Since moving to KL, one of my favorite lunch dishes is pan mee (Hokkien style flat flour noodle). The thought of the poached egg coating each strand of noodles accompanied by the spicy chilli paste/flakes is very appealing to me. We are lucky to have quite a few good pan mee outlets around Cheras.
The first time we made a visit to Jojo Little Kitchen, it was shut as it was the day before CNY. I should have known better. Determined to get a taste of the pan mee here, we revisited after CNY. The restaurant is not very big, hence on weekends you might find that you have to queue for a table during lunch hours. On weekdays however, getting a table here is a breeze.

There is quite a huge variety of pan mee on offer here, but we ordered what we usually have at other pan mee shops, the Dry Lat Jiu Pan Mee (lat jiu meaning chilli) (RM6.30). It met our expectations of a good bowl of pan mee. The noodles were springy, one had a choice of thin or thick noodles. The noodles was topped with flavoursome minced pork, crunchy ikan bilis (anchovies), poached egg, a sourish green chilli paste and their signature spicy chilli flakes.
Mix it well and enjoy!
If you like your pan mee with an extra kick, you can add more of their signature chilli flakes which is provided at every table. There are also two other types of chilli, the sourish green chilli paste and sambal.
On another occasion when I was feeling under the weather, I decided to try their Traditional Soup Pan Mee (RM6.00). A hot soup based noodle is my idea of comfort food. Although their menu dictates that only thin and thick noodle types for this dish, one can also ask for the noodles to be "pinched" ie the traditional way of the dough torn into small pieces. Surprisingly, the broth here did not induce thirst and was flavoursome. I drank it til the last drop. Other inclusions with the noodle are black fungus (mok yee), sweet leaf, minced pork and fried shallots. The ikan bilis is served on the side to retain its crunchiness. If only Malaysia's weather was not so unbearably hot, I would order this more often.
Another must order for us here is the fried wantan (RM5 for 8 pcs). Wonderfully crunchy, it makes a great accompaniment to the noodles.
For drinks, I tried the tau fu fah (Chinese dessert made with very soft beancurd) (RM2.50) and requested brown sugar syrup with it. It was good, not too sweet and definitely smooth. The ice calamansi plum drink (RM3.00) here is also recommended, as the ratio of sourness and sweetness is balanced and hence makes a very appetizing drink.

ReplyDeletethis is rather sad: i've only eaten pan mee with poached egg once in the past two years (at canoodling in bangsar village). there's actually a jojo little kitchen in sri petaling, not far from where i live, but i haven't tried it yet. looks like i'd definitely enjoy it (though i wouldn't put much chili into mine, heheh)

I like this type of chili pan mee!!! The one I had was at Taipan, USJ.
ReplyDeleteUpon arrival in Malaysia I wasn't too keen on noodle dishes, however now 2 1/2 yrs later I am a regular consumer of CKT and a few pan mee types. I prefer dry style compared to wet noodles in general however I do love home made mei fan Kwai the flat torn noodles (excuse my spelling) lol
