Spring Delight @ Tonkatsu by Wa Kitchen, Pavilion KL

It's that time of the year again, when people from all over the world flock to Japan to catch a glimpse of the sakura flowers. Hanami, also known as "flower viewing" is a long standing Japanese tradition of welcoming spring, and appreciating the beauty of sakura (cherry blossom).

Thousands of people gather with friends and family under the flowering trees and celebrate with food, drinks and music, enjoyed in a picnic style. Special seasonal dishes like bento (boxed meal), wagashi (Japanese sweets) and sakura tea are prepared and enjoyed during the occasion. With this in mind, Tonkatsu by Wa Kitchen will be showcasing a Spring Delight promotion from 1 April - 15 May 2016 at their Pavilion KL outlet.

The chefs have specially created a Hanami Box (RM35.80+) , a seasonal creation featuring breaded prawn, asparagus wrapped in pork, onion rings, tori karaage and yaki tamago as well as a cabbage salad, chuka idako as well as steamed rice garnished with sakura denbu, a sweet-salty ground seasoned codfish condiment and ikura. It also comes with a miso soup. Everything was competently prepared - the deep fried items had a nice, crispy batter, however I did find the karaage to be on the salty side.

The rice scene is supposed to look like a flowering sakura tree - the burdock root represents the tree trunk, greens as grass and sakura denbu as the cherry blossom flowers. How pretty!

Sakura Tea, with an unusual salty taste due to the pickled sakura flowers - it is an acquired taste, and the longer you infuse the pickled sakura flower in the tea, the brinier it will be. Top up with more green tea, if required to suit your tastes. It is a drink usually consumed during special occasions in Japan.

For dessert, we had the Full Bloom Set (RM14.80+), one of the Wagashi Sets, which comes with sakura ice cream, sakura mochi and fresh strawberry. The Kansai-style sakura mochi especially was delicious and the sakura ice cream was lovely and creamy. For best value, you can opt for the Sakura Set (RM43.80+) which includes a Hanami box and a Wagashi Set.

Hubby had the curry pork katsu and really enjoyed it. This also comes with a side of pickles and miso soup.
