The Garden Terrace Cafe, Swiss-Garden Genting Highlands

One of the newest hotels to open in Genting Highlands is Swiss-Garden Genting Highlands. We recently stayed here during the Malaysia Day long weekend; it was the perfect escape from the heat and haze engulfing KL.

We had most of our meals at The Garden Terrace Cafe, which is located on the 5th Floor of the hotel. Diners can enjoy their meal, with a view of the natural greenery or the landscaped gardens. Service is great too, as servers are enthusiastic and keen to please.

The a la carte menu features a variety of local and International cuisine and prices are reasonable (for hotel and Genting standards). Signature dishes here include Stir fried prawn with chicken floss, Grandma curry fish, Signature lamb curry, and Rendang chicken wrap with turmeric leaf.

If you're a fan of all things salted egg yolk, give the deep fried Golden eggplant fritter with salted egg (RM15) a try.

The Prawn cocktail (RM18) here is a good rendition of the classic British appetizer, consisting of large shelled cooked prawns in a Marie Rose sauce.

The Char Ho Fun (RM18), which is one of the house specialties was excellent. Loved the wok hei imparted on this noodle dish - it comes with two types of noodles, flat ho fun and meehoon, stir fried in an egg gravy with chicken, prawn and vegetables.

Other noodles dishes that we tried here were very tasty too, namely the Fried mee mamak (RM18) and Thai-style fried tang hoon (RM18). Both comes with large prawns and chilli, for a hint of spiciness.

Honey pepper chicken (RM21) - chunks of deep fried battered chicken glazed with a honey pepper sauce.

Honey glazed chicken (RM21) - a healthier version with grilled chicken, marinated in a sweet and sour sauce, served with a side of garden greens and French fries.

Kampung fried rice (RM18) - wok fried rice served with anchovies, cili padi, kangkung, chicken and fried egg.

Prawn piri-piri (RM21) - wok fried prawn in spicy piri-piri sauce, served with garden greens and buttered rice.

Lemony lamb chop (RM38) - grilled lemon marinated lamb chops served with garden greens and French fries. The lamb was nicely tender and flavorful.

We even got to cook the Signature Lamb Curry at their inaugural Cooking Class. The lamb is braised until tender with potatoes and coconut milk, resulting in a thick curry gravy.

Sago Mango Dew (RM10)

Banana boat (RM15)

Try one of their healthy juices too, such as the Red Root (beetroot, honey, lemon, tofu) or Immunity Booster (beetroot, carrot, celery, broccoli and garlic)

Harry Ramsden Genting: Fish & Chips

One of the things we always look forward to eating whenever we visit Scotland is fish and chips. Since we didn't make it back to Scotland this year, the next best thing was to visit Harry Ramsden in Genting to satisfy our cravings.

Harry Ramsden is a British fish and chips restaurant chain, which has been around for over 90 years. Earlier this year, Genting Group brought the franchise over to Malaysia, so now we can enjoy it when we visit Genting Highlands.

You can choose to either dine in The Laughing Fish by Harry Ramsden (pub-style restaurant) or enjoy a takeaway in the cool al fresco dining area. For the latter, queue, order, pay, get a table and your number will be called out once your order is ready. We only had to wait about 10-15 minutes for ours, and we certainly did not mind it as the fish and chips were cooked-to-order, which makes all the difference to the taste.

For the fish and chips, you can select from three types of fish - cod, haddock or dory. We would recommend that you go for haddock (second choice cod) for an authentic British fish and chips experience.  They go by sizes - regular, large and legendary and is served with double-cooked chips.

We had the cod (RM42 for large) and haddock (RM46 for large) and am glad to report that the fish was good. The batter was nice and crisp, and fish was moist and flaky... thumbs up! Definitely on par with what you can get in the UK. The chips however was a letdown for me; portion size is very small and they were soggy. Overall though, a good fish and chips experience in Malaysia - the weather here in Genting is ideal for enjoying your meal outdoors, just like you would in the UK.

Haddock is our favourite when it comes to fish and chips!
