Baba Charlie Nyonya Cake: Traditional Nyonya Kuih in Melaka

For those visiting Melaka, one of the must-try food is the traditional Nyonya kuih. And where better to get them than at the famous Baba Charlie Nyonya Cake, a shop located in Jalan Tengkera Pantai, Melaka. There are signs directing you to the shop, which is actually located within a housing area.

Once you enter the building, you will see an area with local delicacies out on display. There is also an air-conditioned room next door housing all the kuihs such as onde-onde, ang ku kueh, kuih koci, apam balik durian, lepat kacang, apam bekua, kuih kosui, pulut tekan, Nyonya chang and more. Select and place your kuih in the basket provided and proceed to the counter to pay.

We got a packet of the onde-onde (RM5.30 for 10 pieces)- this was our favourite of the lot as the balls were soft and bursting with gula melaka.  The kids usually love ang ku kueh (called Kuih Koo here- RM4.30 for 3 pieces) but some reason they didn't quite like the green bean paste filling here which tasted very savoury. They come in three different colours (green - green tea, black - black sesame and red - food grade colouring).

We also got a few other kuih, such as kuih lapis, kuih koci, kuih seri muka and abu sago, priced at RM1 or RM1.20. All very yummy.
