An Viet, The Gardens Mall, KL

An Viet is one of the latest additions to The Garden's Mall gastronomy scene. The restaurant is helmed by Chef Tuyen from Hanoi, Vietnam and serves authentic Vietnamese street food. The restaurant is really busy at lunchtime, as witnessed during our visit here, however service is pretty efficient.

Sinh To Dua - ice blended coconut (RM10.90) - nice and refreshing

Xa Gung - Hot lemongrass & Ginger Tea (RM7.90) - you can choose to have it with or without sugar syrup.

The menu comes with photos of each dish, which makes it easier for us to choose as the names sounded pretty foreign to us. An Viet, literally translates to "Eat Viet" and was conceived with the aim to get people to eat their food and not waste... hence for main courses, you will be able to customise the noodles and rice portion you would like to prevent wastage.

To start, we had the Gui Cuon (RM8.90), fresh spring roll with prawn. Nice, fresh and light!

Hubby's main course arrived the same time as our appetizers - he wanted to try out the banh mi (RM11.90) here and the homemade pate filling was recommended to us. The filling was pretty tasty, however we felt that the baguette could do a little more tweaking for this to be perfect.

If pate is not your thing, you can try the grilled pork chop or grilled lemongrass chicken filling

When the Banh It Ram (RM9.90) arrived at our table, we thought it was significantly bigger than illustrated in the menu (which is never a bad thing).  The top is a mochi dumpling filled with pork , mung bean and prawn while the bottom which has been deep fried to crispy perfection.  This gives it a nice contrasting texture.

One of our favorite dishes here was this Canh Chua Ngao Nuoc Dua (RM13.90) - clam in coconut broth - the clams were fresh and sufficiently meaty, and went well with the tangy, slightly spicy broth. Would definitely order this again.

When we think of Vietnamese food, pho is one the food that instantly comes to mind. Sadly, the pho bo (RM18.90) here fell short of expectations. The rice noodles is served with two types of beef - tenderloin and brisket.

The bun cha (RM17.90) on the other hand was delicious. We were told that we should eat this Northern Vietnamese specialty as we would a cold soba- firstly tear up the herbs and green coral lettuce lettuce into the dipping sauce, then dip the noodles in and eat it together with the grilled pork patties and pork belly. A lovely, appetizing dish.

Hubby's Viet-Ffogato (RM9.90) - Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk ice cream which Hubby enjoyed

Lime and Lemongrass Sorbet (RM7.90) - a refreshing palate cleanser

An Viet is located on Lower Ground Floor of The Gardens Mall (next to Village Roast Duck)

Overall, a nice casual restaurant for Vietnamese food - there are already a few dishes which we can't wait to return and eat! ;)

Opening times: 11.30am to 10.00pm daily.

Location: An Viet, Lot LG-203B (Lower Ground Floor), The Gardens Mall, Mid Valley City, Lingkaran Syed Putra, 59200 Kuala Lumpur.

  2. What a shame about the pho because the other things looked great! Sometimes pho can be really hard to get right.

  3. Everything looks so delicious! It's a shame the pho fell short. I agree with Lorraine, it can be tough to get that one right.
