Chua Brothers Penang Char Koay Teow @ Lot 10 Hutong, Kuala Lumpur

It's been a while since we visited Lot 10 Hutong for its hawker fare (click here to read post on previous visit). Since we were in the vicinity, we decided to come here for lunch and OMG, it's so packed at this hour! Luckily we were just a few minutes early, so the queue was not too painful.

"I fancy a plate of char koay teow,"  Hubby said.

" I don't think they have char koay teow at Hutong lar," says me.

We stepped through the entrance and there it was.. a new store selling the famous Penang char koay teow. Honestly, have never heard of Chua Brothers, but from past experience, we know that Tan Sri Francis Yeoh would source only the best hawkers for Hutong.

Duck egg char koay teow (RM9.90)

The char koay teow came with either chicken egg (RM8.80) or duck egg (RM9.80). Have always heard people saying that duck egg makes it much richer, so decided to try that. I watched the man fry our noodles with great wok hei.. hurrah! The noodles are served on a banana leaf, it's been said that the fragrance of the banana leaf will transfer to the noodles and makes it all the better.. but I don't know, too hungry to notice LOL.

Get more wok hei in there!

This plate of char koay teow is pretty yummy, I think it's like a standard Penang thing to put two big prawns, some chives, beansprouts and lap cheong (Chinese sausage) and no cockles? Oh and there's plenty of chee yau char too (pork lard) ;)

Other than the char koay teow, we also ordered a plate of char siew wantan noodles (RM7.90) from Ho Weng Kee since we enjoyed it during our last visit. The last time we ate here, the char siew was cut in thick chunks and it was pretty yummy. This time however, it was sliced quite thinly and was quite dry and lean ;(

Char siew on display

Our dissapointing noodles ;(

Wantan was still ok

To cool down from the heat outdoors, we also had a cendol (RM3.90) from Oriental Dessert. Not bad at all - quite a lot of santan and gula melaka.

Would I come back again? Of course the answer is...

  1. I like food served on a banana leaf. I don't know if I can taste the difference but it sure does make it look pretty.

  4. this could make for an intriguing experiment! can try ordering both the chicken & the duck egg char kuey teow, and eat them side by side to figure out if there's a discernible difference. for optimum results, do a 'blind tasting' and don't let the taster know initially which one is duck egg & which is chicken egg :D
