The BLR Gang gathered again last weekend, this time at Acha Curry House.
Acha Curry House is located at Bukit Gasing, Petaling Jaya; the restaurant which takes up the corner lot does not have any signboard (look out for the building with the green walls), but once you step foot inside you will see a menu board with the words "Acha Curry" on it.
As soon as we were seated, our orders were taken and the food arrived within minutes. It gets busy after 12.15pm, so do come early if you want to avoid the crowd.
Diners can choose to have Indian rice, at no extra cost. Each banana leaf rice is priced at RM6.50 and you will get 4-5 types of vegetables and 4 types of curry, as well as 2 pieces of pappadom and salted chilli. The vegetables and curry are self-service, so you can take as much as you like.
We enjoyed the vegetable selection; there was snake gourd, cucumber acar, pumpkin puree, choy sum and beansprouts which were all tasty. For the curries, you can choose from salted fish, crab, chicken and fish curry or go for them all, like we did! The curries were well spiced and fragrant, and we especially liked the crab curry which was nice and thick.
Here at Acha, it seems that everyone orders the sambal ikan bilis (RM1) to go with their banana leaf rice. The fried ikan bilis was crunchy and the sambal was slightly spicy.
As always, we would order a portion of mutton varural (RM10 for small) to share. The mutton chunks were reasonably tender and well spiced, and the portion size was good. We also had the tenggiri fish (RM9) which was served hot out of the fryer - fresh and meaty with a subtle tangy aftertaste. The fried bittergourd (RM2 for small) is one of the best we've had as it was wonderfully crispy, as it should be.
For drinks, we had the limau suam as well as mango lassi (RM4.50) - nice and refreshing, but this tastes more like mango juice than mango lassi.
Overall, I would rate this as one of the best banana leaf rice we've had this year. The basic components of the banana leaf rice impressed and all the sides such as mutton, fish and bittergourd were well executed.
