Greyhound Cafe, Midvalley, KL: Modern Thai Cuisine

Did you know that the brand Greyhound first started off in 1980 as fashion retail? Originating from Bangkok, Thailand, Greyhound ventured into the food business in 1997 with Greyhound Cafe, the first fashion cafe in Bangkok to offer modern Thai fusion cuisines in a trendy, casual environment.

In Malaysia, you can find Greyhound Cafe at Ansa Hotel Kuala Lumpur or Midvalley Megamall. Last week, we visited the latter outlet to check out some of the modern Thai dishes they had to offer. Not only were the dishes extremely photogenic, we loved the different flavour profiles of each dish. And how often do you see a dish which looks exactly (if not better) than illustrated in the menu?

To start, we had a few of Greyhound's signature appetizers  - the Greyhound Famous Fried Chicken Wings (RM18), Salmon Sashimi in Spicy Hot Sauce (RM26) and Weeping Tiger with Spicy Pesto (RM38).

I'm a big fan of chicken wings and the wings here get my stamp of approval. Marinated in fish sauce before deep frying, the wings were flavorful and juicy, yet crispy on the outside. We were told that they remove the bones in the wings, leaving only one for easier consumption. No wonder it's so loved... it's finger-licking good!

The Salmon sashimi dish is visually arresting, with its symmetrical plating and vibrant colours. Fresh sashimi-grade salmon slices are topped with raw garlic slivers, dill, mint and a spicy hot pesto sauce made from Thai basil. Love the fresh, spicy and tangy flavours of this dish.

Fresh coconut shake (RM16) is yummy!

The Weeping Tiger features sliced steak topped on sliced cucumbers topped with spicy pesto, raw onion and crispy Thai basil leaves. Pop the whole thing in your mouth for a burst of flavours. The steak was beautifully cooked to medium doneness.

The Complicated Noodle (RM26) is listed under the Noodles section, but this would also work well as an appetizer. Fun to eat, this is Greyhound's version of lettuce wraps where you get to assemble your own wraps using the lettuce leaves, noodle sheet, minced chicken, spicy pesto sauce and coriander. Very tasty and it's great for sharing.

Pad Thai (RM26) is possibly one of the most popular street foods from Thailand and Greyhound has done this traditional dish justice with their delicious version. The pad thai here comes with rice noodles, beansprouts, large, plump prawns, red chilli pepper, crushed peanuts, fresh chives (which you can to tear up into small pieces) and lime (a squeeze of lime to finish). Mix it all together and enjoy!

We loved the fragrance of the Fried tons of crab meat with rice (RM55). The delicate crab meat was generously topped on fried jasmine rice and is served with clear soup and cucumber sticks. An absolutely great dish for those who love crab without the fuss of having to peel crab.

Iced Lemon Tea (Greyhound Style) (RM12)

Do leave room for desserts when dining at Greyhound Cafe.. you will not regret it! Their signature dessert here is the young coconut crepe coconut, unfortunately it wasn't available during our visit so we settled for the Mixed berries crepe cake (RM22). Layers of crepe sheets, mixed berries and luscious whipped cream, this dessert was an absolute dream to savour. Equally rich and sinful is the Banoffee (RM18) which includes Oreo crust, sea salt caramel, banana and vanilla fresh cream served in a jar.

  1. I wonder why they call themselves "greyhound" - like the inter-city buses in the US.
