Hotel Review: Sheraton Petaling Jaya

Located in Petaling Jaya's central business district is PJ's tallest and newest 5-star hotel, Sheraton Petaling Jaya Hotel. The hotel boasts unobstructed, gorgeous views of the city's skyline, making this the ideal place for a relaxing staycation, be it with your family or loved ones.

Back in December last year, we came here for a staycation with the kids and thoroughly enjoyed the great hospitality and food as well as the well-appointed rooms and Club Lounge.

Upon arrival, we immediately fell in love with the stunning interior of the reception area, with its sleek grey marble floors and the beautiful mint walls with rose gold accents. Check-in was prompt and before long, we were heading to our room on the 28th Floor.

There are a total of 253 contemporary guest rooms and suites, all offering the Sheraton Signature Sleep Experience. We stayed in the Sheraton Club Twin (51 sqm) which comfortably slept our family of four. It's spacious and offered a good view of the KL city skyline. The beds were wonderfully plush, with pillow top mattress for extra soft, luxurious comfort. The rooms also come with a 50" LCD TV as well as a spacious bathroom with separate bathtub and shower with premium Le Grand Bain bath amenities.

Club Room guests have exclusive access to the 300-square metre Sheraton Club Lounge on the 31st Floor. The Sheraton Club Lounge is exquisitely designed, which gives guests a sense of luxury paired with homeliness. Guests can enjoy complimentary cocktail hour with hors d'oeuvres from 6pm to 8pm as well as continental breakfast in the mornings. We loved the exclusivity of the Club Lounge, and the panoramic views are simply amazing, especially during sunset hour.

Breakfast at the Club Lounge - eggs cooked to order, as well as a few types of local Malaysian delights such as mee goreng and congee are available.

Our favorite activity during any staycation is relaxing by the pool. The hotel's pool is located on Level 33, along with their Kid's Club and Fitness Centre. There is an outdoor infinity pool for a refrshing dip or a children's pool for the younger ones. The hotel provides inflatables, perfect for chilling in or for your photo ops with the sprawling city views as your backdrop.

Kids Club

There are six food and beverage outlets in the hotel, promising guests a delectable culinary experience. FEAST is Sheraton's signature all-day dining restaurant, featuring international a la carte options as well as breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets. The breakfast buffet offers an extensive selection, including roti canai, noodles, nasi lemak, pastries and more.

Miyabi is the contemporary Japanese restaurant located within the luxurious Sheraton Petaling Jaya Hotel, serving authentic Japanese cuisine such as teppanyaki, sushi and sashimi. Dressed in natural wood, modern Japanese pottery and origami artworks, the spacious restaurant can seat up to 121 pax, with seatings in the main restaurant, private dining rooms as well as the sushi bar or teppanyaki counter, where you can watch the chefs skillfully prepare your dinner. We had the Omakase menu here, and it was most enjoyable (read our full review here).

Meanwhile, YUE is the hotel's fine Cantonese restaurant serving an innovative menu, fusing classic Chinese dishes with expressive presentations. Diners can select from the a la carte menu or one of the set menus, made up of various chef's specialty dishes (read our full review here).

Adjacent to the reception lobby is The Link Cafe, a cosy, elegant space where you can enjoy a cuppa along with cakes while catching up with your friends or business associates. The hotel also houses a cigar lounge, Chime, offering the finest smokes in a refined space. Come evening, guest can head up to Sala Bar, the al fresco rooftop bar on Level 33 for panoramic views of the city and creative cocktails.

CNY 2019: Rama V Fine Thai Cuisine

Usher the Lunar New Year with a tan-Thai-lising CNY feast at Rama V Fine Thai Cuisine. The restaurant is located on Jalan U-Thant, tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Kuala Lumpur's busy streets in a serene standalone bungalow, with an ornamental pond and private outdoor chalets.

Rama V is well-known for their authentic yet innovative fine Thai cuisine, particularly from the Northern and Central region of Thailand. There will be two Chinese New Year Set Menus available during the festive period, from 15 January until 20 February 2019; the Fortune Set (RM468 for 5-6 pax) and Prosperity Set (RM968 for 8-10 pax). The festive menus feature auspicious ingredients (such as prawns, fish and duck) commonly eaten during CNY, while still showcasing authentic Thai flavours.

Toss to prosperity and good luck with Rama V's Loh Hei Yee Sang, with a delicious Thai twist. Definitely one of the most unique, tastiest ones we've tried this year, topped with scallop sashimi, smoked duck, Thai fish cake, fried red and green yam, pineapple, red rubies, crispy Thai basil,  green papaya, shredded coconut, pomelo and more! It also comes with three types of sauces (sesame, mieng kham and plum sauce) which blend harmoniously together. Loved the slightly spicy, tangy flavours of this yee sang. Priced at RM128 (a la carte) or RM88 if you order one of the festive sets.

We sampled the Prosperity Set during our review, starting with the Golden Shrimp Tom Kha, a mildly spicy, tangy Thai soup with coconut milk, oyster mushroom, lemongrass and a juicy stuffed prawn ball with shrimp roe. So appetizing, great for whetting our appetites.

Four types of main courses will be served simultaneously, along with steamed Thai berry jasmine rice. Prawns are often served during CNY as it symbolises laughter and happiness; here, the tiger prawns are butterflied and stir fried, and served with a lemongrass and lychee salad. Love the pretty presentation of this dish too!

Fish symbolises abundance for the new year; a whole seabass is steamed with Tom Khong sauce; the sauce is very light, allowing the natural sweetness of the fish to shine.

The Deep fried crispy duck with morning glory was a big hit with the kids as they love duck. Served on the side as well was minced chicken cooked with a spicy, roasted tomato chilli paste... absolutely moreish. I loved the deep fried morning glory (kangkung) as well; the tempura-like batter is light and crispy.

I love brussel sprouts, though this is the first time I'm having it in an Asian restaurant. It pairs really well with the delicate scallops, stir fried in a Thai royal sauce.

Desserts are fit for a king, literally; the trio includes Ja Mong Kud, egg yolk dumpling in wheat flour crown which was previously only served to kings and royalties. Other two desserts on the platter are the smooth Jasmine Mango Panna Cotta and Pandan Creme Dumplings (which taste like mochi). What a delightful end to this Thai-rrific meal.

Pinklao (RM24.85) - whisky, lime juice, coconut water, pumpkin spice syrup. Fantastic cocktail, highly recommended!
