CNY 2019: Rama V Fine Thai Cuisine

Usher the Lunar New Year with a tan-Thai-lising CNY feast at Rama V Fine Thai Cuisine. The restaurant is located on Jalan U-Thant, tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Kuala Lumpur's busy streets in a serene standalone bungalow, with an ornamental pond and private outdoor chalets.

Rama V is well-known for their authentic yet innovative fine Thai cuisine, particularly from the Northern and Central region of Thailand. There will be two Chinese New Year Set Menus available during the festive period, from 15 January until 20 February 2019; the Fortune Set (RM468 for 5-6 pax) and Prosperity Set (RM968 for 8-10 pax). The festive menus feature auspicious ingredients (such as prawns, fish and duck) commonly eaten during CNY, while still showcasing authentic Thai flavours.

Toss to prosperity and good luck with Rama V's Loh Hei Yee Sang, with a delicious Thai twist. Definitely one of the most unique, tastiest ones we've tried this year, topped with scallop sashimi, smoked duck, Thai fish cake, fried red and green yam, pineapple, red rubies, crispy Thai basil,  green papaya, shredded coconut, pomelo and more! It also comes with three types of sauces (sesame, mieng kham and plum sauce) which blend harmoniously together. Loved the slightly spicy, tangy flavours of this yee sang. Priced at RM128 (a la carte) or RM88 if you order one of the festive sets.

We sampled the Prosperity Set during our review, starting with the Golden Shrimp Tom Kha, a mildly spicy, tangy Thai soup with coconut milk, oyster mushroom, lemongrass and a juicy stuffed prawn ball with shrimp roe. So appetizing, great for whetting our appetites.

Four types of main courses will be served simultaneously, along with steamed Thai berry jasmine rice. Prawns are often served during CNY as it symbolises laughter and happiness; here, the tiger prawns are butterflied and stir fried, and served with a lemongrass and lychee salad. Love the pretty presentation of this dish too!

Fish symbolises abundance for the new year; a whole seabass is steamed with Tom Khong sauce; the sauce is very light, allowing the natural sweetness of the fish to shine.

The Deep fried crispy duck with morning glory was a big hit with the kids as they love duck. Served on the side as well was minced chicken cooked with a spicy, roasted tomato chilli paste... absolutely moreish. I loved the deep fried morning glory (kangkung) as well; the tempura-like batter is light and crispy.

I love brussel sprouts, though this is the first time I'm having it in an Asian restaurant. It pairs really well with the delicate scallops, stir fried in a Thai royal sauce.

Desserts are fit for a king, literally; the trio includes Ja Mong Kud, egg yolk dumpling in wheat flour crown which was previously only served to kings and royalties. Other two desserts on the platter are the smooth Jasmine Mango Panna Cotta and Pandan Creme Dumplings (which taste like mochi). What a delightful end to this Thai-rrific meal.

Pinklao (RM24.85) - whisky, lime juice, coconut water, pumpkin spice syrup. Fantastic cocktail, highly recommended!
