Shopee rolls out company-wide staff vaccination programme to protect employees and shoppers

In a bid to further its commitment in the fight against Covid-19, Shopee announced today that it is participating in the private sector vaccination programme with the aim to have its employees fully vaccinated against the virus.

Shopee revealed that it has prioritised its frontliners from its logistics arm, Shopee Express, as well as teams working in the warehouses as they face the highest risk and have the most potential interaction with shoppers.

 

Commenting on this initiative, Terence Pang, Chief Operating Officer at Shopee said, “Our employees are the backbone of the organisation. Their safety, together with that of our users, is our utmost priority especially as the pandemic continues to affect the lives of Malaysians. We seek to safeguard the health and well-being of our people better against Covid-19 through this exercise, whilst contributing to the nation’s goal of achieving herd immunity.”

 

This measure is also part of Shopee’s reassurance to its users for a better and safer online shopping experience as reliance on e-commerce deepens. Pang shared, “This effort is even more important as we ramp up towards the year-end shopping season, which has always been a highlight for the people and businesses in the country. We want to do our part to help everyone shop with a peace of mind and to help local businesses sell with greater ease and certainty. 9.9 marks the start of the shopping season and I hope that by making buying and selling safer, we can bring smiles to more Malaysians.”

This commitment comes ahead of the e-commerce platform’s flagship 9.9 Super Shopping Day which is the first of its four end-of-year shopping festivals.

The upcoming 9.9 Super Shopping Day, which will take place from 20 August leading up to the peak day on 9 September, also has something in-store for all its users. Last year, together with the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA), Shopee raised about RM1 million in a public donation drive to support the nation’s medical frontliners.

 

On the business community front, Pang stated that the e-commerce platform introduced a RM15 million Shopee Seller Support Package in April 2020 to help traditional businesses who were facing cash flow problems due to the lockdown. “Following which, we introduced a Shopee Marketplace Growth Package providing benefits of up to RM1,600 in store vouchers and advertising credit to help existing Shopee sellers grow on the platform. Both initiatives not only drove digitalisation of local MSMEs but also cushioned the adverse impact of the pandemic on their businesses.”

2021 Mooncakes: Dorsett Grand Subang

With its rich and creamy durian pulp wrapped in ultra-light soft snowskin, the award-winning Musang King Durian Crystal Skin mooncake is a must-have. Also, not to be missed is their famed signature Dorsett Blue Mooncake, with white lotus paste with single yolk wrapped with organic blue pea flower infused crystal skin. 

Other crystal skin mooncake variation available include the Red bean paste and making its debut this year is the Mango Lotus with Custard mooncake, a delightful mooncake with hints of the lovely summer fruit with a pinch of creamy custard saltiness.
