Funtopia Malaysia, SS15 Courtyard, Subang Jaya

After seeing how much our kids enjoyed themselves at Go Ape during our summer holidays in Scotland, we tried looking for a similar activity back here in KL for them to enjoy. I know of Skytrex in Shah Alam, however we shall save that for when the weather is less hot. When Hubby stumbled upon Funtopia on the Internet and told me it's located in an air-conditioned mall, I was sold immediately!

Funtopia is located in SS15 Courtyard Mall on the 1st Floor. The entry fee is RM24 per child on weekday for all attractions for 1 hour.  Once you have registered and paid, your child will be equipped with a safety harness and hats and first taken around the Rope Course.

The children then get the option of choosing which wall to climb or any activity they are interested to try, and the staff will assist in setting them up. So far we've visited Funtopia twice, both times on a weekday. On our first visit, our kids enjoyed themselves more as the person-in-charge was much more helpful; he would guide them and give them encouragement whenever they got stuck on a certain climbing wall. I liked the way he spoke to the kids and gave them confidence to try out new things. I also think that your children need to be a certain height for them to enjoy most of the play area (we noticed Daniel struggling with some of the walls cos his legs were not "long enough" lol).

Here are some photos from our fun day out at Funtopia.

One of their favorites would be the giant slide, very very fun! And they look so adorable and funny in the oversized coveralls.

There is also a Magic Maze (softplay area) for the younger kids to play in - this is also included in the price you choose the All Attractions ticket. When it's not too busy, the staff will let your kids play there as long as they like.

Funtopia is not only suitable for kids, adults can pay to join too if they like. A place I would highly recommend to parents for some fun and adventure for their kids.

Recipe: Savoury Crepes with Cold Cuts and Cheese

We love pancakes, especially when it's topped with whipped cream, plump strawberries and maple syrup.... mm mmm! We've never tried making savoury pancakes at home, however as we have Emmental cheese in our fridge this week (thanks to Bottega Mediterranea), we decided to give it a go!

For savoury pancakes, it is best to make thin pancakes, aka crepes. The crepe is then topped with a rich, cream sauce made by melting butter and whisking in flour, milk and Emmental cheese. Emmental cheese is great for the job as it melts well. You can then top your crepes with ham, or any type of cold cuts - after some experimenting, our favorite toppings are salami Napoli, spicy salami as well as coppa (similar to prosciutto).

This was really good, I enjoyed the savory crepes immensely and am now a convert! Will definitely be making this again.

Recipe by Baby Sumo, adapted from here
Preparation time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 10 minutes
Makes 3

Ingredients
For the pancakes / crepe
55g plain flour
A pinch of salt
1 egg
140ml milk
Oil for frying

For the cheese sauce
25g salted butter
25g plain flour
225ml milk
100g Emmental, grated
Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

For garnish
4 cherry tomatoes, sliced
A small handful fresh basil leaves, thinly sliced
80g good quality smoked ham, or any cold cuts such as salami, coppa or prosciutto

1. Sift the flour and salt into a large bowl. Whisk the egg and milk together in another bowl. Slowly pour the egg-milk mixture into the dry ingredients, and whisk together until the batter is smooth. Set aside.

2. For the cheese sauce:  Melt the butter in a small pan, then whisk in the flour. Cook for one minute, then gradually add the milk, whisking continuously. Bring to the boil and reduce the heat to a simmer for one minute until the sauce is thick and smooth. Stir in half of the cheese and season with black pepper.

3. For the crepes: Heat a 20cm/8in frying pan until very hot. Drizzle a small amount of oil and tip the pan to swirl the oil around. Ladle in about two tablespoons of batter mix and immediately tilt the pan from side to side to get a thin, even layer of batter to cover the base of the pan. Cook for around 30 seconds until the underside is golden then flip or turn with a pallete knife.

4. As soon as the pancake is turned, scatter over some ham or cold cuts, and then top with the cheese sauce. Garnish with basil, cherry tomatoes and more ham / cold cuts and a scattering of grated cheese. Season with more black pepper.

5. Once you’ve topped the crepe, the underside will be done. Slip it out of the pan onto a warmed serving plate. Serve immediately (open-faced or folded in half) or keep warm under some foil while you make the remaining crepes.

Note: You can get your cheese and cold cuts from Bottega Mediterranea. They offer free delivery service for orders above RM100.

Dip n Dip, Bangsar, KL

After our Chinese dinner in Bangsar Village, our friends suggested going to Dip n Dip for dessert. This is the place to go if you LOVE chocolate!

The restaurant / cafe was super busy from the moment we entered until the time we left. Fortunately, we managed to get a table. We ordered a Triple chocolate crepe (RM17) as well as a Chocolate waffle (RM17) to share. The folded crepe is topped with three kinds of Belgian chocolate - white, milk and dark chocolate. For the waffle, it is topped with both white and milk chocolate, and finished with whipped cream. We also opted for an extra scoop of vanilla ice cream for the waffle.  Out of the two, I prefer the waffle for its texture and it goes better with the rich chocolate.

One of the bestsellers here is the Fettuccini Crepe (RM28.50), whereby chocolate sauce is poured tableside (from a great height) all over the crepe. Everyone seems to enjoy the theatrics that comes with it. Maybe I'll try that next time.

Opening times: Monday to Sunday (except Friday): 11:00am - 1:00am; Friday: 2:30pm - 1:00am

Location: Dip n Dip, 5, Jalan Telawi 3, Bangsar Baru, 59100 Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Recipe: Quick & Easy 45-minute Bread (No Yeast) + Charcuterie Board

Last week, we received a delivery of delicious cold cuts and cheeses from Bottega Mediterranea. So, we decided to prepare a charcuterie board for lunch. To go with the meats and cheeses, Hubby also made a quick and easy bread, which required no yeast, no rise time, and no kneading! Just mix and pop in the oven to bake. Imagine that, fresh bread on the table in 45 minutes ;)

An amazing charcuterie board we put together for lunch! :)

Great results - nice and dense bread. Don't forget to serve it with an olive oil-balsamic vinegar dip.

To read more about Bottega Mediterranea and the products that they offer, please check out this post. They offer free delivery for orders above RM100 in the Klang Valley.

We love their cold cuts, this time we tried seven types - spicy salami, coppa, finocchiona, salami Napoli, mortadella, bresaola and honey ham. My favorite is the coppa, which is similar to prosciutto while Hubby loves the spicy salami.  Bottega also stocks lots of cheeses, and they have 3 new cheeses: Gouda, Emmentaler DOP Switzerland, and Emmental Bavarese.

Stay tuned for some of our creations, which I will share here in the coming weeks. :)

We enjoyed it so much at lunch time, we made another charcuterie board in the evening to share with BabySumoKids and my parents. BabySumoKids love the cheeses (Grana Padano in particular) as well as the honey ham and Santal pear juice.

Quick and Easy 45 minute Bread (No Yeast)
Recipe by Baby Sumo, adapted from here
Preparation time: 3-4 minutes
Cooking time: 42 minutes
Serves 6

Ingredients
1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil
3 cups all purpose flour
1 tbsp baking powder
1/2 + 1/4 tsp of salt, preferably Maldon salt
1/2 tsp dried herbs such as basil, rosemary and thyme
1 cup of warm water

1. Preheat oven to 190C / 170C fan. Grease a 20cm square baking tin with oil.

2. Place the flour, baking powder, and 1/2 tsp salt in a large bowl. Turn on the mixer and slowly add the olive oil and water. Mix for about 2 minutes. the dough should form a ball and is barely sticky. If it hasn't come together yet, add additional water a tablespoon at a time. Add the dried herbs.

3. Put the dough into the pan and flatten it until the dough fits to the edges. Flip and press again. Cover tightly with foil and place in the oven.

4. After 20 minutes, remove the foil and sprinkle the top with 1/4 tsp salt and more herbs (if you like). Bake for another 20 minutes. If the top is still pale, switch to grill setting, and place the bread under the hot grill for about 1 1/2 to 2 minutes.

5. Serve the bread with a olive oil-balsamic vinegar dip.

The Tolbooth Restaurant, Stonehaven, Scotland

Stonehaven is one of our favorite places to visit when we're in Scotland. It was a beautiful day, so we took the kids for a stroll on Stonehaven Harbour. We decided to have lunch at Tolbooth Restaurant (a restaurant we visit at least once everytime we're in Scotland).

Our kids love this place!

They offer a 3-course set lunch for £20. We decided to go for 2 set lunches as well a mussel dish from the Specials menu.

First to arrive was the Steamed Shetland mussels with white wine, shallots, garlic and herbs. I went for the starter portion (£7.95) and was pleasantly surprised by the large, generous portion. The mussels were fresh and plump, both mussel lovers (Baby D and I) enjoyed this very much.

From the set lunch menu, I chose the Cullen Skink. The soup was served with chopped chives, croutons and herb oil - delicious and not cloyingly rich. For those interested in trying to make cullen skink at home, you can check out the recipe here.

Hubby had the 'hot smoked' local mackarel fillet for his starters. This was served with baby gem salad, pickled red onions, and orange dressing.

For mains, diners get a choice between Thai prawn curry, grilled fillet of sea bream, and char grilled rib eye. We went for the latter two.

Two pieces of sea bream fillets were grilled, and served with crushed ratte potato, chargrilled courgette and spicy tomato sauce. Simple and good - the skin was crispy and the natural sweetness of the fish can be enjoyed.

Though this is essentially a seafood restaurant, the steak was beautifully done. Tender and juicy, it was cooked to medium rare as requested. The steak was accompanied by hasselback potatoes, glazed carrots, roasted cherry tomatoes and red wine jus.

Dessert was a choice between local Castleton strawberries (with vanilla meringue, chantilly cream and strawberry coulis) or dark chocolate mousse (with honeycomb and salted peanut brittle).
