Tous Les Jours @ WOLO Hotel, Bukit Bintang, KL

NOTE: Tous Les Jours have closed down and is now replaced by Brasserie Fritz.

We have been meaning to try Tous Les Jours, ever since they opened their first branch in Jalan Telawi, Bangsar last year. However, we always get drawn to Les Deux Garcons instead when we are in the vicinity. One day, after lunch at Marutama Ramen, we decided to pay a visit to Tous Les Jours outlet in the newly opened WOLO Hotel.

Tous Les Jours, which means "everyday" in French is a French-Asian bakery. Established in 1997 in South Korea, TLJ has more than 1300 outlets in 8 countries from Korea to China to the USA. It serves a wide selection of breads, pastries, cakes and beverages. The outlet at WOLO also serves hot food.

This outlet has a really lovely ambiance - lots of natural lighting, high ceilings and nice design. Comfortable seating allows customers to sit back, relax and enjoy their food/drinks.The breads and pastries are nicely set out on counters, and it's self service - pick what you want and then pay at the counter. Order your drinks and cakes at the counter and they will bring it to your table.

Wonderful array of pastries

Our initial beverage choices were unavailable, but we finally settled for an organic cold chocolate (RM9) and a cold cafe cappuccino (rm9). I enjoyed the chocolate drink a lot, it was not too sweet and creamy. Yum.

I picked out the strawberry fresh cream cake (RM8.50) and Cream Soboro, also known as Korean streusel (RM3.80).  The cake was delicious, soft sponge cake with layers of cream and strawberry. We also enjoyed the Soboro, soft bread filled with custard and fresh cream.

The only disappointment was the Custard Cream Danish (RM3.90) which was described as "pastry filled with sweet custard cream". When we took our first bite, we expected to bite into cream but there was nothing. We queried this, and was told that the custard is baked into the pastry. Well, that's not how we read it - we suggested that they change their description as it is very misleading. Not good at all.

And here are our noodles from Marutama Ramen (at Fahrenheit 88) which we had for lunch earlier - super delicious! This is definitely ranked as one of my Top 3 Ramen places in KL. :) You can read our review here.

One of the best ajitama (flavored egg) around ;)

Marutama Ramen @Fahrenheit 88, KL

This is my idea of FAST FOOD..

A bowl of hot ramen with great flavoured eggs, we were in and out of Marutama outlet in Fahrenheit 88 in less than 15 minutes. How's that for FAST? Good service, and good noodles. Totally satisfying!

Happy Hour at Al-Amar Express, Kuala Lumpur

Let's Meet Up After Work at...

Al-Amar Express

From 4pm to 8pm daily, Al-Amar Express is offering Happy Hour for cocktails and beers. For every 2 cocktails or beers purchased, you will get 1 free. Wouldn't it be nice to unwind with a cocktail or two after work, for a quick catch up with your friends or simply to people watch (Al-Amar Express is at a great spot right in Bukit Bintang)... (promo valid til end of May 2012). On Fridays and Saturdays, Al-Amar Express is also open til 5am.

There is a good selection of cocktails available - 11 types to be exact. Prices range from RM24 to RM28 each. I tried the Mojito (RM26), Caipiroska (RM24) and Strawberry Daiquiri (RM26) which were all nicely prepared.

Mojito (rum, soda water, brown sugar, mint leaves, lime wedges)

Strawberry margarita (tequila, triple sec, strawberry puree, fresh lime juice)

Caipiroska (vodka, lime wedges, brown sugar)

Strawberry Daiquiri (rum, triple sec, strawberry puree, lime juice) - a pretty ladies drink ;)

Frozen margarita (tequila, triple sec, fresh lime juice) - RM24

If cocktails are not your kind of drink, there is always beer.. with the same great offer.. buy 2 free 1. Choose from Corona (RM25), Heineken (RM22), Guinness Stout (RM25), Almaza (RM20) and Tiger (RM22).

Al-Amar Express also stock 3 types of excellent Lebanese wine from Chateau Musar, by the bottle or glass.

Fancy some shisha?

What's a foodie gathering without some food eh? Love the hommos (RM12.90), tabbouleh (RM16.50) and moutabal (RM12.90) appetizers! Delicious, affordable food!

Moutabal (mashed aubergine mixed with sesame seed paste and lemon juice)

Warak Enab (vine leaves stuffed with rice, tomato and parsley)

Both the haloumi salad (RM20) and grilled chicken salad (RM20) are fab. That's not all, we also sampled the small pastries with different types of filling, shawarma as well as the whole spicy grilled (RM38) and roast chicken (RM38). Though the spicy grilled one didn't look as pretty as the whole roasted chicken, I favoured the grilled one in terms of taste and the meat also stayed very moist and juicy. And I adore the fries here (dipped in the garlic sauce of course!). Manakeesh, the Lebanese version of pizza was highly popular with our table, I enjoyed the spicy chicken with cheese - going for a couple of slices myself ;) Read my previous review here.

Lebanese Food @ Al-Amar Express, Fahrenheit 88, Kuala Lumpur

We've recently been hanging out at Pavilion KL and Fahrenheit 88 quite a lot, since we like the restaurant and shopping options around this area. One evening, we decided to drop by Al-Amar Express to try their offerings -- we've had several good experiences in the past with their sister restaurant, Al-Amar Lebanese Cuisine in Pavilion KL

The restaurant is actually located right outside the entrance of Fahrenheit 88 mall, so dining is sort-of alfresco (there is also a small area which is covered with glass windows and roof). They have blower units around the restaurant, so if you're worried it would be too hot, then find a seat near one. When we were there, there was a soft breeze so it was definitely pleasant. It's also an excellent spot for people watching.

The restaurant is much more casual and is perfect for getting a quick bite. Also, the prices are wallet-friendly :) Flicking through the menu, we see that they have various appetizers, salads, chawarma, burgers, small pastries, manakeech (Lebanese pizzas), chicha and desserts.

We settled for a refreshing ice lemon tea (RM8) each -- we noticed it is a bright red instead of the brown hue we usually get. I wonder what makes it red?

When one does not know whether to go for the beef  or chicken chawarma, what does one do? Go for both of course ;P We opted for the Mix Chawarma Platter (RM26), which is a combination of chicken and beef chawarma served with tarator, garlic sauce and French fries. Though both are flavoursome, my preference lies with the chicken chawarma since it's more moist. Would it be weird to say this -- but the thing I love most from this dish was actually the French fries with garlic sauce dip. The fries was nicely done, not soggy or oily.

Great for sharing!

Hubby is a huge fan of hommos and I have told him the hommos from Al-Amar is very good. No more hommos from supermarkets for us anymore since he agreed it was really good! Plus the hommos here is very reasonably priced (RM12), and it's served with a basket of Lebanese flat bread.

Hommos - mashed chickpeas mixed with sesame seed paste and a dash of lemon juice, topped with olive oil.

Lebanese flat bread

We also got two small pastries, if I remember correctly, this is the beef sambousik and spinach fatayer. There are 6 types of small pastries in total, all priced RM2.50 each. The size is perfect for tasting and eating.

Juicy filling

Ample for sharing

Verdict: I do enjoy the food in both restaurants; Al-Amar Lebanese Cuisine has a more refined atmosphere whereas Al-Amar Express is much more casual and affordable. Would definitely be back!
