Family Dinner @ Royal Canton, DC Mall, KL

After our scrumptious dim sum lunch at Royal Canton KL last month, we returned over the weekend to sample their famous roasted meats and other items off their a la carte menu.

We ordered a Peking duck (RM148) and it arrived in its glistening, crispy glory. I was already salivating at the sight of it and the kids were super excited to see the skin carefully removed and then wrapped in an egg pancake along with sweet plum sauce, spring onions and cucumber. It was well worth the wait as we took the first bite... superb, crispy skin, everything a good Peking duck should have.

What a beauty!

BabySumoKids watching intently (and learning).... later on, Baby D made a few duck wraps for us too!

The duck gets sent back to the kitchen, and the duck drumsticks are served for us to enjoy. When you order a Peking duck, the meat will get prepared in your choice of cooking style- duck in lettuce wrap, stir fried with kampot pepper, stir fried with ginger and spring onion, cooked with fried rice or with fried noodles. We went for the latter, and it was delicious! The kids enjoyed the egg noodles which were braised in a thick, flavorful sauce and topped with the duck meat and beansprouts. I would say a whole Peking duck can comfortably feed a family of four.

We also had the Emperor Char Siew (BBQ pork - RM22 for small) and the Siew Yok (Roasted Crispy Pork Belly - RM22 for small) and they were so good! The kids especially loved the char siew, with has a beautiful sticky, caramelised finish. Here, they use meat with higher lean to fat ratio, which is great for our kids, as they dislike fatty meat and I usually have to cut out the fatty parts before they would eat it.

I loved the siew yok which had the most amazing crispy crackling.. you could hear it crack as you sink your teeth into it. This is served with a lovely, tangy chilli dipping sauce.

Royal Canton is currently running a promotion whereby with every spend of RM100 and above, you can order the Murray Perch (approx 500-600g each) at RM10 only. The normal price for the fish is RM12 per 100g, so it is a pretty good deal! This promotion will run until end of July and is available for dinner only.

Our host recommended that we have it deep fried as Murray Perch is quite a fatty fish so this cooking method will bring out the best in the fish. Indeed, we enjoyed it immensely - the fish was fresh with crispy skin and the part closest to the fin was nice and fatty. So yummy! We learnt later on that they use live fish hence diners can enjoy it at its freshest.

Royal Canton is also well-known for its premium dried ingredients such as abalone, fish maw and sea cucumber. For the abalone, they serve either Japanese Amidori or Yoshihama abalone, selected specially for its outstanding quality and wonderful candied centre. For a limited time, diners can enjoy the Whole 50 head dried Japanese Yoshihama abalone, along with Indian Ocean Soon Fung fish maw and Goose web for RM188 per person (min 2 pax). The braised abalone had a great texture, even BabySumoKids loved it! Goose web is a Chinese delicacy, which is said to be high in collagen.. great for smoother, lovelier complexion ;)

For dessert, we made sure we pre-ordered the Piggy Bun with white lotus paste (RM8 each) as the kids really wanted to try it during our last visit. Look at their happy faces :)

We also had the Ma Lai Gao (RM8), soft and fluffy with a delicious custard filling. And a cold, refreshing dessert to wrap up dinner nicely - the Mixed Fruits Lemongrass Pudding (RM10).

Hubby skipped dessert and settled for a premium cold beer.  Royal Canton has a selection of bottled German beer from Weihenstephaner, the world's oldest brewery, located in Bavaria.
