Located in Berjaya Times Square shopping mall, BananaBro is one of the latest banana leaf joints to open in KL. As an avid BLR fan, the location is a blessing because parking is a breeze and the ambiance is great - bright, modern and air-conditioned so you can dine in comfort. Best of all, you won't walk out smelling like the food you just ate. Furthermore, the restaurant is spacious with plenty of seating so you can enjoy your meal in peace, without feeling like you need to get out quickly to accommodate other waiting diners.
Diners can browse and order from the menu, with prices clearly indicated (no shock when you ask for the bill at the end!). From 8.30am to 11am daily, diners can start their day with the Nasi Lemak as well as roti bakar and half boiled kampung eggs.
Banana leaf rice is served from 11am onwards until 9.30pm. Each banana leaf rice set is priced at RM12.90 and comes with white or brown (aka Indian) rice, 3 types of vegetables, 4 types of curries, pappadam, rasam and yogurt. Salted chilli is available upon request. All items are refillable :)
For the vegetables, you will usually find the deep fried snake gourd and cucumber salad and another vegetable on a rotational basis. On our visit, we hit the jackpot as they were serving my favorite Indian fried cabbage. For curries, you can choose from chicken and fish curry, dhal or mung bean curry (one of the specialties here). The curries are lovely, thick and nicely spiced. The fresh yogurt is also made in-house, and can be used to tone down spiciness of the meal. The rasam, to aid digestion, is nice and tangy and pappadam is also crispy. We were impressed that the taste is authentic and they got all their basic components right; definitely one of the tastiest banana leaf rice we've had in a while.
Mango lassi (RM6.90) is the perfect accompaniment to our banana leaf rice meal
A banana leaf rice meal is not complete without some side dishes. Mutton and chicken, will be prepared in different styles daily (either masala, peratal or varuval) to offer choices to diners. During our visit, it was mutton masala (RM9.90); the portion was generous with tender, chunks of meat in a delicious gravy. Highly recommended!
Hubby also enjoyed the Chicken 65 (RM7.50), a classic dish consisting of deep fried, marinated boneless chicken. One of the ways to enjoy this is to dip the chicken pieces in the yogurt.
Another favorite here is the crispy Fried Squid Rings (RM9.90) with onion, if the batter was slightly thinner it would be perfect for us!. You can also find Fried Chicken (RM5.90), Gobi 65 (deep fried cauliflower in batter - RM4.50), fried tenggiri (RM8.50) and crispy bilis (RM3.50).
