AQUA Restaurant & Bar, Mandarin Oriental KL

AQUA Restaurant & Bar is the latest addition to Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur's range of exciting gastronomic choices. This new al fresco dining space replaces Cascade Restaurant, and now boasts a stylish, contemporary design with a polished copper finish. With hanging copper lights, bespoke tiles for the open kitchen counter, an island bar, a dessert counter and a specially designed wood-fired pizza oven, be enthralled by the interactive dining experience as chefs prepare your orders right before your eyes. Aqua also offers a fantastic view, overlooking the hotel pool area, KLCC Park and the city's skyline.

The menu features a fine mix of appetizers, salads, global tapas, pastas, noodles, pizzas, burgers to dessert, which are great for sharing. They also offer an array of interesting cocktails, lemonades, iced teas and mocktails.

The Millionaire Mojito (RM68), one of AQUA's signature cocktails, is highly recommended - a mixture of Ron Zacapa Centenario Solera 23, lime, mint and sugar. Moet & Chandon champagne which is added tableside to complete the concoction. We also tried the Strawberry & Thyme lemonade (RM24) - wonderfully refreshing, perfect for the hot weather!

We started off with the AQUA Roll (RM88), an inside-out roll topped with spicy tuna, and rolled in finely chopped scallion. In the centre are crunchy salmon and tempura bits.

Next up is the Norwegian Salmon Tataki (RM58) - the salmon has been lightly seared, so the centre was still raw and moist. This was served with sliced avocado, white tomato dressing and creamy guacamole. So delicious, this was one of my favorite dishes of the afternoon :)

The Pan-fried Shanghai Dumplings (RM46), consisting of minced chicken and prawns, were nice and juicy, and was served with a slightly spicy ginger-cucumber-teriyaki relish. The Gambas al Ajillo (RM98) is a classic Spanish tapas dish, done very well here. Fresh, taut tiger prawns are sauteed in olive oil and garlic and served with several pieces of toasted ciabatta for dipping. The Thai Chicken Lettuce Wraps (RM45) is both spicy and savoury - the minced chicken with spicy lime dressing is held in a lettuce, easy to pick up with your fingers and eat. Nice and light, great for al fresco dining.

Another great dish here is the French onion soup (RM38), which is topped with baguette and 3 cheeses, and then oven baked. The soup is really tasty and one of the best versions we've had in KL, however I would have enjoyed this even more if eaten on a cool, rainy evening.

There are five types of pizzas to choose here, from pizza Margherita, Quatro Formaggio, Hawaii, al Salmone or Chorizo. All the pizzas here are thin based and cooked in the wood-fire oven, which gives it a lovely smoke-infused taste.  Pictured here is the Pizza Chorizo (RM62) which is topped with spicy beef chorizo, buffalo mozzarella, garlic, organic tomatoes, olives and extra virgin olive oil.

Dessert selections are pretty good too, we settled for the Baked Lemon Meringue Pie (RM28) and Warm Valrhona Chocolate Lava Cake (RM34) with vanilla ice cream. The lemon meringue pie is light, tart and refreshing, with a nice crumbly shortcrust pastry. I love the feeling of cutting into a lava cake at the end of the meal and watching the chocolate sauce flow out of the cake. The lava cake is very rich, so it is recommended to share this with a friend.
