Lai Po Heen, the award-winning Chinese restaurant in Mandarin Oriental KL is offering an array of auspicious festive menus and dishes to welcome the year of the Water Snake in 2013. We were invited here last week for a special media review and I was very impressed with the CNY offerings here, created by Chef Ricky Thein and his team. The menu here is luxurious, both in terms of taste and presentation.
The CNY menus are available from 3 January to 28 February 2013. Prices for lunch (dim sum) start at RM98 per person and RM188 per person for dinner (minimum 4 persons).
Toss for prosperity and good fortune with one of five yee sangs. We were served the yee sang with sliced abalone and salmon (RM188 for half portion and RM338 for full portion) with an extra topping of soft shell crab. This was refreshing and appetizing, on top of being very luxe.
Toss to a GREAT 2013!
This was followed by an equally sumptous soup, the braised sea treasure soup with American ginseng and Chinese cabbage (RM118 per person). The clear flavorful soup was filled with wonderful treasures such as fish maw, abalone and sea cucumber.
I like the steamed golden pomfret fish served with a spicy brown bean sauce. The fish was fresh and meaty and the slightly spicy sauce went just nicely with the fish. The fish is topped with some finely chopped chillies which has been steamed with the fish to give it an extra kick.
The simmered fortune duck (RM90 for half duck) was a refreshing change from the usual roasted duck. I especially liked the yam sauce which was served with the tender slices of duck, somewhat tricking my mind into believing that I was eating the famous Hakka braised pork dish. We were impressed with the phoenix carving that came with this dish... very pretty.
Simmered fortune duck with mushrooms and iceberg lettuce in yam sauce
The wok fried lobster with sweet basil and a spicy lemongrass sauce was really good. I was one of the lucky ones to get the meaty lobster claw (lots to enjoy;)). This also came with a really nice dragon carving!
The braised money bag filled with sea treasures (RM88) really surprised me... the skin was really nice (not soggy, not too soft) and it was chock full of ingredients of many textures (mushrooms, carrots, sea moss, abalone). The stock it has been braised in was also very flavorful. Love it.
Fried glutinous rice with fresh mushroom and chicken floss
Dessert was a duo of double boiled snow pear with aloe vera, honey date and sun dried longan in osmanthus syrup as well as deep fried glutinous rice cakes with red sweet potato, yam and honey lemon. The double boiled snow pear was very fragrant and a nice warming end to our meal. I also enjoyed the deep fried glutinous rice which is wrapped in a thin filo pastry before being deep fried, giving it a lovely crispy bite.
