Australian Fruits and Vegetables, Now in Season (April-June)

Our kids love grapes. They're great as a snack and we would happily eat these any time of the day.

Did you know that Australian table grapes are currently in season, until June?

The Australian fruit industry is renowned for its world-class safety standards and innovative traceability systems. Being able to track each batch of fruit after it leaves the farm means that you can ensure quality fruits arrive at your destination. Not only are they fresh, safe and of premium quality, you can really taste the difference when you bite into them - they're crunchy and sweet.. we love them!

Our evening snack.. grapes, strawberries, cheese and chorizo. YUM!

We recently attended the "Making Family Meals Happy Meals" event at Village Grocer in Tropicana Avenue to learn more about family nutrition. There were also fun games and activities for the kids. Baby D and Hubby entered the Treasure Hunt and won a basket of grapes... fab!

Other than the table grapes,  Aussie vegetables such as asparagus, carrots, broccoli, onions and potatoes, are available throughout the year.

We received some really nice green asparagus, so Hubby cooked it along with a nice piece of Wagyu steak for my Mother's Day dinner. To cook the green asparagus, simply trim the woody ends (about 1 inch off the ends), then grill in a pan for about 3-4 minutes (depending on the size) so that they retain their lovely, crunchy texture. He also roasted some Australian baby carrots with some honey and balsamic vinegar in a 200°C oven for about 15 minutes.

I was very excited to find white asparagus in our gift basket too. I've eaten it several times in restaurants in KL and overseas, but have never attempted cooking it at home. Also known as edible ivory or "white gold", it is well-loved for its texture and delicate flavour.

Cooking white asparagus requires a little more work compared to green asparagus - first, you will need to peel the outer layer of the white asparagus using a peeler, trim the ends, and then boil or steam for about 8-10 minutes (again, this depends on the size). You know they're ready when you can put a knife through the stalks. You want it to be tender, yet a little crunchy. We decided to keep it simple - we tossed the cooked asparagus in some white truffle butter and topped it a runny poached egg and Maldon salt. Delicious!
