The restaurant's interior exudes a warm and Zen-like ambiance. There is a main dining area with an open kitchen, two private rooms and five semi-private enclaves to cater to guests. Helmed by Japanese Chef Hiroaki Karasawa, watch the chefs as they cook your teppanyaki or tempura or slice some sashimi in the spacious open kitchen.
Our first stop was the sushi counter, where freshly sliced sashimi, sushi and Japanese appetizers awaits. Other than the usual salmon, tuna and butterfish that you would find in most Japanese buffets, Zipangu also offers tako (octopus) and hamachi (Japanese amberjack). I especially loved the salmon sashimi which was fresh with a buttery texture.
There is a huge variety of nigiri sushi such as anago (conger eel), amaebi (sweet shrimp), sawara (Spanish mackarel) as well as rolled sushi and bara chirashi on offer.
Tuck in to some fresh seafood on ice - there are US oysters, scallops, green lip mussels, tiger prawns, yabbies, Japanese clams and crabs to indulge in. Trust me, these are worth getting your hands dirty for.
Head over to the teppanyaki counter next and pick your meats or seafood from the counter and hand it over to the chef with your table number. They will cook it and deliver it to your table once ready. My favorites were the beef, prawn and scallops. Seconds? - Yes, please!
Do also check out the hot dishes on offer - there are gems such as unagi kabayaki (grilled eel), ika teriyaki (grilled cuttlefish), saba shioyaki (grilled mackarel) as well as the tempura selection (especially the prawn tempura).
End your meal with a host of delicious desserts, such as mochi, cakes, chocolate fountain, fresh fruits, and ice cream. On our visit, there was even miso cake - do try this if you see it - a wonderful mix of sweet and savoury flavours.
I made a video of the buffet spread at Zipangu - you can watch it here
