I have always fancied afternoon teas and during our holiday in London, I had really wanted to go for afternoon tea at The Ritz but we just couldn't find time to do so. Tea at The Ritz, London is said to be the equivalent of Breakfast at Tiffany's; it conjures up the image of elegance, style, luxury, indulgence and relaxation. So popular, that early booking as far in advance as twelve weeks for weekend sittings is essential!
Since we could not make it to The Ritz London, we settled for the next best thing. Hubby being the thoughtful husband that he is, took me to The Ritz Carlton KL for a special treat. Although we had stayed in The Ritz Carlton on many ocassions, this was our first visit to the Lobby Lounge for their Traditional English Afternoon Tea.
We were greeted by opulent furnishings with dark wood panelling as we walked into the Lobby Lounge. The Lobby Lounge is wonderfully refined and discreet, perfect for spending a relaxing afternoon in comfort.
With a selection of over 40 different blends of tea, we were spoilt for choice. The staff were knowledgable and helpful in giving advice on choosing a tea. The tea leaves for each individual type were placed in a glass container to help patrons choose their tea.
Choose from black, green, herbal or fruit teas, with varying properties from relaxing to rejuvenating.
After some deliberation, we finally settled for the Strawberry & Crisp, a fruit tea consisting of ripe strawberries blended with yoghurt crisps.
The loose tea leaves were brewed in this dainty teapot and then strained into the tea cup.
The tea had a lovely perfumed smell, tasted light and sweet, and was the fitting accompaniment to the delicacies served.
The fine bone china teapot, teacups and plates were very pretty indeed.
The afternoon tea spread was served in an elegant 3-tiered stand.
We indulged in an assortment of succulent finger sandwiches, delicate pastries, and scones.
The freshly baked scones were definitely the highlight of the afternoon tea. The scones were warm, light and fluffy with a rich buttery flavour. They were absolutely amazing with lashings of clotted cream and strawberry preserve. So good, we were still craving for more after we finished!
Clotted cream and butter for the scones
Do you know the etiquette of eating a scone? First add the jam, and then add the clotted cream. Remember, scones should be eaten in small bites.
One of the sandwiches served was the Home-cured Atlantic salmon on a poppy seed bagel, topped with roe. Very delicious.
We enjoyed the Double Braised Wagyu Cheek Pie; the pastry was extremely buttery and flaky with a flavoursome filling.
Other sandwiches include the watercress and cream cheese pinwheel, and herb lobster and caviar quiche.
The pastries were excellent; all scrumptious although my favorite was the mango cheesecake.
Melange of berries tartlet topped with edible gold paper, mini sweet mango cheesecake, traditional prune and orange gateaux and raspberry chocolate.
More pastries on display; Champagne, anybody?
Verdict: Afternoon tea is ideal for those seeking a quintessential English experience. We had a truly decadent experience here at The Ritz Carlton KL. The sumptuous and elegant Lobby Lounge provides the perfect, luxurious setting for afternoon tea.
